GIRASOLE CUCINA ITALIANA… “Neighborhood Charm & Intriguing Cuisine!”

My husband and I had the immeasurable pleasure of visiting Girasole Cucina for a romantic dinner one chilly evening. The name refers to ‘a gem that reflects light in a bright luminous glow’. We feel the name suits this family run operation, as the restaurant does in fact reflect a shimmer of love and happiness down Larchmont Boulevard for all to appreciate through authentic Italian cooking, generosity and kindness shown to dining patrons, and the comforting and welcoming feeling one acquires when dining here.

Girasole is operated by an Italian family, and has been in full swing since 1993. There’s a good reason this alluring treasure has been in existence for so many years. And still, today it is as popular as ever without seemingly appearing overcrowded. Reservations are strongly recommended, if not required for a table at Girasole. The modest dining room fills up fairly quickly, as we witnessed due to the palatable cuisine that is proposed.

My husband and I love dining along the sidewalk tables of Larchmont Village. This particular evening, the sun had already set, and the fast approaching darkness arrived almost without notice. We sat at a candlelit bistro table draped in white linens with a view of Larchmont Boulevard, the well-paced activity view through the windows of the restaurant, and twinkling stars overhead welcoming the evening solace.

Girasole does not sell alcohol, therefore they are happy to not charge a corkage fee for bottles of wine their customers bring in to enjoy. A friendly server receives your chosen vintage, then decants it in a sunflower-yellow ceramic vessel, which they place on your table along with two garnet-colored drinking glasses. Water was served, and we were left alone for a few minutes to peruse the evening’s menu filled with delectable temptations perfect for a chilly evening such as this was.

Bread service was well-received and presented with extra virgin olive oil. Tender and hearty, this sourdough version of bake goodness was just perfect for tasting with the bottle of red we arrive with.

Insalata di Arugola

We chose the Insalatta di Arugola ($10) which was comprised of tender baby arugula, shaved Parmigiano cheese, earthy pine nuts, and lemon and extra virgin olive oil. This was an ample portion for enjoying with a second person. My husband and I split this salad, and we were surprised how long it lasted. There’s something about a simple lemon juice and olive oil dressing that leaves a pleasant happiness on the taste buds. The nuttiness of the pine nuts mixed nicely with the perfect dressing and zesty Parmigiano shavings also.

Farfalle con Salmone Addunicato

My husband chose the Farfalle con Salmone Adunicato. This dish encompassed all the goodness of fresh mild-tasting cooked salmon and hearty house made pasta in a memorable cream sauce that wasn’t so heavy you couldn’t enjoy the dish. We switched the original bow tie pasta this entree normally is served with for a lovely tagliatelle pasta that really made the experience of consuming this meal worthwhile. A bit of freshly grated Parmesan on top of it all, and you’ve got a warm flavor-filled bowl of happiness just waiting to be devoured.

Pollo con Limone

The Pollo con Limone ($18) was my selection of the evening. Mouthwatering hand-breaded chicken breast cutlets with a savory lemon and caper sauce accompanied by a side of creamy whipped potatoes and sauteed spinach. Such a beautiful presentation. The chicken was moist and perfectly prepared with a very light breading, while the lemon and capers added a pleasant zing to the entire entree.

IMG_6832

Penne con Melanzane

This was another flavorsome treat at Girasole…the Penne con Melanzane ($15). Expertly prepared penne pasta tossed in savory fresh tomatoes and olive oil, then topped with Mozzarella and grilled eggplant. Simple ingredients, a burst of flavor when tasted, an aroma to pacify most anyone, and a beautiful presentation on top of it all.

IMG_8253

Pasticcio con Ragu e Porcini

I have declared this my favorite lasagna dish ever this side of Italy. The Pasticcio con Ragu e Porcini ($16). This vegetable lasagna contains layer upon layer of tomatoey sensations, earthy Porcini mushrooms, and a mouthwatering ragu. One bite of this sensational creation, and you’ll understand why I love it so much. Below, you can see the interior of this delectable dish after I sliced it in two on my plate. Full of color, full of flavor, and full of heartiness without being too heavy.

