KYMA PSAROTAVERNA & OYZERI… “A Modern ‘Wave’ of Traditional Greek Cuisine!”

Often frequenting the city of Atlanta, GA for business, my husband and I felt we had to include Kyma (pronounced KEY-MA) to our list of recommened eateries for your reading enjoyment and information. If you are ever in the Buckhead area of the city, you simply must visit Kyma, a Greek seafood tavern with deep Mediterranean roots, beautifully decorated interior design with hints of silvers and blues everywhere (including the mosaic-mirrored bar), and a modern spin on classic Greek and seafood fare that will make you wonder why you never stopped here before. Executive Chef Pano Karatassos, an Atlanta native , insists on obtaining the restaurant’s seafood fresh from the Aegean Sea. Kyma, in Greek, means ‘wave’. And a wave has certainly been created with Kyma and Chef Karatassos at the helm…

Below, the freshly-prepared sparkling Kyma Mojito and Mykonos Martini made with vodka, Marie Brizard Watermelon Liqueur and a sour mix were sensational and a terrific prelude to dinner…

Kyma Mojito and Mykonos Martini

Our view from the white leather booth where we were seated showed off one of the many areas customers may dine below…

Starting with traditional Greek spreads, we ordered the Tzatziki (yougurt, cucumber and dill) and the Htipiti (roasted red peppers and feta) served with warm pita bread below…

Tzatziki, Hitpiti and Pita Bread

Next, we had one of our favorite Greek selections, the Dolmades (grapevine leaves stuffed with tomato and bulgar) with a cumin yogurt…delicious!

Dolamdes and Pita Bread

Following the Dolmades, we shared a plate of the Cheese Pies (four Greek cheeses baked in country filo dough), which was creamy, savory and the light crunch of the baked filo pastry was very satisfactory…

Kyma Cheese Pies

My husband chose the Royal Dorade (a medium flavor, semi firm Grecian fish similar to Red Snapper). For their fresh fish entrees, Kyma bastes the entire fish in olive oil, lemon and oregano, then cooks it on a wood grill before serving it fillet style with a side of cooked spinach and capers…tender, bursting with savory flavors…I almost forgot about my entree after first tasting this…

Royal Dorade

I decided upon the Whole Prawns dish (Mayan, wood-grilled giant shrimp cooked with olive oil, lemon and dill and topped with capers and served with a side of cooked spinach. Once my husband tried these, neither of us could decide if we liked the prawns or the fish better..they were both so incredible!

Whole Mayan Prawns

And for a bit of something sweet, we chose a dessert tasting, which consisted of three of their popular sweet treats. We chose the Loukoumades (a Greek-style doughnut topped with honey, chopped walnuts and cinnamon), the Kyma ice cream served in a filo pastry shell, and the ‘Boureki’ Baklava (a rolled version of traditional Baklava with candied pistachios and presented with pistachio ice cream). All amazing flavor sensations for the palate, all perfectly portioned so as not to tack on too much weight to the waistline!

Kyma Dessert Sampling

A culinary must-do if you are visiting the Buckhead neighborhood in the city of Atlanta. We will most certainly return to this ‘wave’ of Greek-style perfection on our next trip to the east coast!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Intricate placement of deep blues and silvers reflect the restaurant’s Aegean Sea motif, bright Grecian whites abound as well as the entry columns at the front door, and a coved deep blue ceiling shows off its sparkling white lights paying homage to the dark blue evening sky on the coastline of Greece.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Fresh seafood flown in from the Aegean Sea, wood-grilled whole fish and other delectable entrees, a terrific and nicely-priced menu, and refreshing crisp cocktails.
  • LOCATION: Kyma is located in the Buckhead neighborhood at 3085 Piedmont Road Northeast in Atlanta, GA 30305.
  • HOURS: Kyma is available for dining Monday through thursday from 5:30 Pm – 10 PM, Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 PM – 11 PM, and on Sundays from 4:30 PM – 10 PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: We received top notch service from our attentive and charasmatic waiter. No complaints, just two extremely satisfied customers here!
  • PRICE / VALUE: Very reasonable price for the incredible value and service received at this location.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $15 per 750mL bottle.
  • PARKING: Valet parking is available for your convenience at Kyma.
  • TOTAL BILL: For just over $70 (including tax), we enjoyed cocktails, traditional Greek starters, fresh seafood from the Aegean Sea, and even a small tasting of some of Kyma’s more popular desserts.

TAPESTRY BAR @ BREAKERS HOTEL… “Classic Ambiance With a Taste of St. Tropez!”

Palm Beach is a favorite getaway for us. We love everything Palm Beach and are happy to share our adventures and experiences with others, as they are always undeniably fabulous times. Half for my husband’s business meetings and half for pleasure, we wanted to make a point to share our review of The Breakers Hotel & Spa with our readers. Specifically, the beautiful views of the architectural building that encompasses the delightful customer service and spirit of the property as well as our enjoyable time shared at the Tapestry Bar.

We got to The Breakers Resort on the final evening of our last trip to Palm Beach. The weather really wasn’t in our favor, as it was cloudy and raining off and on. It’s Florida. Rain happens there. But despite that minor setback, we continued on to have cocktails before our dinner back at our hotel.

Housed inside is the original 1920 lobby. A stunning timepiece of the city, The Breakers is reminiscent of strolling through a massive castle from centuries gone by, just with small modernized touched that keeps it in tune with the present. The above outdoor courtyard showcases a beautiful fountain, lush foliage and towering intricately-detailed walls.

The close-up of the fountain above offers a relaxing and calming environment for a stroll before dinner or cocktails.

A year-round vacation spot for travelers and return guests, this palatial resort presents a 140-acre oceanfront expanse. Italian-Renaissance decor will enchant your visual perception of the building. The property boasts over 1,800 staff members and continues to honor it’s family heritage through the tens of millions of dollars it receives each year from the original founder’s descendants. Constant renovation, modification and enhancements are maintained to keep The Breakers looking the way it does today. Now in it’s second century of existence, this incredible institution of the area still stuns, awes and flabbergasts its visitors and regulars alike.

I thought the Bromeliad flower above with its brilliant red was beautiful. I snapped a photo to share with you. I really appreciated the way it just jumped right out at me when I walked past it…the massive foliage in the shot below shows more of the plants and palms that border the courtyard.

We felt like we were in Germany walking into a towering castle as soon as we entered the main building that led to the Tapestry Bar, where we had cocktails that evening…

The intricate ceilings continued as we approached the hallway that led us into the lounge area below…

Named for its original antique tapestries hung on the walls of the ballroom-sized space below, we selected a comfortable mahogany-carved sofa and ordered our beverages…the vintage mahogany bar was constructed from an original turn-of-the-19th-century mantle from Caxton Hall in London!

The candle-lit ambiance was very pleasant. On an elongated table behind us were five decorative glass-mosaic candle flutes that enhances the environment…

We only had a couple of martinis while we were there, because we were meeting another couple at another location. But we both selected the Basil Watermelon Martini with watermelon infused pomegranate vodka and cranberry juice as our libations before departing…fruity but not overly sweet, reasonably priced for the quality and a stunning presentation. The live jazz trio was also a nice touch!

Basil Watermelon Martini

Tapestry bar is definitely on our list to return to on our next visit to Palm Beach. We’ll get more details about their amazing Happy Hour they offer there then as well!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Out of the nine restaurants and five bars inside The Breakers Hotel & Resort, we found ourselves visiting the Tapestry Bar. The old world feel of antique tapestries, history-filled furnishings, and mahogany bar made from a mantle from a great hall in London made it quite a conversation piece.
  • FOOD / DRINK: We’ll try the food on our next visit, but as far as the cocktails are concerned, our Basil Watermelon martinis were phenomenal.
  • LOCATION: One South County Road Palm Beach, Florida 33480 inside the Breakers Hotel & Spa.
  • HOURS: Sundays through Thursdays from 5 PM – 12 midnight, then on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 PM – 1 AM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: The attention to detail and professionalism of the smiling staff was noticed and appreciated.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Fair prices for the savory high quality ingredients used.
  • CORKAGE FEE: No outside alcohol permitted inside Tapestry Bar.
  • PARKING: Valet parking at the main entrance allows for ease and quicker access into the hotel.
  • TOTAL BILL: Two Basil Watermelon martinis brought the bill to just over $28 (including tax). Would we do it again? Absolutely!

JOAN’S ON THIRD… “A Little Slice Of Gourmet Heaven!”

A reputable catering and event planning company that has spun itself into a hugely successful gourmet cafe and market, Joan’s On Third has earned our vote for one of the best gourmet cafe markets around. Sophisticated, yet casual, Joan’s On Third will delight your culinary cravings, satisfy your unique market needs and have you running back to this family-owned-and-operated establishment for more!

With convenient ample seating along the storefront’s sidewalk, Joan’s On Third also offers strategically-placed accommodations inside the market. Along marble-countered windows, tucked away cafe tables in a corner just past one of the ordering counters, and at elongated community picnic-style tables, multiple groups of strangers and friends sit together to unite in their enjoyment in one of Joan’s On Third’s gourmet sandwiches, fine barista-brewed coffee beverages and other fine items inside the market. They all share a common ground…they love it here.

As my husband and I concurred with the obvious vote of the packed cafe brimming with customers that appeared like bees busy in their hive, we decided that we love it here, too. At first entry, a huge refrigerated cheese display greets you with every type of the tasty dairy product one’s mind can conjure up. I was in some sort of fantasy, I thought. A cheese fantasy called Joan’s On Third.

As we made our way around to an ordering station, the freshly-prepared morsels we witnessed through glass-housed display cases tempted us with vibrant hues and fresh aromas. An absolute daydream of brilliantly-colored gourmet eats and home-cooked favorites such as fresh-sliced fruit, grilled asparagus, spring bean salad (cucumber, corn and white beans), Waldorf shrimp salad, grilled maple rosemary chicken breasts, beef tenderloins, toasted couscous, Tree Oyster mushrooms, grilled vegetables, lentil salad, couscous (dried berries, toasted pine nuts and raspberry vinaigrette), grilled artichokes with balsamic vinaigrette, buttermilk squash salad (basil, pickled red onion, pine nuts and yogurt), originally-created wraps (chicken, Caesar and apricot-glazed ham), bulgar salad (pecans, currants and honey-orange dressing)…I could keep going, but this article would never end. In all, let’s just say that if you want it, Joan’s On Third either has it or can make it for you.

Beside the counter where we placed our orders, I couldn’t help but snap a photo of the delicious-looking fare right beside us! Fresh-baked Rosemary Chicken, colorful steamed spring vegetables, meats stewing in sauces and gravies resonating aromatic fragrances that made our mouths water…surely so savory and amazingly ambrosial that they should have broken some kind of laws in this city.

We were enamored by the huge sandwich menu hanging on a wall before us. Contemplating the many options, I noticed there was a short rib sandwich available. That meant my husband was going to select it for his lunch. I could see it coming! Lover of all things short rib, I was correct in my assessment, as my husband did in fact pick the short rib sandwich from the list of the many delectable choices. I decided on the Tarragon Chicken Salad sandwich without the bread over a bed of greens.

Walking away from the counter with a number for our table and a soda, we passed the above wall of shelved epicurean products. It literally took fifteen minutes for me to look at everything here before finally finding my husband at the table he selected for us outside! I was in some sort of gourmet nirvana that forced me to lose track of time in some way. This, for me, was like walking into Dean & Deluca…pure epicurean heaven!

Finally arriving at our table, we were greeted by a staff member who delivered a tall corked bottles of ice cold water. That was not only a nice gesture on the restaurant’s behalf, but also much needed due to the rising temperatures outdoors. Before we knew it, our ordesr were delivered by a smiling waiter…nothing took too long to receive, too long to answer or too long for someone to find out due to the more than twenty kitchen employees and servers I counted from where we sat on the patio. I’m sure there were even more than that. Despite the number, it certainly aided in no patron being left unattended to, which was very refreshing to witness.

Short Rib Sandwich

Behold…the Joan’s On Third Short Rib sandwich (above) with melted cheese, arugula, and sweet grilled red onions on a grilled Country White bread. Even the perfection of the way the kitchen staff wraps the parchment paper around their sandwiches is meticulously executed…

Tarragon Chicken Salad

The Tarragon Chicken Salad atop a bed of greens was creamy and appetizing. The enticing flavors from the tarragon in the chicken and the delightful crunch of apple and toasted pecans was spot on.

Joan’s On Third also offers a full gourmet coffee bar complete with professional barristas to assist you in selecting the perfect cup of coffee to compliment your meal. Of course, Joan’s On Third is still a popular catering company and event planning business, which will delight in catering your next special occasion, corporate event or any other reason for a beautifully appointed opportunity. We liked what we saw and experiences here, and recommend it to all of our readers!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Quaint, cozy, sophisticated without being too upscale, and a terrific place to get most any epicurean delicacy or trimming you have a desire for!
  • FOOD / DRINK: Fresh ingredients, quickly prepared, beautiful presentation and meticulous delivery of a pretty darn great sandwich and salad!
  • LOCATION: Joan’s On Third is located at 8350 West Third Street in Los Angeles, CA 90048.
  • HOURS: Joan’s On Third serves their patrons Monday through Saturday from 8 AM – 8 PM, and on Sundays from 8 AM – 6 PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Servers and waitstaff swarm this venue making sure customers’ needs are unattended, orders are brought quickly to the tables and every employee remembers to smile and genuinely seems like they enjoy being there.
  • PRICE / VALUE: We feel the price was reasonable and comparable to other such restaurants with a market/cafe/kitchen concept. It can get a bit crowded, however, but we found that there is a smooth transition between arriving, getting a table and departing, as the venue is so large now compared to its size previously.
  • CORKAGE FEE: Joan’s On Third does not allow outside alcohol on the premises.
  • PARKING: There is parking behind the restaurant advertised on the restaurant’s website as well as metered street parking in front.
  • TOTAL BILL: We paid $25.82 for a canned soda, the Short Rib Sandwich and the Tarragon Chicken Salad (no bread, but placed on a bed of greens). We also had a tall icy cold bottle of water and cups delivered to the table for no additional charge.

TRULUCK’S SAN DIEGO… “La Jolla’s ‘True Luck’ Restaurant!”

Well, we said we would do it, and we did. After our experience in Miami at the Truluck’s restaurant there, we had to try the one in San Diego to see if it compared. And compare it did! There’s really nothing negative we can say about this seafood and steak restaurant. It’s more of an institution really. The quality, consistency, precision to detail, competitive customer service and above average overall ambiance is just incredible. Known countrywide for their incredible award-winning seafood, stone crab claws, and succulent steaks, Truluck’s is by far a leading company far ahead of the game.

The entrance to the San Diego Truluck’s near La Jolla is welcoming, offers spacious outdoor patios and allows for most any celebration to be enjoyed easily.

Above, the huge glass-encased wine cellar right next to our table. We dined at the Captain’s Table, which is where the owner sits when he visits the restaurant. Request this location when you have dinner here. The view from the table allows for oversight of most everything going on in the establishment from the lounge, the entertainment at the Baby Grand and the entire restaurant. No wonder Truluck’s San Diego was voted “Best Wine List” in 2011 by the San Diego Magazine Reader’s Poll and The Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence!

But that’s not the only recognition this specific Truluck’s has received. There’s much more to their list of accreditations:

Best of the Best 2011 / 2012 and Best Seafood 2011 / 2012 by the San Diego Magazine Reader’s Poll, the Best Service 2012 San Diego Magazine Critic’s Choice Award, Best Happy Hour 2011 and Best Service 2011 by San Diego Magazine Reader’s Poll, Best of the Best, Best Seafood, Most Impressive Decor, Best Service and Happiest Happy Hour by San Diego Home & Garden Lifestyles, Best Service, Best Wine List, and Best Seafood by SanDiegoRestaurants.com (Diner’s Poll), Best Steak by La Jolla Light Reader’s Poll, and was rated Excellent for food and service in 2011 by Zagat. And there are plenty more where those came from!

The Truluck’s menu…just wait until you see what’s inside!

Fresh Delectable Bread Service

Fresh crusty bread is promptly served to the table by an attentive waiter. Chilled sweet cream butter is also provided.

Crab Display Before Ordering

The presentation of one of Truluck’s best-known specialties…crab claws…is presented to patrons before ordering. This is not only entertaining, but the visual enchantment is also worth while. I snapped a photo as our server was explaining their offerings of the evening above.

Pinot Noir Selection From the Wine Cellar

Upon arriving, we chose a bottle of 2009 Tolosa Pinot Noir, which we both enjoyed. Its huge nose and delicious finish was perfect for sipping while waiting to be served dinner.

Large Stone Crab Claws

As a starter, we selected four of Truluck’s Stone Crab claws. Pre-cracked for ease of enjoying and served over ice with lemon and a creamy tasteful sauce, we knew these would be delectable. And they were!

Truluck’s Wedge Salad

Next, we agreed to share one of the Wedge Salads, which was so memorable from our visit to the Miami, FL Truluck’s. It was just as good at this locale, if not better! Crisp, chilled and a beautiful visual presentation with all the flavor sensations we remembered from before.

Filet Mignon Oscar-Style

Above and below, the Filet Oscar was cooked to a perfect medium temperature and was accompanied with an Oscar topping of grilled asparagus, fresh crab meat and Bearnaise sauce. What a beautifully presented and visually-pleasing contract against the brilliant green asparagus. We did, however, get a little carried away with the Bearnaise sauce!

Interior View of the Filet Mignon…with Extra Bearnaise Sauce!

We enjoyed the below dish so much during our Truluck’s experience in Miami that we had to get it again in CA. The Miso-Glazed Sea Bass…MSC certified South Georgia Chilean Sea Bass served with crab fried rice and a chilled cucumber slaw. Immensely satisfying from first bite to the last taste on your fork, this is one of our all-time favorite Sea Bass dishes ever! The crab fried rice beneath is tender and erupting with flavor, while the Chilean Sea Bass is delicate, tender and almost melts in your mouth upon contact!

Miso- Glazed Sea Bass with Crab Fried Rice

Of course, our server had to present us with their dessert tray after dinner. The below left photo shows Truluck’s extensive array of sweet temptations. However, you already know what we ordered, probably…the Carrot Cake! A little coffee on the side led to the perfect conclusion to a wonderful meal, spectacular service and amazing ambiance!

By the way…I know I mentioned this in our review of the Miami Truluck’s restaurant some time ago, but this restaurant has THE BEST CARROT CAKE EVER!!!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Having been voted ‘ Most Impressive Decor’ by San Diego Home & Garden Lifestyles, there’s reason this happened. Truluck’s signature underwater vases of pale pink orchids are displayed atop the division wall between the lounge and the main restaurant, while the upscale feel of the steakhouse and seafood haven will have you relaxed, feeling at home and enjoying the intricate detailed design of the entire establishment.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Amazing Stone crab claws, succulent steaks, crisp salads and refreshing beverages. There’s not a thing that we found to be unsatisfactory during our attendance for dinner.
  • LOCATION: This Truluck’s restaurant is located near La Jolla at 8990 University Center Lane in San Diego, CA 92122.
  • HOURS: Truluck’s in San Diego is open daily for Dinner Monday through Saturday from  5 PM – 10 PM, and on Sunday evenings from 5 Pm – 9 PM. The Stone Crab lounge is open daily from 4:30 PM, where cocktail hour is presented until 7:30 PM Monday through Sunday.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Todd Perry, a managing partner of the establishment, made sure we were seated in a satisfactory location with a beautiful view inside of the entire restaurant. Corey was our waiter, and we cannot express in words his exemplary service. Corey was informative, enlightening, amusing and supportive throughout our entire meal. We’ll be sure to request his section the next time we dine at the San Diego Truluck’s.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Taking a look at what we enjoyed for dinner, we expected the price for everything to exceed $100, which it did.  But well worth the splurge, and well worth the additional consideration when we added in the quality of the cuisine we enjoyed, the incredible and attentive service and the stunning interior decor.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $20 per bottle, just remember that on Wednesdays if you purchase a bottle of select wine or champagne from the bar, they will give you 50% off the regular price!
  • PARKING: Self parking is available for guests in the adjacent parking garage, however we recommend the valet service for a simple $8. It will save you a lot of time and allow you to relax and not have to worry about parking your vehicle.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our total bill came in over $100, but we were more than happy to accept that charge considering what we received.

BRICKS & SCONES… “Tea, Coffee and Simple Savory Bites!”

Another favorite spot we frequent quite a bit on Larchmont Boulevard is the green foliage-adorned one-of-a-kind coffee and tea cafe, Bricks & Scones. It’s a great place to visit if you’re looking for a quiet spot either outdoors on the red brick umbrella-flocked patio, or inside in one of the multiple spaces there.  I find myself going there often to read or work on my writing or on articles for SavorHour.com.  It’s relaxing and I really love being there.

Upon entering this quaint, cottage-esque coffee house, you will notice the massive fabric-draped chandelier hovering above you, while an intriguing spiral staircase wraps its way around it. What’s upstairs? A designated “quiet zone” with little nooks for reading, studying or just hiding yourself away while writing the next great American novel. (It could happen)! On the first floor inside, there is also a larger expanse with comfortable seating areas just past the ordering counter.

As you turn your attention back to the counter after admiring the beautiful decor of Bricks & Scones, a multitude of colorful chalk-written options are presented to you via several blackboards hanging everywhere you look. From hot and cold teas, savory hot and iced coffee selections, sweet temptations that will not allow you to pass them by and a board listing all-day breakfast options and meal choices from sandwiches and wraps to salads and soups and even bowls of fresh fruit.

But my absolute favorite part is the relaxed and open feel of the patio, where colored umbrellas unite to shield patrons from the sun as well as enhance the already beautiful appeal of the courtyard. There are multiple outlets for powering electronics, and the red bricks that pave the way remind me of those Old St. Louis pavers that are commonly used to create driveways of southern plantation homes and winding garden paths. Wrought iron gates and tables adorn the out-of-doors area and the eclectic combination of planters, table-and-chair offerings and massive foliage and climbing ivy creates a perfect setting for letting one’s writing creativity roam free at last…free at last.

As we all know, creativity at any level will cause some form of mental exhaustion. If I could summon the power to never sleep or eat and just write 24 hours a day, I would. But that’s just not humanly possible for any of us. Not to worry, because Bricks & Scones has many solutions for that…

Above, the iced tea is refreshing, icy cold and delicious. I usually add a couple of slices of lemon to mine and a wee bit of sweetener. Sublime and definitely a boost well accepted.