IMG_6837

Pasticco con Ragu e Porcini

We were extremely happy with our experience at Girasole. We would recommend it to anyone seeking a fine authentic Italian meal in a romantic environment with efficient service in addition. Locating a meal as good as this Hancock Park neighborhood gathering spot is somewhat difficult for the reasonable pricing, free corkage, attentive service, and elegantly appointed cozy ambiance. If you haven’t been to Girasole, you should give it a try. It possesses as much charm and elegance as the Larchmont Village area does, and it will leave you envisioning your next visit before you know it.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Girasole is a small charming Italian restaurant with limited seating indoors that will require a reservation to ensure a table due to space and popularity. Indoors, you will gain a feeling of warmth and casual elegance from the soft tones and white tablecloths carefully draped atop tables enhanced by candlelight. Outside seating is limited along the sidewalk in front of the business with heaters for cooler evenings and a view of Larchmont Boulevard.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Tasteful and bursting with flavors of love that were put into each dish in the kitchen, elegantly presented, and just all around fantastic.
  • LOCATION: Girasole Cucina Italiana is located in Larchmont Village at 225 1/2 Larchmont Boulevard in Los Angeles (Mid Wilshire), CA 90004.
  • HOURS: Girasole is available for dining Tuesday through Friday from 12 PM to 10 PM, and on Saturday and Sunday from 5:30 PM to 10 PM. It’s a good idea to make a reservation due to the limited seating. But take our word for it that you will be so happy to experience this paragon of the community.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Our server was Sophia, and she was as friendly and efficient as could be. She also made a point to check on us frequently despite the inside of the small eatery being completely full. Just delightful service that will most certainly bring us back again.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Excellent pricing for excellent Italian cuisine.
  • CORKAGE FEE: The restaurant does not have a liquor license, so they welcome you to bring your own wine with NO CORKAGE FEE! Bring something from your personal cellar, or stop in next door at Larchmont Village Wine, Spirits & Cheese for a nice selection there as well.
  • PARKING: There is ample metered parking along Larchmont Boulevard, which runs in front of Girasole restaurant.
  • TOTAL BILL: For the two of us, our bill came to $47.85 (including tax) for the Insalata di Arugola, the Pollo con Limone e Capperi, the Farfalle con Salmone Affumicato, and no corkage charge on the bottle of wine we brought to enjoy with dinner. It’s difficult to find an authentic Italian dinner in a romantic atmosphere for under $50 with wine. Girasole has certainly won our appreciation between the savory Italian cuisine, the unparalleled service that was rendered, and the perfect location in the quaint, cozy neighborhood of Hancock Park.

RUTH’S CHRIS STEAKHOUSE… “A Woodland Hills Experience!”

After comparing the “Happy Hour” accommodations of the Woodland Hills Ruth’s Chris to the location in Beverly Hills, we’ve decided to recommend the Woodland Hills location to our readers for a great Happy Hour. Spacious, comfortable booths, tables and high-tops with a much longer-lasting and extensive menu, you won’t be disappointed with this Woodland Hills gathering spot!

Called their “Prime Hour”, the Woodland Hills Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse offers everything you can think of in terms of appetizers. We were shocked by the portion sizes, and awed by the incredible service and quality of the hand-shaken cocktails we enjoyed each time we visited.

Select wines, premium beers and well drinks are just $5, while hand shaken refreshing martinis are available for $7 each during Prime Hour. Above, we delighted in a Cosmopolitan, a Rum & Coke, a couple of glasses of wine, a basket of complimentary spicy potato chips and a classic Lemon Drop Martini.

Prime Hour Caesar Salad

The Ruth’s Chris Prime Hour Caesar Salad is a filling portion for anyone. Crisp Romaine lettuce leaves with Romano cheese and a creamy Caesar dressing topped with shaved Parmesan on top. When asked if I would like anchovies with my salad, we were not only not charged extra for them, but they were presented to us on a separate plate on a bed of lettuce! And at only $5, it was quite a deal.