Cashew Chicken Salad

Above, the delicious Cashew Chicken Salad with mixed greens, tomatoes, salted cashews, chopped chicken breast meat, dried cranberries and mouthwatering sweet house vinaigrette dressing.

Turkey Pesto Mozzarella Panini on Ciabatta Bread

Above and below, the Turkey Pesto Mozzarella Panini on Ciabatta bread. The flavor and experience you will have when you bite into this scrumptious sandwich will keep it in your memory forever.  Served with an arugula and tomato salad, the turkey, mozzarella, fresh basil and tangy-sweet balsamic glaze on this amazing provision will force you to return soon for more!

The Caprese Panini (below) is filled with creamy fresh mozzarella, tomato, flavorsome basil and that same incredible balsamic glaze that comes on the Turkey Pesto Mozzarella Panini…not sure how they make this balsamic glaze, but whatever they’re doing, we hope they keep it up!

Caprese Panini

With the Caprese Panini, we enjoyed a bowl of Bricks & Scones’ Tomato Basil Soup. Made from scratch in the kitchen, this hot vessel of tomato goodness was rich with flavor and perfect for that cozy feeling when there’s a slight chill in the air some evenings.

How about a generous square of delicious Apple Crumb Cake…

And there’s nothing like a beautiful afternoon, a cool breeze blowing through treetops and a steaming mug of hot green tea flavored with the essence of grapefruit…

Bricks & Scones is also very proud of their environmentally-friendly policy. Their use of recycled paper bags, potato starch based biodegradable utensils, compostable cups and straws and other such items show just how much the owners care about our community and our charming neighborhood.

INSIDER’S TIP: Other bonuses include free Wi-Fi and 10% off your tea or coffee order with a student ID or if you bring in your own mug! The kind friendly folks at Bricks & Scones are happy to help in any way they possibly can. They’ve already outdone themselves with this neighborhood gem!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Words cannot fully explain in detail what this place does for us. We’ve become habitual “Sconers!

VERSAILLES CUBAN RESTAURANT… “Authentic Cuban Cuisine in the Heart of Miami!”

Accompanying my husband on a business trip he took to Miami FL, I mentioned that I was very interested in experiencing authentic Cuban food. I had never experienced truly authentic Cuban food before. Having been to Miami in the past, he suggested we stop in at Versailles. The restaurant has been dishing up fine Cuban cuisine for nearly forty years. And they do not plan to be slowing down anytime soon. Positioned in the center of Miami’s Cuban community, and having become a symbol of accomplishment and integrity, this iconic family-owned establishment offers so much more than just a great cup of Cuban coffee. It was also fun to watch my husband order and converse with our waiter in Spanish! I love it when he does that, and seemingly, so did our waiter!

What better way to start our lunch at this popular Cuban establishment than with a couple of classic Mojitos? They were perfectly cold, minty and incredibly refreshing. In fact, we ordered two more to be brought out to us with our meals. This location seats up to 400 guests, which would explain their more than ample parking areas surrounding the eatery. Our waiter told us the restaurant and its three parking lots take up an entire block in Little Havanah! We were definitely in the right place for Cuban cuisine.

Refreshing Mojitos

As we perused the menu for a minute, fresh bread from the in-house bakery arrived at our table. You may say, “Well…it’s just bread!” But it wasn’t at all ‘just bread’. It was beautiful to observe, artistic in design and nearly melted in our mouths when eaten. Slathered with a garlic olive oil after being removed from the oven, these crisp slices of perfectly bakes dough were really incredible and worth savoring slowly.

Versailles Bread Brushed With Garlic Olive Oil

I felt a bit perplexed at the multitude of items available on the menu. My husband noticed this and suggested two items. The first, a Cuban Sampler plate called, quite simply, The Classic. This dish was presented proudly by our waiter and included such fare as white rice and black beans, Picadillo (spiced ground beef), roast pork, sweet plantains, ham croquettes, yucca and a tamale. Definitely a hearty lunch. But very tasty.

The Classic

The second dish suggested was the Chicken Versailles. Grilled marinated chicken with a Cuban Mojo, Moros rice, sweet plantains and ham croquettes. The grilled chicken was tender and cooked to perfection. The Moros rice in the photo below is sort of a Cuban version of rice and beans. Found throughout the Carribbean and Brazil, it is compiled of onions, garlic, bell peppers, oregano and other flavorsome ingredients. The darkened color comes from the rice and the black beans being cooked together. It is also commonly called “congri” in Miami.

Chicken Versailles

To top off our enjoyable meal, my husband sipped on a cup of Cuban coffee. Our waiter laughingly called it “jet fuel”, and I discovered why after taking a sip of the powerful brew myself. It was a bit too strong for my taste, but then again, it is a type of espresso. I did, however, appreciate it’s potency. Cuban coffee originated in Cuba after espresso machines were first imported there from Italy. Drinking this type of coffee is known widely as a cultural and social activity within Cuba, South Florida and the Florida Keys. It’s a strong, yet memorable cup of joe!

Versailles Cuban Coffee

Noted as the “World’s Most Famous Cuban Restaurant”, the establishment also offers fresh-baked items at a walk-up service window outside that’s terrifically convenient for a quick cup of Cuban coffee and a few pastries from the in-house bakery. On your next trip to Miami, stop by Versailles. Even if you don’t have time for lunch, grab a cup of joe and some scrumptious bakery items such as their empanadas, pastries, their popular Tres Leches, or just a little something sweet to take on the plane ride home with you!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Towering floor-to-ceiling mirrors, classic feel inside, green and white checkered tiled flooring, dark green borders and panel highlights throughout the restaurant, varied seating areas, and LOTS of customers at all hours of the day.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Quality Cuban cuisine that is flavorsome and authentic.
  • LOCATION: Versailles is located at 3555 Southwest 8th Street in Miami FL 33135-4196.
  • HOURS: Open Monday through Thursday from 8 AM – 2 AM, Fridays from 8 AM – 3:30 AM, Saturdays from 8 AM – 4:30 AM, and on Sundays from 9 Am – 2 AM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Professional and punctual, helpful and entertaining.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Reasonably priced for what you will get at Versailles of Miami.
  • CORKAGE FEE: No outside bottles allowed at Versailles.
  • PARKING: There is more than ample parking with three separate lots, making the entire property the size of an entire neighborhood block!
  • TOTAL BILL: Four Mojitos, one Cuban Sampler (The Classic), the Chicken Versailles and a cup of Cuban coffee came in under $40, which was extremely reasonable in our opinion considering the quality and portion size of the food ordered.

LOS OLIVOS CAFE & WINE MERCHANT… “Wine Spectator Award Of Excellence Recipient!”

Link

A fun and convenient post-wine tasting venue is Los Olivos Cafe. Perfect for lunch and dinner, our last trip offered delicious fare and a relaxed ambiance. Downtown Los Olivos is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. We love it so much because of it’s excellent cuisine and cozy feel. The Los Olivos downtown area is thriving with busy tasting rooms and a relaxed yet upscale, casual feel. Los Olivos Cafe will welcome you with the same.

Above, the entry sign that hangs from a weather-aged wooden beam amidst the foliage that welcomes every patron into it’s charming abode. Below, a view of Los Olivos Cafe from across the street.Originally, a local deli, this neighborhood landmark was eventually renovated into Los Olivos Cafe. Having originally only having 3 wines on the menu during it’s deli lifetime, this cafe now boasts over 500 wine varieties on their collective list, including their own label from a private vineyard the proprietors own and personally tend. Los Olivos Cafe was also awarded the Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence!

The cafe menu offers a select array of dishes to inspire and enlighten most any palate. Updated frequently due to the use of local ingredients, check the menu before going to see what’s been added, removed for seasonal reasons or enhanced…

We stopped in for a late lunch on our last visit. Fresh focaccia bread was served to us at our favorite table beside a glass-encased fireplace. Flavorful and delicious, the bread is enhanced with fresh locally-grown herbs and Los Olivos Cafe’s own labeled dipping oil…

My husband ordered the incredible Alba Pizza, which incorporates a variety of mushrooms, ricotta cheese, Arugula, Parmesan cheese and truffle oil atop a delightfully delicious crispy and soft pizza dough…

Alba Pizza

Below, I chose the Skirt Steak Cobb Salad, with tender strips of steak, bacon, boiled egg slices, Romaine lettuce, fresh tomato, avocado and Parmesan cheese. Each bite was succulent, crisp and had just the right amount of flavor!

Skirt Steak Cobb Salad

You can see by the phtos how important the owners at Los Olivos Cafe feel it is to include fresh locally-grown, and mostly organic, ingredients in their dishes. They just love what they do, and they execute the cuisine very well.

AZUL @ MANDARIN ORIENTAL HOTEL MIAMI… “Exquisite Dining With Views of Beautiful Biscayne Bay!”

There is a restaurant tucked away inside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Brickell Key in Miami, Florida that encompasses the true meaning of exquisite dining. That restaurant is named Azul. Like its name connotates, during the day, the waters of Biscayne Bay reflect their turquoise blue colors in the Miami sunlight. After dark engulfs the area, a view of the enchanting lighted Miami skyline adds to the allure of this magical part of the world.

View off the Azul outdoor balcony overlooking the Miami skyline above.

Once we were seated, a courteous and efficient server introduced himself, welcomed us, and delivered flaky savory petite breads to our reserved table. One, a cornbread concoction laden with not-too-spicy jalapeno peppers enriched with a delicate sweetness. The other, a bakery style round crusty adaptation with a delicate texture on the inside.

After the baked items were devoured by us, we were each presented with a treat from the chef below…a soft Brioche rectangle remove of its outer crust then topped with just the essence of specific Asian-influenced vegetables, spicy brown mustard, a thin petite filet of freshly seared chilled halibut topped by an oval of watermelon radish and a touch of maple brown sugar.

Brioche With Seared Halibut and Japanese Vegetable Artistry

Next came an appetizer…below, a photo of the seared Ahi, in which each fold-over of fish houses a ball of cold watermelon, accompanied by a light sprinkling of Asian-style fresh vegetables for visual presentation, thin crisp Parmesan disks and an accompaniment of Asian mustard and a basil puree drizzle.

Seared Ahi Tuna With Parmesan Discs and Colorful Enhancements

To cleanse the palate before our main courses arrived, the Chef sent out two glass vessels of pureed watermelon and cucumber. So refreshing!

My husband chose the Brown Butter Poached Halibut with the Toasted Pita and Heirloom Tomato Salad, minted yogurt, brown butter cashews and Maine lobster.

My selection, below, was the Risotto Di Maro, which consisted of fresh snapper, scallops, clams, mussels, calamari, saffron and peas…

Coincidentally, it was also my birthday. The Chef sent the below presentation out to aide in our celebration…

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Beachy hues with an artisan-style bar and dynamic views of Biscayne Bay from every window.

  • PARKING: We were staying in the hotel, so Valet had our vehicle in the hotel guest parking structure. However, valet can also take your car if you are just stopping in for dinner as well.
  • TOTAL BILL: Though we spent over $250 including champagne and cocktails before we were seated at our window table, it was well worth the splurge. Especially since we were celebrating a special occasion!

TRULUCK’S MIAMI… “Best Stone Crab Claws & Best Carrot Cake EVER!”

Another incredible dinner location in Miami is Truluck’s. Just over the bridge from Brickell Key sits one of the most consistent upscale chain restaurants specializing in steaks, seafood, and especially Florida Stone Crab Claws. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit a Truluck’s restaurant, then you haven’t experienced how positively life-changing it can be. Since our stop there, we haven’t been the same since! (In a good way!)

It was our first evening in Miami. We were tired, had been traveling all day, and just wanted a good meal somewhere close to our hotel. Fortunately, the hotel Concierge guided us to Truluck’s. What an amazing start to our visit to Miami…

Upon our arrival, we noticed this towering tree above in the front of the restaurant. It was so beautiful and unique, I snapped a quick photo of it to include in this review…

Everywhere you look in this establishment, there are towering clear glass vases filled with underwater pink orchids…so stunning…

We started with Champagne. Our flight was not the easiest, so we decided to settle our nerves and relax with a few drinks while we perused the extensive menu…

The fresh-baked bread that was brought to us with our beverages was prepared without flaw, soft on the inside and crusty on the outer perimeter…

Known for their Florida Stone Crab Claws, we opted for four of the medium-sized portions for a starter…

Florida Stone Crab Claws

We shared one of Truluck’s Wedge Salads. It was crisp, chilled, and had the perfect amount of Bleu Cheese Dressing, fresh crisp bits of bacon and chunks of fresh Bleu Cheese!

Truluck’s Wedge Salad

We both finally decided on our entrees. My husband chose the Miso-Glazed Sea Bass…South Georgian Chilean Sea Bass served with crab-fried rice and a chilled cucumber slaw below…

Below, I chose the Alaskan Halibut Pontchartrain Style with lightly blackened Halibut, crawfish, gulf shrimp, and Blue Crab in a piquante Creole cream sauce…

We also indulged in a side order of their Blue Crab and Lobster Mac and Cheese below!

Blue Crab & Lobster Mac & Cheese

And though we didn’t eat it at the restaurant, we were convinced to take a slice of the Carrot Cake back to our hotel in a “to go” box. That proved to be a very good idea! I have proclaimed this carrot cake the BEST CARROT CAKE ever thus far!

Truluck’s Famous Carrot Cake

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: We were really WOWED by the presentation, ambiance, relaxing interior, modern steakhouse-style booths and sense of peacefulness here.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Fresh chilled sweet Stone Crab claws, crisp refreshing and colorful Wedge Salad piled high with crunchy bacon and mounds of Blue Cheese chunks, out of this world Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass, delicious Pontchartrain Sauce and THE best carrot cake I ever have had, and probably ever WILL have in my life!
  • LOCATION: Truluck’s is located at 777 Brickell Avenue in Miami, FL 33131.
  • HOURS: Serving 5 PM – 10 PM Sunday through Thursday, and 5 PM – 11 PM Fridays and Saturdays.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Professional, great personalities and attitudes, always smiling and genuinely get their guests in a better mood than they were in before they walked into the establishment!
  • PRICE / VALUE: No pondering this at all. You simply get what you pay for here. And that amounts to a lot!
  • CORKAGE FEE: Outside bottles are not allowed inside of this Truluck’s location, however there is a wide selection of fine wines in-house.
  • PARKING: Valet parking is available at the front of Truluck’s for your convenience.
  • TOTAL BILL: We spent just under $220 including tax, but the experience was well worth the expenditure. Will we visit Truluck’s again in the future? Absolutely we will!

PETROS @ FESS PARKER WINE COUNTRY INN & SPA… “It’s Greek To Me!”

Another favorite dinner location after a day in the wine country is Petros in charming Los Olivos. Located inside Fess Parker’s Wine Country Inn & Spa, the Californian-Hellenic cuisine is a refreshing change to the typical evening fare in the area.

The approach to this Grand Avenue location in Los Olivos is warm and inviting. We arrived for dinner before sunset after visiting several wineries in the Santa Ynez Valley…

The main dining room of Petros is beautifully adorned with light-colored woods, earth-toned fabrics and metallic details such as copper condiment holders and napkin rings…

Fresh artisan bread that was freshly baked for us was presented with a dipping olive oil and a tasty hummus spread below…

Below,we ordered the Spanakopita for a starter. It was delicious! With a house-made flaky phyllo exterior, it was stuffed with spinach, feta cheese, fresh dill and green onions complimented by a few olives and creamy tzatziki…

Moussaka

Above and below, I chose the Moussaka dish for my entree. Perfectly crisped above, then tender and succulent on the inside after I revealed it’s scrumptious filling below, this classic Greek selection is creted by combining eggplant, ground beef, tomatoes and a homemade Bechamel sauce served “village style” right in the dish it was cooked in.

Below, my husband elected to go with the Grilled Lamb Sandwhich. Tender and savory slow-cooked lamb with caramelized onions, tomatoes, arugula, whole grain mustard and crumbled goat cheese served on a delightful ciabatta bread with a side of arugula salad.

The light of the roaring fireplace above in the Petros dining room reflected against the light knotty pine wood floors. Such a cozy romantic place for an early dinner…below, the Petros sign after dark…

SPAGHETTI HOUSE BY ORRIS… “Little Plates With Enormous Flavor!”

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS RESTAURANT IS NOW CLOSED.

When my husband and I rave to others about the petite revamped Spaghetti House by Orris, they commonly inquire what the name means. After doing a bit of research, we found that the word “orris” is the root of the iris plant, which in age-old times it was combined with cinnamon and other spices to create love potions. Ironically, the name suits this establishment because when you dine at this eatery, you will feel, smell and taste love all around you. Don’t let the name on the building’s facade fool you, however. Just because it still says ‘Orris’, and because the menu says ‘Orris’ when it’s presented to you, and your check says ‘Orris Restaurant’ at the top, you ARE in deed at Spaghetti House by Orris!

Chef Hideo Yamashiro, known as Chef “Shiro” to most, closed down his original “Orris” restaurant at the quaint neighborhood location earlier this year in January. However, upon re-opening the same locale shortly thereafter, and renaming it Spaghetti House by Orris, it was transformed into a Japanese-essenced fusion pasta eatery. Chef Shiro also operates and owns Shiro restaurant in Pasadena, which we will HAVE to try on our next trek there. If the food at Spaghetti House by Orris is even the slightest indication of the experience of flavorsome cuisine we’ll find at Shiro, I know we’ll be happy to try it there as well.

Open for dinner only, and closed on Mondays, the open kitchen you will witness as you enter Spaghetti House by Orris is fun, bright and incredibly busy. At your first step through the front door, the savory aromas wafting throughout the restaurant will pull you inside and prove to your culinary intelligence that you have arrived at the right establishment for a meal not to soon be forgotten.

Above, Japanese glass bowls ornament the wall directly across from the open kitchen area, a glass of Cabernet before dinner, the chalk-written menu specials of the evening, a view of the kitchen staff in motion, the front of the menu, the posted sidewalk menu outside of the restaurant as you enter the establishment’s front patio, a view of one of the kitchen staff preparing a diner’s selection and a photo of the front patio dining space.

The menu is limited, but the selection will amaze your palate and visual senses. The dishes are pleasurable. Plain and simple. Chef Shiro is known for being “meticulously picky” about his fresh ingredients. The photos below are witness to that, and what we experienced at Spaghetti House by Orris recently…

Salmon Croquettes

Above and below, we started with Chef Shiro’s Salmon Croquettes. Quite a colorful and brilliant presentation. When cut into below, it just kept getting better. Delicious creamy salmon inside, a flavorful light crunch on the exterior texture and all around deliciousness! Other than my thinking about just a tiny spritz of lemon juice on these beautiful bites, they were sensational!

We then tried the Grilled Japanese Eggplant with Burrata and Parmesan below…tender slow-cooked eggplant, Burrata and Parmesan cheeses on top and flavor that just would not stop…

Japanese Grilled Eggplant With Burrata & Parmesan

Below, the Albacore Cups really impressed me personally. Hitting a hight point with me, the arugula surrounding the endive filled with seared Albacore tuna was such a delightful treat…beneath all that arugula lies perfectly seared Albacore tuna resting in the fresh leaves of endive…

Albacore Cups

After tasting three different savory appetizers, we moved on to the entrees. Below, the Shrimp Mouse Ravioli in A Shiitake Mushroom Sauce…delicate ravioli casings filled with savory shrimp mousse heightened even more by the Shiitake mushroom sauce it was accompanied by. Perfection in a bowl…

Shrimp Mouse Ravioli In A Shiitake Mushroom Sauce

Next, we tasted the Seafood Marinara dish below. A popular choice among locals at the restaurant and recommended by the waitstaff at the eatery…tender, perfectly-cooked sizeable scallops, shrimp and calamari intertwined with delicious and flavorful unforgettable marinara sauce and spaghetti with fresh tomatoes and basil…

Seafood Marinara

Our next selection was the pasta with a braised meat sauce, which was phenomenal. My husband could not stop exclaiming his love of this dish as the evening progressed…

Spaghetti & Meat Sauce

Below, the Mushrooms and Takana Mustard Greens with White Wine and Garlic was astounding. I chose this specifically, and my husband ate most of it before I could get back to it. A hidden sweetness, seemingly from caramelized onions in the dish, presented a refreshing flavor. A hearty and well-balanced finish…

Mushrooms & Takana Mustard Greens With White Wine & Garlic

We succumed to our sweet tooth after dinner by sharing a scoop of the Fogleman’s Chocolate Ice Cream. (Can I use the term “heaven in a bowl” twice in this article?) I especially liked the presentation…simple and effortless, the ice cream was served in a frosted dish that both served to keep the dessert cool as well as provide a visually-stimulating display…

Folgleman’s Chocolate Ice Cream

The bottom line…we enjoyed our culinary endeavor when we dined at Spaghetti House by Orris. Would we go back? Yes, we would. The cuisine is delicious and meticulously presented, flavor abounds in everything and one can tell that careful planning and artistic flair went into each dish designed and created by Chef Shiro himself. We enjoyed our dinner and were happy to write this review about such a terrific little restaurant!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: This eatery can get pretty packed, and reservations are not taken, so be prepared to wait a bit if you’re planning on dining here. There are tables on the covered front patio, but the waiters weren’t serving outside when we visited. The noise level inside was very loud, due to the acoustics of the small interior dining room. However, the colorful glass Japanese bowls hung on one wall, interior general feel of the place, business of the action in the open kitchen, aromas of the delicious dishes being prepared and finally, the flavor of the food ordered will force you to overlook the loudness of your neighbors dining around you.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Scrumptious cuisine, meticulous presentation, and well worth waiting if needed to get into this great little pasta house!
  • LOCATION: The restaurant is located at 2006 Sawtelle Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA 90025. It’s on the east side of Sawtelle Boulevard between Santa Monica and Olympic
  • HOURS: Spaghetti House by Orris is open only for dinner. Tuesday through Friday from 6 PM – 9:30 PM, Saturdays from 5:30 PM – 10:30 PM, Sundays from 5:30 PM – 9 PM, and the restaurant is closed on Mondays.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Helpful, ready to answer questions and give suggestions is needed.
  • PRICE / VALUE: We feel the price is well worth the value of what you will get at this eatery.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $12 per bottle.
  • PARKING: Metered street parking is available. There is also parking behind the restaurant.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our total bill for everything came to over $65, but we would definitely recommending the splurge. A party of two could easily go to dinner for under $50 (including tax) by ordering two entrees for $11 or $12 a piece, sharing an appetizer and also a dessert.