Anchovies Served Atop a Lettuce Leaf For Caesar Salads

For $9, you can relish in the jumbo-sized chilled Shrimp Cocktail. Served on a bed of lettuce and Ruth’s Chris delicious New Orleans-style spicy cocktail sauce, this item is refreshing to enjoy and visually, a sight to behold.

Shrimp Cocktail

The next Prime Hour selection we recommend is the Crabtini Appetizer. Tender plump lump crab meat served in a chilled martini glass accompanied by lettuce leaves, a bell pepper garnish, the restaurant’s house vinaigrette and a delectable classic Remoulade sauce and hunks of white sweet crab meat just waiting to be devoured. This dish is $9 also, and comes with a stunning and colorful presentation, as you can see below.

Crabtini

Now we get to what Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse is known for. Their beef! Below, these Prime Sliders are a mere $7…with cheese! Soft mini hamburger buns show off what’s inside as melty cheddar cheese blends in nicely with these perfectly-prepared savory bites!

Prime Burger Sliders

Yum! Did somebody ask for Crab Stuffed Mushrooms? Because we tried those, too! These large broiled mushroom caps are stuffed with a lump crab meat stuffing, sprinkled with Romano cheese then baked to perfection! Enjoy these for a simple $7!

Crab Stuffed Mushrooms

Next, we ordered the Ruth’s Tenderloin Rolls, which are Ruth’s Chris tender mini steaks on soft melt-in-your-mouth buns in servings of three per order. Wow. That’s all we can say about these. Wow. Wow. Wow. And for only $9.

INSIDER’S TIP: Our tip for ordering these sumptuous bites of beef is to ask for some of the restaurant’s whipped cream horseradish sauce. Not that these delicious morsels of flavor need it, but we just enjoy adding a touch of this heavenly sauce to these Tenderloin Rolls. Give it a try. You’ll see what we mean!

Tenderloin Rolls

On to our next taste sensation! The Veal Osso Bucco Ravioli below. Large saffron-infused ravioli casings filled with Veal Osso Bucco and fresh Mozzarella cheese then served with baby spinach and a white wine demi-glace. Can you say CRAZY DELICIOUS! All for just $7!

Veal Osso Bucco Ravioli

Care for a little Big Easy in your Prime Hour? Then try your luck with the Ruth’s Chris outstanding $7 Barbequed Shrimp! These New Orleans-style sauteed shrimp are swimming in a reduction of white wine, butter, garlic and spices. However, this appetizer is not spicy. My husband really enjoyed this dish and had no problems with the spiciness whatsoever. There’s more of a hint of spice, but not hot enough to cause an issue.

Barbequed Shrimp

We could literally go on for days blogging about the Woodland Hills Ruth’s Chris Prime Hour. We were THAT impressed. But all good things must come to an end eventually. BUT FIRST…

Behold! The Ruth’s Chris Prime Burger & Fries Appetizer…

The Ruth’s Chris Prime Burger With Fries

Yes, this is an actual appetizer on the Prime Hour menu! It’s a massive burger made with only the best beef around and lands on our list of top five all-time favorite burgers! Served open-faced, this burger was cooked to our requested temperature, placed on a large hamburger bun, topped with a mountain of blue cheese, then plated with all the traditional accoutrements on the side. Once assembled, you can see in the photos above that it’s a colossol burger! At a mere $9, what could be better?