SWEET BUTTER KITCHEN, CAFE & MARKETPLACE… “How Sweet It Is To Lunch At Sweet Butter!”

A couple of times a month, I meet some of my girlfriends that live in the Sherman Oaks area for a long lunch to catch up on the goings on in our busy lives. Over the last several months, our latest spot for lunching has been Sweet Butter Kitchen on the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Matilija Avenue. Since we have been regular patrons, I cannot imaging there NOT being a Sweet Butter. In fact, I really don’t quite know how I got along without it’s existence before we started going there.

Leslie Danelian and husband Rick Berge have really outdone themselves since opening Sweet Butter in November of 2010. If you’re either from the area originally, or if you’ve lived here for a number of years, you’ll probably remember Leslie’s Sweet Somethings Catering Company in Sherman Oaks. If you don’t, or haven’t lived here long enough to remember it, don’t worry, because Leslie has taken her twenty years of culinary and planning experience and created Sweet Butter! (Thank you, Leslie!) Having become the hot spot to lunch with friends, enjoy Brunch and Breakfast, or a bottle of wine from home with a 6 PM early dinner, Sweet Butter is THE place to relax, enjoy and just indulge in what Leslie and her staff have to offer.

Designed by talented creative artist, Carrie Vose, the eatery offers seating outside along the front of it’s light-yellow-with-chocolate-brown-accents exterior on Ventura Boulevard and continues around the corner along the side of the building on Matilija Avenue. Complete with heaters for chilly evenings and built-in misters for warmer days, I don’t think the owners of Sweet Butter could have put more thought into the comfort of their customers. With sizable bistro tables surrounding the restaurant’s perimeter and a cozy courtyard for additional dining, Sweet Butter offers even more surprises when you walk into their market to place your order.

As you enter the main entrance through a beautifully crafted wrought iron gate with the letters “SB” conveniently positioned on them, you feel as thought you are entering a quaint indoor garden. There are fresh herbs growing from unique hanging baskets, encouraging statement signs everywhere you look, little notes written on small chalkboards with inspiring messages, an enormous chandelier hanging from the rafters over the interior courtyard made of fastened branches with tiny white lights, and all of the walls… exterior and interior…are a calming light yellow hue…the same color of sweet butter.

There’s so much fun inside the Sweet Butter market! The photos below show the menu inside the Sweet Butter market handwritten in chalk and posted on one wall, their hand-selected artisan items, themed pastas, books, candies, Sweet Butter logo tote bags, bottled soda, and other little tidbits will make you smile along the way, or make someone else’s day when you present them with a Sweet Butter gift carefully wrapped by the staff!

Above, the massive framed chalk-written menu board hangs on a wall inviting customers to ponder what they are in the mood for, while individual laminated menus are also available in the courtyard foyer as well as in a holder on the wall beside the chalk menu. Selections include such delectables like sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, pastries, muffins, incredible savory breads, and so much more. Most items are served all day, then some only until 10:30 AM. Only the freshest ingredients are used when preparing meals for customers at Sweet Butter, so sometimes, some of the standard fare won’t be available every day. But most of the time, it is. Sweet Butter’s Breakfast menu offers such delicious selections as omleles, scrambles, breakfast burritos, and parfaits. Starting at 11 AM, the eatery serves lunch, which includes such fare as their crispy fried chicken, sliders, grilled chicken, and afternoon snacks for kids (and adults, too!) There are even boxed lunches available for twelve dollars! Take-out orders are convenient, and the team at Sweet Butter is available for catering jobs as well (that’s not a surprise with Leslie at the helm!) And there’s a Weekday Menu as well as a Weekend Menu. Oh no…no more Meatloaf Sandwiches??? Hopefully they’ll return again soon. Until then, you can satisfy your cravings with any of the below items I’ve personally experienced, or any of the other delicious items on the Sweet Butter menu…

Sweet Butter Iced Tea

Don’t forget Sweet Butter also offers a solution to your sweet tooth as well. Have your pick from their amazing array of options like their scones, cookies, layer cakes, candies and other delectables! And if you love Afternoon Tea, Sweet Butter offers Afternoon Tea Time between 2 PM and 6 PM by reservation.

The attention to detail at Sweet Butter is obvious. Below, simple napkins and dining utensils are held by steel cut oatmeal cans (I always thought those were such beautiful tins myself), and instead of just giving patrons a “number” to put on their table for servers to locate them when their food is sent from the kitchen, Sweet Butter hands customers a spice, or an herb, or a vegetable. They’ve just thought of everything here down to the very last detail!

If you haven’t yet been to Sweet Butter and experienced the level of unmatched customer service, friendly neighborhood vibe and incredible edible offerings, it’s definitely time to do so. You’ll be happy that you did. And maybe you’ll leave with a little something special for yourself or for someone else from the Sweet Butter market!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Professionally designed by artistic consultant, Carrie Vose, Sweet Butter has the essence of the perfect neighborhood bakery, eatery and marketplace. Calming yellows, rich chocolate brown highlights and intricate wrought iron and other details enhance the already near-perfect establishment. Charming and fun, you won’t be disappointed with what you find here.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Simply exceptional! Our group hasn’t has a meal we haven’t liked since our first time at this establishment. We don’t know how they do it! • PRICE / VALUE: Incredible ambiance, terrific friendly neighborhood vibe and amazing gourmet cuisine at this quaint cozy establishment. Very happy to be a regular here!
  • CORKAGE: NO CORKAGE CHARGE at Sweet Butter any time of day! We were so delighted to find this out! Bring your wine from home or your wine locker and Sweet Butter will welcome your libations either inside their courtyard area or at any of their sidewalk tables!
  • TOTAL BILL: There’s nothing on the Sweet Butter menu over $13.95, and most of the entrees are well below that cost. The sandwiches and salads are large enough to share. I usually end up taking half of my sandwich or salad home with me. Great portions, loaded sandwiches and delicious iced tea with free refills!

BOA STEAKHOUSE… “Modern Steakhouse Excellence!”

During a recent visit to BOA on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, we indulged in their 5 – 7 PM weekday Happy Hour.  We arrived just after 5 PM, and the restaurant was already buzzing with excitement.

Upon entering this posh, upscale modernized steakhouse, we were filled with a sense of excitement and were instantly enveloped inside a world of visual complacency.

The red granite bar top coordinates nicely with the red-interiored wooden boxes clustered together above you on the ceiling…calming wood tones and calming hues abound throughout the interior lounge areas.

As welcoming as the indoor living room like lounge in front of the inside bar appeared, we just couldn’t resist sitting outside on the roofless patio lounge in front of a flickering fireplace…adorned with tall clear glass vases filled with underwater orchids.

The Happy Hour menu exhibits tasty libations to enjoy such as the BOA Infusion for $7, the Fleetwood Margarita for $8, their Luckman Martini at $9, Select Imported Beers for $6 each, Prosecco and Red Wine for $6 a glass, and White Wine for $5.  A lot of variety to suit a lot of tastes.

SNOOKIE’S COOKIES & MORE… “Original New Orleans Snoballs Have Come To Glendale!”

We hadn’t thought of dessert venues for our food and wine blog until my husband and I stumbled upon an ad in the L.A. Times with a giant photo of New Orleans snoballs on it.  My husband knows how much I love authentic snoballs, and we were both curious just how close they would be to the real thing.  We were both skeptical.  That is, until we arrived at Snookie’s Cookies & More in Glendale and tried the colorful icy treats.

I have a real adoration for snoballs.  They’re not snow cones, shaved ice or “slushies”.   They’re snoballs.  Completely different from the others entirely.  With a snoball, the ice packs distinctly and is the consistency of “soft fresh snow” rather than the coarse granular crunchy ice of snow cones or the watery texture of “slushies”.  The flavorings really do taste unique compared to other syrups, and there’s just a certain experience one gets when consuming a real snoball.  My husband and I try to get down to New Orleans twice a year for the terrific Blues and Jazz music, world-renowned Creole cuisine and southern hospitality.  When we do, we always make a point to do three specific things among everything else on our itinerary: have lunch at Commander’s Palace in the Garden District (their 25-cent unlimited martinis are a great way to enjoy a relaxing delicious meal!), relish in  powdered sugar-coated beignets at Cafe Du Monde on Decatur Street, and get brilliantly-colored flavorful snoballs!  Let me just start by saying that if we happen to miss a future planned trip to the Crescent City, there will be a little bit of New Orleans waiting for us at Snookie’s, because their snoballs are the real deal.

Take a look at the endless flavorings offered at their establishment below!

There is indeed an art to making authentic snoballs.  Snookie’s General Manager, and new Orleans native, Brigitte Tailet, insists that two main ingredients are required for such a feat: real New Orleans snoball flavorings, and a traditional New Orleans snoball machine.  Both, which she has personally retrieved from the Big Easy herself!  Brigitte believes the proper southern Louisiana chilling treat cannot be properly made any other way.  And guess what…we agree with her.  The photo below shows Brigitte’s devotion to keeping real southern snoball flavorings available at Snookie’s…and there are even more than are in this photo inside the Snookie’s kitchen!

Above, the two essential ingredients for making authentic New Orleans snoballs…a real snoball machine and flavorings straight from New Orleans! The finished products, coconut  cream and nectar snoballs ready to enjoy.  Pure snowy perfection!

Snookie’s Cookies started as a family business. Sold to new owners in 2007, the company now has a total of more than 27 years of success, and they’re still going strong.  The “secret” recipes were passed along from the originators, and the comapany is commonly known as the “Cookie Company to the Stars”, catering to the sweet tooth of the elite from Hollywood studio executives to celebrities alike.  In fact, Rick Dees gave Snookie’s Cookies a helping hand in spreading the world about their incredible cookies by mentioning their company on the air after these cookie masters sent him a box to try a year after being open for business!  (Thank you, Mr. Dees for spreading the word)!

As excited as I was about the new addition of New Orleans snoballs to the sweet treats menu at Snookie’s, we cannot go without telling you about all the other fantastic delec-tables Snookie’s Cookies offers.  From the original Snookie’s Cookies, like the white chocolate-chip and milk chocolate-chip versions above, to the oatmeal raisin and peanut butter baked confections below.  Light, crumbly and unlike any cookie we’ve ever had, these sweet delights are just right for any occasion!

Snookie’s Cookies also offers some of the most beautiful gift baskets around.  And if you can imagine it, they probably have it in terms of themes of baskets and what will go inside. Try some personalized cookies, give the unique gift of logo cookies, or select a container of photo cookies or even a photo cookie cake!  Have cookies, brownies, muffins and cakes delivered right to your office or home, or have them sent to someone special.  Balloons, Milk On Ice (what a clever idea!), fragrant milk baths, candles…the list is literally endless.  Take a look at the Snookies website link below to read about their story and see everything they have to offer.

You can’t miss Snookies Cookies.  The entire exterior of the establishment is a vibrant purple color, which continues inside from the purple and white checkered floors to the interior wall color.  It’s fun, sassy and definitely a place you should stop by to satisfy your sweet tooth or the sugar craving of loved ones.  Drive by on your way home from work if you want to, because Snookie’s Cookies is open until 8 PM EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK!  We’re talking serious cookie business here!  The devoted staff of Snookie’s is hard at work putting smiles on the faces of customers and a whole lot of love in their products for others to enjoy.

Above, Snookie’s Cookie’s Snoball banner, one of a fleet of Snookie’s Cookies delivery vehicles and a photo of the inside of the establishment.

Be sure to stop in at Snookie’s Cookies & More on Victory Boulevard in Glendale, CA.  You’ll leave with a smile in your heart, a tamed sweet tooth, and that box of Snookie’s Cookies you leave with under you arm…well, you can figure out what to do with those when you get home!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Purple prevails at Snookie’s Cookies & More! Let this vibrantly-hued confection boutique cater to your every sugary whim! Great value for everything considering the “secret” recipes used and the authentic New Orleans snoballs!

CUCINA DELL’ ARTE ITALIAN RESTAURAUNT… “A Palm Beach Locals Favorite!”

On popular Royal Poinciana Way, you will find a cozy Italian eatery sitting along a line of venues along the street. Directly on a popular sidewalk where locals and visitors alike trek back and forth throughout the day, there’s no better place than Cucina Dell’ Arte to satisfy your craving for an early Breakfast, long lingering Lunch or romantic Dinner with someone special.  Our most recent trip to Palm Beach involved dinner at Cucina Dell’ Arte, and we are happy tpass along our glowing review of this fine neighborhood bistro commonly frequented by local celebrities and a normal site for the Palm Beach Power Lunch.

We arrived in the evening after dark. To our contentment, there wasn’t too much of a crowd or noise, so we settled in at one of the four patio tables lining the sidewalk.  The establishment is colorful and vibrant with chandeliers overhead and uniquely, a disco ball handing above the bar inside!  Framed Italian posters accentuate the neutral-toned walls, while an eclectic decor catches one’s eye every now and again.  The restaurant has a fun, exciting, yet sophisticated atmosphere we enjoyed.

Fresh bread was brought to our table with olive oil-basted roasted garlic for spreading onto the rolls. Delicious and creamy, the marinated garlic was an expert pairing.

Burrata With Tomatoes

We started with the Burrata With Tomatoes above. Fresh chilled Burrata cheese with thick slices of freshly-cut tomatoes, basil and a Tuscan olive oil.  What a terrific way to start a meal!  Below, we shared the Bistecca Maria Rossa, grilled skirt steak with tomato salsa, crumbled gorgonzola and potato hash…

Bistecca Maria Rossa

We couldn’t help but try their popular pizza while we were there also.  Below, we selected Cucina Dell’ Arte’s Margherita Pizza with mozzerella and fresh tomato and basil…

Margherita Pizza

I especially loved the floral touch the staff deliveres with these fresh Gerber Daisies that are placed in a bud vase on each table!

A great local spot to catch up with old friends, meet new ones and have a wonderful time while dining in a unique establishment!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Italian, eclectic, fun and colorful creative decor.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Freshly-prepared Italian favorites, flavorful preparation, vibrant presentation and a terrific selection of wines with a full bar inside.
  • LOCATION: Cucina Dell’ Arte is located at 257 Royal Poinciana Way in Palm Beach, FL 33480.
  • HOURS: The restaurant is open 365 days a year for Breakfast from 7-11 AM, Lunch from 11 AM – 5 PM, and for Dinner from 5 PM -3 AM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: We received incredible service and  quick prompt presentation of the items we ordered.
  • PRICE / VALUE: The value of the cuisine we enjoyed was right on the money.  Delicious sauces and marinades, fresh crisp Italian bread with roasted garlic, Tuscan olive oils and savory entrees and appetizers.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $35 per bottle
  • TOTAL BILL: Our final bill came to $76.42, which included two glasses of wine, the Burrata With Tomato appetizer, a Margherita Pizza and the Bistecca Maria Rossa, which we were happy to pay for the quality of the dishes we were served! Definitely worth the splurge!

THE RESTAURANT @ FOUR SEASONS RESORT PALM BEACH…”Upscale Elegance!”

On a business trip to Palm Beach, Florida, my husband and I decided to try out the hotel’s main restaurant, quite simply called The Restaurant. After a full day of meetings, my husband just wanted to relax and stay in-house. So we did. The Restaurant was an excellent choice. The atmosphere was relaxed, elegant and private despite the size of the beautifully-appointed expanse. The hostess gave us a gentle smile, welcoming us in, and showed us to a table next to a towering floor-to-ceiling arched window over-looking the outside patio where we requested to be seated for dinner.

We were not unfamiliar with Four Season’s dining reputation. Having had previously dined at the Four Seasons in Atlanta GA, Las Vegas NV and Scottsdale AZ, we were anticipating great things from this locale as well. We were not disappointed by any means.

If there’s one thing that has always stood out with me regarding the Four Seasons Resorts besides their excellent cuisine and strict attention to detail in serving their guests, it’s the fact that they’ve always possessed a seamlessly unflawed articulation in the art of crafting breathtaking arrangements of massive sprays of flowers. Below, in the restaurant entry, fresh changes of their main flower arrangement were changed out every other day. Beautiful sprays of these colorful flora abound around the property in the lobby, guest suites, dining facilities and ballrooms enhancing an already meticulously stunning environment.

The ambiance of The Restaurant is beachy with an elegant connotation focused on creating a comforting inviting environment for their hungry sojourners. The chef’s skilled presentations and preparations of the cuisines offered ranged from traditional comfort foods to beautifully executed fresh seafood fare enhanced with an artistic flair not only to stimulate the palate, but also the visual and olfactory observance of the restaurant’s diners.

Well-dressed poised servers arrived promptly at out table side, greeting us and providing menus of the evenings edible selections freshly prepared by Chef Darryl Moiles. Known for The Restaurant’s American delicacies and seafood delights, we were not surprised by the quality, presentation and preparation that went into each of the dishes we ordered.

Above, we enjoyed a crisp glass of Chardonnay and a freshly-mixed Mojito before ordering. Below, a bread and cracker basket was presented to us with two distinct buttery hummus spreads.

The Tomato Basil soup below was flavorful and not too filling that we didn’t have room left for our entrees. Large enough to share between two people, this was a perfect starter.

Tomato Basil Soup

Braised Beef Brisket

Above, my husband and I debated over who was going to get what betwen the Braised Beef Brisket entree and the Soft Shell Crab dish below. We wound up getting them both and sharing them with one another.

Soft Shell Crab Entree

On our second of three nights at the hotel,we opted to leave the property and venture into the city for dinner, but our third and final evening there, we returned to The Restaurant in the hotel once again for dinner…

Burger “Beef” Sandwich

We chose their Burger Beef sandwich on an onion roll with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato and a savory tomato-based Aioli with fries, and the below Penne Pasta Bolognese on our second visit to the restaurant during our stay.

Penne Pasta Bolognese

What meal is complete without a sweet ending? A couple of cups of coffee and a trio of ice creams (pistachio, mango and Dulce de Leche) with fresh seasonal fruit was the perfect conclusion to two perfect dinners!

Ice Cream & Fresh Seasonal Berries

I loved that the waiters place your leftovers on nearby stools made especially for that purpose beside you at the table!

Our trip was complimented by two fantastic dining experiences at The Restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach. We highly suggest visiting this establishment so you too can experience the excellent creativeness in the kitchen of Chef Darryl Moiles and his culinary team.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Elegant beachfront location beautified by coffered ceilings, tall columns along the restaurant walls, and cool tones welcome you in as you arrive for your evening feast.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Exceptional fare, visually stimulating presentation and savory memorable flavors are combined together for an amazing culinary experience.
  • LOCATION: The Restaurant is located at the Four Seasons Resort at 2800 South Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach FL, 33480
  • HOURS: The Restaurant is available for dining every day between 5:30 PM and 10 PM. The restaurant bar is also open daily between 4:30 PM and 11 PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Impeccable service, courteous hostesses and an all-around terrific feeling of appreciation.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Well worth the splurge, well worth the trip and well worth the experience!
  • CORKAGE FEE: $25 per bottle
  • PARKING: We were staying in the hotel for a few days, so the hotel valet had possession of our vehicle, but if you are stopping in for dinner at the hotel, valet will be happy to take care of your vehicle for you while you dine.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our total bill per night (including tax), averaged between about $112 and $76. That included items such as Mojitos, Chardonay, Pellegrino, coffee, dessert, soup, and four main entrees. However, one person could easily dine here for under $50 including tax) if wanted.

PALOMINO RESTAURANT & BAR… “Happy Hour All Day, Every Day!”

In the ten thousand block of Wilshire Boulevard in the Westwood area of Los Angeles, there’s a local restaurant and lounge called Palomino.  Known for it’s hardwood-fired Mediterranean cuisine and creative culinary menu, Palomino also offers a refreshing Happy Hour.  All day, every day in the immense lounge Monday through Friday from 11AM to Midnight, then Saturday and Sunday from 4PM into the late evening hours, a menu of unique and appetizing items are presented for your dining and sipping pleasure. We stopped in recently, curious what Palomino might have to offer in this terrific section of the city.  For a Sunday afternoon, it turned out to be the perfect place to enjoy an invigorating cocktail and a few of the delicious appetizers offered on their Happy Hour menu.

The bar in the lounge is massive. Certainly a great place to meet new friends and gather with others for special occassions and still have the spaciousness needed to have a great time without feeling overly crowded. We arrived around 6:30 PM, and the lounge wasn’t packed at all.  In fact, we quite enjoyed the this time of day there because even with eight tables occupied in the bar, we still felt as though we were the only ones there. We could hear each other talking and could carry on a conversation without screaming at the top of our lungs, which was appreciated.  The soft comfortable burgundy leather chairs offer somewhat of a steakhouse booth feel the instant you are seated.  Displayed art on the lounge walls is an eye-catching exhibition and a colorful contrast to the beautiful deep-colored wood and elongated marble bar complimented by a light colored polished floor.

Our server, Jeffrey, was incredibly attentive and adept.  He made suggestions from the ongoing Happy Hour items that proved to be flavorful as well as appealing to the eye.

Cranberry Mojito

My husband tried Palomino’s Cranberry Mojito above.  It was crisp, refreshing, loaded with fresh mint leaves and had a cranberry essence that wasn’t too overpowering.  Incredible and a fairly large portion served in a tall glass.

Pomegranate Margarita

Above, I chose the Pomegranate Margarita.  Not too sweet.  Not too tart.  Just perfectly mixed by hand at the bar and garnished with a simple salted rim.

We wanted to try one of the Happy Hour wines as well.  Since we are predominantly red wine aficionados, we chose the above Cabernet on the list, which our bartender graciously poured a sample of to try before having a full glass.  It wasn’t bad considering it wasn’t what we’re used to drinking, but when we asked what Palomino’s corkage fee is for future reference, we were told $13 in the lounge or the restaurant!  We’ll keep that in mind for next time!

On the Happy Hour appetizer front, we chose three items we thought we would enjoy: the Italian Sausage & Mushroom Pizza, the Grilled Mushroom Salad and we couldn’t resist the sound of the Mushroom & Cheese Risotto Croquettes! There seemed to be a mushroom theme going on since everything we ordered was made with the delightful and healthy fungi…

Italian Sausage & Mushroom Pizza

The Italian Sausage wasn’t too spicy, but it had the perfect amount of flavor.  Above, the thin crunchy crust was enjoyed by us both, while the zesty sauce and freshly-sliced mushrooms blended with cheese and fresh parsley on top completed the dish nicely.