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: The Ruth’s Chris spacious lounge can be described as Asian-modern with a trendy edge to it. We’ve found this establishment’s lounge to be quite accommodating for their Happy Hour activities.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Terrific steaks, incredible burgers, fun sliders, refreshing salads, outstanding beverages….okay, everything here is amazing!
  • LOCATION: The Woodland Hills Ruth’s Chris is located at the Westfield Towne Promenade Mall at 6100 Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Woodland Hills, CA in Suite 1360.
  • HOURS: Prime Hour is available Tuesday through Friday from 5PM to 7PM. However, on Fridays, you can start enjoying what is offered at 4:30 PM! But get there early on a Friday, because this space gets filled up quickly if you’re not in the know. Sundays and Mondays, Prime Hour selections are offered all night from 5PM until closing.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Exceptional service every time we have visited this restaurant. Unparallelled customer service!
  • PRICE / VALUE: Amazing, amazing, amazing! Just go and you’ll see why we are so excited about the value of the Prime Hour menu!
  • CORKAGE FEE: In the lounge or main dining room, if you bring in a bottle to cork, there is a $15 corkage charge. Now we have to tell you this…if you bring in a bottle to have with dinner, then order even a half-bottle off the Ruth’s Chris menu, the restaurant will waive your $15 corkage charge! How’s that for a deal! And customer loyalty!
  • CONTACT INFO:Phone: (818) 227-9505. Website:www.ruthschris.com
  • PARKING: Valet parking is available, however there is ample parking in front of the restaurant in the parking lot and just a few short steps from the lot to the front door of this eatery.
  • TOTAL BILL: We’ve experienced this Prime Hour on a few ocassions, never having a bill that exceeded $40 (including tax). Of course, depending on how many items you order, the final bill will reflect those selections. We’re very happy with this Ruth’s Chris and will continue to return again and again.

SWEET BUTTER KITCHEN, CAFE & MARKETPLACE… “How Sweet It Is To Lunch At Sweet Butter!”

A couple of times a month, I meet some of my girlfriends that live in the Sherman Oaks area for a long lunch to catch up on the goings on in our busy lives. Over the last several months, our latest spot for lunching has been Sweet Butter Kitchen on the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Matilija Avenue. Since we have been regular patrons, I cannot imaging there NOT being a Sweet Butter. In fact, I really don’t quite know how I got along without it’s existence before we started going there.

Leslie Danelian and husband Rick Berge have really outdone themselves since opening Sweet Butter in November of 2010. If you’re either from the area originally, or if you’ve lived here for a number of years, you’ll probably remember Leslie’s Sweet Somethings Catering Company in Sherman Oaks. If you don’t, or haven’t lived here long enough to remember it, don’t worry, because Leslie has taken her twenty years of culinary and planning experience and created Sweet Butter! (Thank you, Leslie!) Having become the hot spot to lunch with friends, enjoy Brunch and Breakfast, or a bottle of wine from home with a 6 PM early dinner, Sweet Butter is THE place to relax, enjoy and just indulge in what Leslie and her staff have to offer.

Designed by talented creative artist, Carrie Vose, the eatery offers seating outside along the front of it’s light-yellow-with-chocolate-brown-accents exterior on Ventura Boulevard and continues around the corner along the side of the building on Matilija Avenue. Complete with heaters for chilly evenings and built-in misters for warmer days, I don’t think the owners of Sweet Butter could have put more thought into the comfort of their customers. With sizable bistro tables surrounding the restaurant’s perimeter and a cozy courtyard for additional dining, Sweet Butter offers even more surprises when you walk into their market to place your order.

As you enter the main entrance through a beautifully crafted wrought iron gate with the letters “SB” conveniently positioned on them, you feel as thought you are entering a quaint indoor garden. There are fresh herbs growing from unique hanging baskets, encouraging statement signs everywhere you look, little notes written on small chalkboards with inspiring messages, an enormous chandelier hanging from the rafters over the interior courtyard made of fastened branches with tiny white lights, and all of the walls… exterior and interior…are a calming light yellow hue…the same color of sweet butter.

There’s so much fun inside the Sweet Butter market! The photos below show the menu inside the Sweet Butter market handwritten in chalk and posted on one wall, their hand-selected artisan items, themed pastas, books, candies, Sweet Butter logo tote bags, bottled soda, and other little tidbits will make you smile along the way, or make someone else’s day when you present them with a Sweet Butter gift carefully wrapped by the staff!