Grilled Mushroom Salad

Above, the Grilled Mushroom Salad was a real treat.  Loaded with thickly-sliced mushrooms and crumbled Gorgonzola cheese, the salad is then tossed in a delicious house vinaigrette and topped with walnuts over a pile of arugula.  We weren’t sure it would be large enough for the two of us to share, but it was.  And incredibly tasty!

Mushroom & Cheese Risotto Croquettes

Finally, the Mushroom and Cheese Risotto Croquettes arrived!  This dish arrives with two sauces for sipping.  The first from the left above, a creamy delectable mixture and not spicy, while the other on the right, a marinara-style solution with a zesty flavor.  Both terrific with these crispy-on-the-outside, yet creamy-and-bursting-with-flavor-on-the-inside croquettes.  Filled with perfectly-cooked risotto, gooey cheese and fresh mushrooms, this is a fried delight that you dare not miss out on! Below, we cut one of the croquettes in half to show you just how amazing the fillings of cheese, mushroom and risotto appear…

Overall, our experience at Palomino was satisfactory.  We can see ourselves returning soon, and maybe even bringing along some friends to enjoy the Happy Hour there!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Palomino’s Lounge is highlighted by it’s massive, rounded marble-topped dark wood bar, colorful artwork, comfortable leather chairs at low-top tables and an excellent view out of any of the huge wall windows in the cocktail lounge.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Freshly-prepared selections that are tasty and creatively presented.
  • LOCATION: Palomino is located in Westwood at 10877 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles CA 90024.
  • HOURS: Palomino Westwood is open for Lunch Monday through Friday from 11AM to 4PM, for Dinner from Sunday through Thursday from 5PM to 10PM then on Friday and Saturday from 5PM to 11PM, and the Bar Area is available Monday through Friday from 11AM to Midnight and Saturday and Sunday from 4PM to 11PM.  Happy Hour is presented all day, every day in the bar.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Our waiter and bartender, Jeffrey, was very professional, was happy to make suggestions and answer questions and was genuinely pleasant.
  • PRICE / VALUE: For what we ordered, and the quality of the drinks and bites we enjoyed, we felt satisfied that we got a decent value for the money.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $13 per bottle in the lounge or in the restaurant.

ANDERSEN’S DANISH BAKERY & RESTAURANT… “The Perfect Spot For Dinner After a Day of Wine Tasting In Santa Ynez!”

Amidst the seaside community of Santa Barbara runs the major vein and heartbeat of the city…State Street. Seemingly continuing on forever, one can get lost in the varied array of shops, restaurants, and other venues to choose from. Among that vast selection lies Andersen’s Restaurant & Bakery, a family owned and operated eatery that boasts fresh European cuisine and an in-house Danish bakery. Originally established in Copenhagen in 1953, then in the Santa Barbara location in 1976, Andersen’s has been catering to the culinary cravings of their patrons for more than forty years in total. With their exquisite dishes and in-house bakery, it’s no wonder so many flock to this restaurant for Breakfast, Lunch, High and Low Tea, Happy Hour, Dinner and special occasions and events.  After a day of wine tasting in Santa Ynez, it was the locale my husband and I chose for dinner before our drive back home.

With dining areas both inside the restaurant and outside under their covered patio with excellent views of State Street and passers-by, we elected to choose the out-of-doors option, as it was a beautiful sunny day with a pleasant breeze from the ocean gently embracing the town.

Originally there for a relaxing dinner, we were informed that Andersen’s also hosts a Happy Hour.  From 3 PM – 7 PM every day, you can enjoy select wines for just $6. And guess what else?  With every glass of Happy Hour wine ordered, Andersen’s will give you a free crostini!

A crunchy toasted baguette piled high with fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic and ricotta cheese. What a nice bonus to the evening!

We were greeted by a cheerful kind waitress who was very knowledgeable about the menu and the establishment. Our inquiries were answered with ease and confidence.  Black leather bound menus were then presented to us, and we were allowed a few minutes to peruse the many appetizing opportunities.

Another staff member stopped by our table with a freshly-baked basket of what tasted like a tender challah bread and butter in a small round ramekin.  Another immediately followed with two glasses of iced water for the table.  A few minutes later, as promised, our waitress returned smiling and took our order…

Smoked Salmon Appetizer

We started our dinner experience with the Smoked Salmon appetizer above.  Chilled, tender smoked salmon joined by Havarti cheese, dill sauce, capers and onions served on a crusted flavorsome bread.

Andersen’s Sole Almondine

My husband chose Andersen’s Sole Almondine above for his entree. Local sole lightly breaded and pan sauteed in butter, fresh herbed vegetables and a creamy remoulade sauce. Below, I decided on the Salmon Wellington, which consisted of a filet of fresh salmon in Andersen’s flaky puff pastry accompanied by cilantro-infused vegetables, herb-encrusted potatoes and a lemon buerre blanc.  Both simply divine!

Salmon Wellington

Though we did not have any room for something sweet after dinner, I did snap a photo of the dessert selections that our waitress brought by…

Andersen’s recently underwent an addition to their already popular Santa Barbara location. Their new LisseLotte Room serves as a favorite for locals and travelers alike to celebrate special events such as private parites, and family gatherings that can accommodate up to 100 guests. Reservations are requested, however, so if you decide to take advantage of this beautiful space for your next gathering, please call Andersen’s at (805)962-5085 to book your special event. In addition to reserving this special room for your celebrations and get-togethers, Andersen’s also presents their Music & Prix Fixe menu inside the addition. The Chef’s selective preparations combined with soothing Jazz and Bosonova tunes for one low price will enlighten your mood and have you waiting to return!  Please contact the restaurant for their updated performance schedule.

Before you leave Andersen’s, make a point to walk through to their in-house bakery below. Quaint and inviting with a large array of Dutch pastries and other goodies, you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy.

After my husband and I left Andersen’s, we headed back to West Los Angeles before dark, but not before making a stop at the Santa Monica beach near Stearns Wharf.  We parked the car, took our shoes off and took a walk hand-in-hand to the sandy beach and just sat for about a half hour watching a paddle boarder swoosh past and the sailboats anchored in the distance nod in the gentle ocean movement of the Pacific Ocean. The perfect end of the day with the perfect company and the sound and peacefulness of the voice of the ocean crashing onto a quiet shore…a terrific place to share an Andersen’s pastry with someone you love!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: The establishment in general is cozy, romantic, has easy access to the in-house bakery and is a perfect setting for a peaceful dining engagement either in or out-of-doors.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Culinary excellence joined by a terrific cocktail selection, enhanced by a great Happy Hour!
  • LOCATION: Andersen’s is located at 1106 State Street in Santa Barbara, CA 93101.
  • HOURS: Monday through Sunday from 8AM to 9PM. Breakfast starts daily at 8AM, Dinner begins at 5PM, High Tea is available with a reservation between 2PM and 5PM, while Low Tea is offered daily anytime in a plate version with a unique menu unlike high Tea, which is served on a tiered platter that easily serves two or more individuals.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Excellent attentiveness, courteousness and efficiency.
  • PRICE / VALUE: For the money, Andersen’s provides culinary splendor served by caring staff in a beautiful cafe-style environment definitely worth revisiting.
  • CORKAGE FEE: Andersen’s corkage fee is $20 per bottle.
  • PARKING: The best parking option we recommend is parking in one of the public parking garages for a minimal fee, then walking along State Street to the restaurant.  There’s a lot to see and you can also get some shopping done along the way!
  • TOTAL BILL:  Our total bill for two glasses of Happy Hour wine, two free crostinis, one order of the Smoked Salmon appetizer, the Sole Almondine and the Salmon Wellington came to $70.90, but the splurge was absolutely worth the additional money!  We’ll look forward returning to try some of their other favorites on the menu soon!

HOUSE OF CHAN DARA SIAMESE KITCHEN… “How Did We Ever Miss This?”

As many times as we have frequented the char-ming Larchmont Boulevard in mid-city Los Angeles, we’ve never stopped in at Chan Dara restaurant. It’s sits modestly on the north side of the boulevard, and expels a modest ivy-covered exterior, cleverly blending into the quaintness of the entire area. We were introduced to Chan Dara by a friend who suggested we meet him for their daily Happy Hour, as he had been several times before and was extremely pleased with what he discovered. (Thanks for the recommendation, Gene!) We did just that and soon realized what he had been raving about. We also couldn’t figure out how we ever missed this great eatery!

Chan Dara’s Happy Hour is offered Monday through Friday from 5-7PM, while on Saturdays and Sundays it lasts from 5-6 PM, specifically in the bar area. You can elect to take a seat at the bar, or one of several cozy corner seating areas or seats along the windows with colorful cushions. Simple and unobtrusive, the bar conveys elements of ease and a very casual ambiance.

Just outside large windows, you’ll see the Chan Dara patio complete with flowing fountains, umbrellas shielding their tables and visitors from the sun, and in the evenings when darkness prevails, romantic lighting for an intimate dinner. Concealed from the sidewalk by an ivy-cloaked sur-rounding wall, the patio is a great place for non-Happy Hour dining.

Chan Dara’s Happy Hour menu offers outrageous bargains on their already low-priced appetizers and cocktails. Try 50% off everything on their Happy Hour menu…drinks AND appetizers! Though not a full bar like it’s sister restaurant on West Pico Boulevard, the Larchmont Boulevard Chan Dara offers…wait for it….TWENTY-THREE COCKTAILS utilizing the popular Soju substitute. In addition to those concoctions, there are TWENTY-TWO beer selections, five wine choices and sake.

A few of those Soju-laden martinis include the following: (Clockwise from top left) the Lychee Martini, the Raspberry Martini, the Mango Martini and the Raspberry Lemondrop Martini.

But the cocktails at Chan Dara are only half of the fun at this quaint neighborhood venue. A list of delightful freshly-prepared appetizers will delight your senses and amaze your visual perception with the presentation alone! Below are some of the incredibly delicious items at 50% off the already low Happy Hour menu that we have tried:

The Saigon Spring Rolls (above) wrapped in delicate chilled rice sheets are filled with glass noodles, bean sprouts, scallions and fresh large shrimp. Served with Chan Dara’s sweet and sour tamarind sauce, it was the perfect starter. Below, the Mixed Green Salad is a great simple salad bursting with flavor. A peanut dressing, pictured here, or an option of a sesame vinaigrette can be ordered with this dish. We favor the peanut dressing!

The Beef Tenderloin Satay (sold in four or six skewers) are amazing. Marinated and grilled on wooden skewers, the tender flavorful beef is complimented with peanut sauce and a sweet cucumber salsa (above). Below, thinly sliced calamari is sauteed in a garlic wine sauce and masako is a unique treat. If the sauce alone was offered as a broth selection on the menu, I would order it every time we visit it’s so savory!

The Chicken Satay is also marinated on wooden skewers (above), and is served with peanut sauce and a cucumber salsa like the Beef Tenderloin Satay. Tender and mouthwatering, the Chicken Satay is another wonderful offering on the menu. Below, the Nam, lean ground pork seasoned with chili, lime juice, cilantro, onion, ginger and cashew nuts is a conglo-meration of deliciousness in one dish! I loved how the fresh cilantro and fresh lime on top enhanced the essence of the entire dish.