Above, the massive framed chalk-written menu board hangs on a wall inviting customers to ponder what they are in the mood for, while individual laminated menus are also available in the courtyard foyer as well as in a holder on the wall beside the chalk menu. Selections include such delectables like sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, pastries, muffins, incredible savory breads, and so much more. Most items are served all day, then some only until 10:30 AM. Only the freshest ingredients are used when preparing meals for customers at Sweet Butter, so sometimes, some of the standard fare won’t be available every day. But most of the time, it is. Sweet Butter’s Breakfast menu offers such delicious selections as omleles, scrambles, breakfast burritos, and parfaits. Starting at 11 AM, the eatery serves lunch, which includes such fare as their crispy fried chicken, sliders, grilled chicken, and afternoon snacks for kids (and adults, too!) There are even boxed lunches available for twelve dollars! Take-out orders are convenient, and the team at Sweet Butter is available for catering jobs as well (that’s not a surprise with Leslie at the helm!) And there’s a Weekday Menu as well as a Weekend Menu. Oh no…no more Meatloaf Sandwiches??? Hopefully they’ll return again soon. Until then, you can satisfy your cravings with any of the below items I’ve personally experienced, or any of the other delicious items on the Sweet Butter menu…

Grilled Turkey and Fig Jam Sandwich

The Grilled Turkey and Fig Jam sandwich, above, was dressed with St. Agur Bleu Cheese and Mozzarella on Rustic Country Bread served with an Arugula Salad on the side.

Sweet Butter Kale Chopped Salad

The Sweet Butter Kale Chopped Salad comes with Sopresatta Salami or Roasted Chicken, Provolone, Garbanzos, Roasted Red Peppers, Celery, Red Onion and pepperoncini over Kale with their Italian vinaigrette. I chose to get half salami and half roasted chicken on this delectable and beautiful salad!

Half-A-Sandwich & a Cup of the ‘Soup of the Day’

Above, the Half-A-Sandwich with a Cup of the Soup of the Day was filling and healthy. My friend chose a half of the Sweet Butter BLT and a cup of the Kale & White Bean Soup…

I always get Sweet Butter’s iced tea when I visit. Refills are complimentary, and the tea is refreshing, cold and wonderful on a warm afternoon.

Sweet Butter Iced Tea

Don’t forget Sweet Butter also offers a solution to your sweet tooth as well. Have your pick from their amazing array of options like their scones, cookies, layer cakes, candies and other delectables! And if you love Afternoon Tea, Sweet Butter offers Afternoon Tea Time between 2 PM and 6 PM by reservation.

The attention to detail at Sweet Butter is obvious. Below, simple napkins and dining utensils are held by steel cut oatmeal cans (I always thought those were such beautiful tins myself), and instead of just giving patrons a “number” to put on their table for servers to locate them when their food is sent from the kitchen, Sweet Butter hands customers a spice, or an herb, or a vegetable. They’ve just thought of everything here down to the very last detail!

If you haven’t yet been to Sweet Butter and experienced the level of unmatched customer service, friendly neighborhood vibe and incredible edible offerings, it’s definitely time to do so. You’ll be happy that you did. And maybe you’ll leave with a little something special for yourself or for someone else from the Sweet Butter market!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Professionally designed by artistic consultant, Carrie Vose, Sweet Butter has the essence of the perfect neighborhood bakery, eatery and marketplace. Calming yellows, rich chocolate brown highlights and intricate wrought iron and other details enhance the already near-perfect establishment. Charming and fun, you won’t be disappointed with what you find here.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Simply exceptional! Our group hasn’t has a meal we haven’t liked since our first time at this establishment. We don’t know how they do it! Wonderful refreshing iced tea with complimentary refills in addition! Give the staff at Sweet Butter a call to learn about their daily specials!
  • LOCATION: Sweet Butter is located at 13824 Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, CA 91423.
  • HOURS: Sweet Butter is open 8 AM to 7 PM seven days a week (summer hours), unless otherwise stated. Be sure to give them a call before you stop by in the event of early closings for special events or private parties.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Friendly, genuinely happy, helpful and professional staff at Sweet Butter. Very impressive no matter what day of the week we visit…always consistent!
  • PRICE / VALUE: Incredible ambiance, terrific friendly neighborhood vibe and amazing gourmet cuisine at this quaint cozy establishment. Very happy to be a regular here!
  • CORKAGE: NO CORKAGE CHARGE at Sweet Butter any time of day! We were so delighted to find this out! Bring your wine from home or your wine locker and Sweet Butter will welcome your libations either inside their courtyard area or at any of their sidewalk tables!
  • TOTAL BILL: There’s nothing on the Sweet Butter menu over $13.95, and most of the entrees are well below that cost. The sandwiches and salads are large enough to share. I usually end up taking half of my sandwich or salad home with me. Great portions, loaded sandwiches and delicious iced tea with free refills!

HOUSTON’S RESTAURANT… “Fans For Twenty Years!”

For more than twenty years, my husband and I have both been avid diners at Houston’s restaurants. Spanning the country, we’ve dined in the restaurant’s many locations including New Orleans, Atlanta, Orange County and Pasadena repetitive times. As one of our favorite establishments to order ribs and baked potatoes overflowing with toppings (when we’re being bad), we figured it was about time to review it. We recently visited the Pasadena Houston’s on South Arroyo Parkway to our extreme delight.

The approach to the restaurant’s front door delivered us to a peaceful harmonious state as Asianesque lanterns hanging overhead guided us toward the front door. Climbing vibrant green ivy covered one wall while the sound of water from nearby fountains created a restful and serene atmosphere even before we entered the restaurant. We had the distinct feeling we were going to really like this Houston’s.

There’s nothing like making a statement with zen surroundings, the tranquil voice of flowing water and KOI! Yes, the outdoor foyer water feature is actually a modern indoor/outdoor koi pond with colorful koi swimming back and forth greeting patrons as brilliant flashes of orange and white and black move freely among their liquified world. My husband gave me that “there-she-goes-again” look he customarily throws my way when I am in the presence of creatures of the water and land, and laughed in the dashing way he always does. As for me, I was sold. In fact, my husband had to pull me away from the fish to go inside for dinner! I could have stayed there all evening just talking to and admiring the koi. (It’s the animal lover in me, I guess!)

Once we left the friendly koi outside, we were reunited with them inside. The indoor / outdoor water feature continues when you walk through the front door. I sat for a few brief minutes while we waited for our table and reunited myself with my scaly new friends. As we waited, we had a clear view of the open kitchen, where one of the chefs diligently cooked their famous ribs, a few steaks, a Filet Mignon, a hamburger, and a couple of other beef cuts. They not only looked delicious, but they smelled incredible.

The restaurant and attached lounge area are set under dim lighting. The intricate attention to detail in the decor, seating arrangements, and continuous Asian attributes throughout add to its uniqueness.

The entire staff at Houston’s respectfully shows off their professionalism, attention to customers’ needs and adheres to a strict code of politeness and courteousness. On more than one occasion, we’ve noticed the waitstaff deliberately stopping to allow diners walking past them through the walkways of the restaurant’s interior the right of way. Their backs to the wall, a smile and welcoming greeting on their lips and in their eyes tells everyone just how important they are. It’s really amazing to witness, and even more so to experience that level of personal customer service.

Houston’s offers various seating options for your comfort and dining pleasure. You can select a spot at the bar in the lounge, or dine in the main restaurant at a booth or table. We have dined at both before, and both are equally accommodating to the feasting experience. Candles on the tables design a romantic mood, a subtle flowing Asian theme is conveyed throughout the institution and once seated, all you really have to do is relax and enjoy yourself.

Though simple and one-paged, the menu is sure to delight and satisfy. Houston’s has a posted weekly “Soup Calendar” on their menu. For $7 each, you can entertain your taste buds with such compositions as the Mexico City, the New Orleans Red Bean, the Tortilla or Baked Potato soups, the Tomato soup, the Newport Beach Clam Chowder or the Firehouse Chili. If you’re looking for more to start off with before you dive into your main course for the evening, try any one of their selections from the Starters & Sides list. Such morsels include the Grilled Artichokes, the Chicago Spinach Dip, Cheese Toast, Whole Grain Barley Salad, Coleslaw, Hand-Cut French Fries, Seasonal Vegetables and Black Beans and Rice. We are huge fans of Houston’s Chicago Spinach Dip. We’ve certainly had more than our share of it throughout the years. Its savory creaminess is evenly distributed and perfectly-blended with fresh chopped spinach, artichoke hearts, sour cream, heavy cream, shredded Monterey jack cheese, Parmesan Reggiano cheese and garlic salt then served with corn tortilla chips. A sure winner with anyone! However, a few years ago when Houston’s restaurants started serving their Grilled Artichoke starter on their menu, it too has become one of our favorites…

The bar is fully-stocked, so anything you can think up, the dexterous bartenders can skillfully craft for your sipping pleasure. We do, of course, have to tell you that Houston’s HAS NO CORKAGE FEE!!! (Yes, I was yelling that out loud!) You all know how much I love that. But despite that little tidbit of information, we should tell you that Houston’s cocktail menu and wine list is terrific as well. Your server will have excellent knowledge of suggestions for wine pairings based on what you order, so don’t forget to ask them if you require a recommendation. Now, back to the menu…

Grilled Artichokes With a Creamy Dipping Sauce

The salads at Houston’s are to die for. The several choices include the Spicy Tuna Roll Salad. It’s an inside-out spicy tuna roll with mixed greens, avocado, mango and ponzu. Then there’s the Grilled Chicken Salad (one of my favorites captured in the photo below) with mixed greens, tortilla chips, tender shaved slices of juicy chicken breast, honey-lime vinaigrette and peanut sauce. I’ve literally been eating this salad at Houston’s other locations for twenty years, and it still tastes as flavorful and perfect as the first day I experienced it! Other salad choices include the Caesar Salad with crisp romaine lettuce, Reggiano cheese, crunchy croutons and eggless Caesar dressing…or try the Traditional Salad, presented with mixed greens, house-made croutons, chopped egg and smokehouse bacon. You can also indulge in the Thai Steak & Noodle Salad that’s expertly prepared with marinated filet or rotisserie chicken, avocado, mango and herbs in a Thai dressing. All scrumptious tastes, all unique in their preparation.

Most visits to Houston’s, I’ll order the Grilled Chicken Salad. Mixed greens and tortilla strips (below) give this immense dish of Asian-essenced veggies and thinly sliced tender chicken breast a gratifying crunch, while the peanut sauce and honey-lime vinaigrette dressing add to its delectable attributes. DELICIOUSNESS!!! (Was I just yelling again)?

Grilled Chicken Salad

Rotisserie Chicken With an Apricot Glaze and Barley Salad

Houston’s entree choices are endless. There’s the Oak Grilled Trout with a Cajun seasoning, the Scottish Salmon grilled and simple, Pan Fried Fish served with coleslaw and a dill tartar sauce, the Rotisserie Chicken (pictured above) on a bed of barley salad with almonds, fresh mint, tomatoes, cranberries and radishes, the slow-cooked Barbeque Ribs, the marinated Hawaiian Rib-Eye, the aged Roasted Prime Rib and the Center Cut Filet carefully grilled over hardwood in the open kitchen.

Pan Fried Fish With Cole Slaw and Dill Tartar Sauce

Houston’s tender Oak Grilled Trout offers a Cajun seasoning sprinkled on a beautiful grill-marked Ruby Red trout. An accompaniment of fresh seasonal vegetables is available as the side, or you can order a baked potato as an alternate side. The fresh chives and butter sauce doesn’t hurt this dish either!

IMG_4950 - Copy

Oak Grilled Trout

The ribs are by far my favorite item to order from Houston’s. I request a stuffed baked potato in place of the fries it normally comes with, and ask for an additional serving of the potato toppings. The potatoes are so huge, you’ll need more. Trust me! With the fall-off-the-bone ribs, the baked potato with all the trimmings is just divine!

BBQ Ribs With a Loaded Baked Potato

Many years ago, Houston’s restaurants offered one of the most incredible Club Sandwiches I’ve ever had the pleasure of devouring. Though not on the standard menu any longer, sometimes I have been able to have one of these made at other Houston’s locations besides the one in Pasadena. If you’re lucky enough to get one of these, you will remember it forever. It truly is the epitome of Club Sandwiches!

The Houston’s Club Sandwich with Honey Mustard

Thai Steak & Noodle Salad with Thai Dressing with Marinated Filet Mignon , Mango, Peanuts, Tomatoes and Asian Noodles

INSIDER’S TIP: The Thai Dressing on the Thai Steak & Noodle Salad can sometimes be a bit too spicy. Depending on how spicy it is can vary from day to day we have found. I have started ordering this salad without the Thais dressing, and instead, with a side of the Blue Cheese dressing. That way, it’s much milder, but I can add a little heat if I want to at my discretion with a side of the Thai dressing also. Additionally, this salad can be ordered with grilled chicken instead of steak if you’re not a meat eater.

Houston’s ever popular Hardwood Grilled Center-Cut Filet is a beneficial item for those who enjoy a fantastic and memorable steak. There are other cuts at this always-packed restaurant, however, my favorite of them all is this one. Tender and flavorful, this delicious experience of lean beef, a mouthwatering creamy sauce, and a very happy stuffed baked potato on the side is simply amazing!

Hardwood Grilled Center-Cut Filet

Like a great burger? Then Houston’s is where you should be for that, too. Below, my husband tried one of the eatery’s specialties…their Cheeseburger. Made with fresh-ground beef, and offered with tomato, lettuce, onion, and Cheddar cheese inside of a house made egg bun, this sandwich is certain to win the hearts of anyone who enjoys a delicious cheeseburger…

Houston’s Cheeseburger with a House-Made Bun

And you cannot forget about a little something sweet at the end of a meal at Houston’s. Many years ago, I became a fan of the Walnut Apple Cobbler a la mode, however recently, we were introduced to the Five Nut Brownie Sundae. What can we say? A picture is worth a thousand words, right?

IMG_7391 - Copy

Five Nut Brownie Sundae

Though the Pasadena Houston’s does not have a Happy Hour, you can still amply feed two adults from their varied selections on the menu. Throw in a bottle of wine from home with no corkage charge and you’ve got another fine meal out for under $50 (including tax!)

  • DECOR / ESTABLISHMENT: The Pasadena Houston’s enhances it’s already-popular atmosphere with Asian decor inside and out. The water feature with the flowing fountains and friendly koi is a lovely welcome, while the intimate setting of the restaurant is very inviting.
  • FOOD / DRINK: We’ve never had a bad or distasteful meal in the last twenty years we’ve been patrons at Houston’s restaurants. The Pasadena location is no different. Excellent presentation of both beverages and meals, colorful displays accompanying each dish, water glasses continuously refilled without asking, and world-class flavor, flavor, flavor!
  • LOCATION: 320 South Arroyo Parkway, Pasadena CA 91105. The restaurant parallels a busy thoroughfare in the heart of Pasadena, however the relaxing ambiance of both the inside and outdoor areas and lounge patio with double-faced fireplace create a refuge from busy city boisterousness.
  • HOURS: Monday through Sunday from 11AM -10PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF : Continual coverage of our needs, refilled water glasses without asking, great attitudes and unparalleled consistent customer service throughout our meal was greatly appreciated. Our usual server, Sarah, is knowledgeable, courteous, happily answers questions and addresses our comments. She is an exceptional staff member. We always request to be seated in her section of the restaurant when she’s there.
  • PRICE / VALUEHouston’s service, attention to detail, flavorsome dishes, consistent quality and intimate unique environment all add up to one thing…great value for what you’re paying! You can enjoy the food and sips from 11AM – 10PM Monday through Sunday.
  • CORKAGE FEE: NO CORKAGE FEE!
  • PARKING: Free parking is available in the attached lot adjacent to the restaurant.
  • TOTAL BILL: $46.75 for a bottle of wine with no corkage charge, the Pan Fried Fish and the Grilled Chicken Salad. Coming in a a penny more on another visit, the total bill was $46.76 for a bottle of wine with no corkage fee, a Coca-Cola, the Grilled Chicken Salad and the Rotisserie Chicken. One could easily bring in a bottle of wine and have several appetizers for $50 (including tax) or under here as well either at the bar or in the restaurant itself. We’ll do that next time and write up a “follow-up” blog just on appetizers at the bar when we visit in the future.