INSIDER’S TIP: The Nam is prepared “spicy”, however, you may request it to be cooked “mild” or “non-spicy”. We chose “mild”, and it was still too spicy for us both! (However, I did take the rest of it home with me, and finished it later in the evening despite the heat!)

Chan Dara on Larchmont is a new favorite of ours for great Thai cuisine. The establishment is simple, cozy and casual, while the portions are large and presentations of their cuisine are a sight to behold.

PARKING: Valet parking is available at the front of the restaurant, but we usually just park along Larchmont’s many metered street parking spaces under one of the shady trees.

TOTAL BILL: One visit to Chan Dara, we ordered the Saigon Spring Rolls (normally $8.50), the 6-piece Beef Tenderloin Satay (normally $13.50), a Mixed Green Salad (on the regular menu for $4.95), and we lost track of the martinis and wine we all had because we were entertaining. That bill totaled right under $60, which would have normally been a $120 bill, but everything was 50% off! HOWEVER…recently, my husband and I went back during Happy Hour and had the 4-piece Chicken Satay, the Calamari Chardonnay, the Nam and three cocktails bringing that total to $28.22 (including tax)! For the value of what we got, the filling portions and the rock-bottom pricing during Happy Hour for the quality of the items offered, Chan Dara Larchmont lands as one of SavorHour.com’s top recommendations for Happy Hour!

GEOFFREY’S… “A Malibu Tradition Not to Be Missed!”

Not many restaurants possess the right to claim that they present unparalleled cuisine, impeccable service AND a perfect location. However, Geoffrey’s in sunny Malibu, California certainly owns that right. The views alone from the open air al fresco patio overlooking the sparkling azure waters of the Pacific Ocean are enough to cause momentary euphoria. Truly one of Malibu’s favorite locales to satisfy even the most discriminative gastronomes, Geoffrey’s takes the lead for lavish dining, relaxing views and consistent exceptional service.

My husband and I and some out-of-town friends were enjoying the beautiful weather handed to us on a perfectly clear sunny afternoon. As we drove along scenic PCH, we pulled into Geoffrey’s, unbenounced to our company. To start, cocktails fit the mood of the day with seagulls singing their happy melody along the clifftops, pelicans diving for their sustenance for the afternoon in the distance, and waves crashing against the shore below.

The feel of Geoffrey’s is very person-able and welcoming. Round strategically-placed tables cover the patio sheltered by tall beige umbrellas.  Comfortable rattan chairs surround each table while a flowing fountain and reflective mirrors enhance the environment. Refreshing ocean breezes sneak in and out of the open dining expanse in complimentary rhythm with the tide below as you sip on a cocktail before enjoying an amazing meal, and all in the world seems right…even if just for a few moments in time.

Geoffrey’s offers a varied multitude of cuisine options to choose from.  Their Brunch menu presents such selections as Ahi Tuna Tartare, Baked Brie, Steamed Maine Mussels, an Artisan Cheese Plate, Crab Cakes, Specialty soups, salads and Seasonal Oysters to start your meal off right. Brunch entree choices include such fare as the Mediterranean, grilled Ahi Nicoise and Maine Lobster salads, complimented by a select array of Benedicts such as the Scotch, Crab Cake and Lobster Cake variations.  Non-salad entrees include the likes of French Toast and Quiche dishes, salmon and scallop selections and Seafood Paella, Grilled Filet Mignon, and Sea Bass and Chicken Picatta offerings leaving something for everyone’s taste, desire and cravings to be delighted and satisfied at this fine food establishment.

The cocktails we had were refreshing and crisp. Below, we indulged in Geoffrey’s Pear Martini (Absolut Pear Vodka,Triple Sec and a Bartlett pear puree), the Geoffrey’s Famous Bloody Mary (Absolut Pepper Vodka mixed with their Unique Bloody Mary Mix), the Kiss On the Beach (Absolut Vodka, Peach Schnapps, splash pf pineapple, orange and cranberry juice)…

…we also enjoyed an Antioxidant Mojito (Veev Acai Spirit, fresh mint leaves, fresh blueberries and a splash of soda), and a flavorsome glass of Pinot Noir (below)…

We started with the Ahi Tuna Tartare. An eye-catching presentation, vibrant sauces and crunchy wonton triangles. This appetizer served its purpose and was soon devoured by the four of us. The ahi is gently mixed with avocado, scallions, ginger, and red onions, then topped with tobieko caviar. This tartar dish lands on the Savor Hour list as a second #1 right beside another restaurant’s rendition in Newport Beach that we commonly frequent. Two #1 tuna tartar dishes, you ask? Yes…they’re both just that incredible.

Ahi Tuna Tartare

The Kobe Burger is one not to miss. Tender Kobe beef, horseradish cheddar cheese, smoked bacon, a roasted shallot Aioli and a tasty bun create the perfect union of flavors. Geoffrey’s Spicy Shrimp Salad with tamarind-marinated grilled shrimp, baby arugula, grilled corn and jicama are nicely complimented with a spicy Asian vinaigrette (both below).

Kobe Burger and the Spicy Shrimp Salad

Scotch Benedict

The Scotch Benedict (toasted croissant, smoked salmon, rosemary potatoes, hollandaise sauce with a fresh fruit side) offered aromatic joy when it was brought to our table. The Grilled Filet Mignon with fresh vegetables (below) was tender and perfectly prepared.

Grilled Filet Mignon with Fresh Vegetables

Shiitake Omelet

Above, one of our guests enjoyed the Shiitake Omlette (Shiitake mushrooms, garlic, shallots, tomatoes, and Brie cheese with roasted potatoes and fresh fruit), while I delighted in one of my favorite dishes: the Seafood Paella (prawns, mussels, Manila clams, scallops, chorizo, chicken and saffron rice in a heavenly seafood broth) shown below.

Seafood Paella

Brunch at Geoffrey’s has become a Malibu tradition not to be missed. You will leave with a sense of tranquility in your mind, with a peacefullness you hadn’t arrived with and a gastronomical experience to rival any oceanfront venue on PCH!

  • DECOR / ESTABLISHMENT: Hands down, one of the best views for Brunch anywhere along PCH. A tiny bit of luck with the weather and a fog-free day and you’ve got the perfect setting for a weekend Brunch!
  • FOOD / DRINK: Refreshing crisp cocktails, freshly-prepared fare and unique presentation of dishes come together to crate the perfect scenario for anyone’s culinary cravings.
  • LOCATION: Geoffrey’s is located at 27400 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, CA 90265.
  • HOURS: Lunch is available Monday through Friday from 11:30AM to 3:30PM, Dinner is served Sunday through Thursday from 4PM to 10PM then from 4PM to 11PM Fridays and Saturdays.  Brunch can be enjoyed Saturdays and Sundays from 10AM to 3:30PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Attentive waitstaff expects your next request almost magically at times as they exhibit unmatched service to every diner.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Value for the service, cuisine, initial presentation and views is quite obvious at Geoffrey’s.  It is perfect for Brunch, entertaining friends and out-of-town guests, and celebrating special occassions!
  • CORKAGE FEE: $25 per 750ml bottle (two bottle max)
  • PARKING: Valet parking is available for $6, which is added to your total bill.  You may also look for a parking spot on PCH in front of the restaurant, but it can be difficult to find as Geoffrey’s is an extremely popular establishment.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our final bill, which included the Kobe Burger, Shrimp Salad, Tuna Tartar, Grilled Filet Mignon, Scotch Benedict, Shiitake Mushroom Omlet, Seafood Paella, five cocktails, a large bottle of Pellegrino, and the valet charge automatically added to our bill and a corkage charge of $25 for a bottle of champagne we brought from our wine locker to cork there came in right under $300, but was well worth the splurge!

DOMINICK’S RESTAURANT & BAR… “It’s Crawfish Season!”

One of the great things about being in the South is the indulgence in the Louisiana crawish boil. One of the great things about being in southern Caifornia, is that every May for the last three years, Dominick’s own Executive Chef Brandon Boudet of New Orleans has been bringing the southern mud bugs to the west coast along with other delectable and savory southern dishes. Served alongside their already popular Brunch menu every Saturday in the month of May, Chef Boudet offers a special “CRAWFISH BOIL” menu which extends to its patrons such southern favorites as Boiled Crawfish By the Pound, a Roast Beef Po’Boy, Fresh Oysters On the Half Shell, and Snoballs among other traditional beloved specialties.

If you’re from the South, or have friends that are, you probably have had a chance to experience those little garnet-hued critters at one point or another called crawfish. In fact, there are several names for these creatures that resemble tiny lobsters, to which, in fact, they are related. You’ll hear northerners call them “crayfish”, the central and southwest regions like to call them “crawdads”, while further south you’ll hear the more common term “crawfish”. There are also many more without clarified geographic origin such as “crays”, “mud puppies”, “ecrevisse” (French), “yabbies”, “bugs” and even “grave diggers”. (Yikes)! Though the numerous titles for these smooth-textured, ruby-colored clawed crustaceans, the namesakes do, at times, tend to overlap geographically.

To make matters even more interesting, did you know that there are over 330 species of crawfish in southeast North America, over 100 classes of them in Australia and over 107 varieties of them in Europe? Mostly found in unpolluted bodies of water, these little critters seem to be everywhere! But we’ll focus on the ones Chef Boudet prepares at Dominick’s for the purpose of this blog. (I sometimes can get carried away with my research)!

Chef Brandon prepares around 300 pounds of crawfish on the Dominick’s patio each Saturday in May. Offered with corn, potatoes and amazing Cajun ingredients and spices, they don’t last long once they’re prepped to serve diners awaiting this meridional favorite. Along with the per-pound portions of crawfish for $10.99, the Roast beef Po’Boy for $8 is a delicious bargain. $12 gets you a half dozen fresh Oysters On the Half Shell, which are quite refreshing in the warm summer weather. In addition to these delectable bites, Chef boudet provides Maui Onion Rings for $12, and his crawfish Boil Artichoke with a Creole Remoulade. Don’t forget dessert, because there are Snoballs on the menu as well! At $3.25 per serving, you can indulge in coconut, blueberry, raspberry and chocolate flavors. For an additional $9, you can “kick it up a notch” by adding a shot of Old New Orleans Spiced Rum! Or you can go the brew route and have a cold Abita Amber Draft. Your choice. Have one or have them all. Your excuse is that it’s Crawfish Season at Dominick’s!

If you’ve never been to Dominick’s, we recommend the patio dining option. There are booths inside the collegiate-feeling bar area when you first walk in, so you can choose that as well, but the outdoor patio reserves a charm all its own. A red brick fireplace oversees clientele as servers care for their patrons’ requests. A chalk-written menu with the day’s specials sits atop the mantle tempting guests with daily offerings from the kitchen. The outdoor area allows for central table seating, tandem selections and larger settings are available upon request.

In true traditional Crawfish Boil form, tables were covered with sheets of newspaper, and rolls of white papertowels adorned each one for quick clean-ups…

We really loved the signature Hurricanes on the menu and the souvenier “Dominick’s Crawfish Boil 2012″ cups they were served in…

Time to eat! Below, what we enjoyed from Dominick’s ‘Crawfish Boil’ menu…

The plate of fresh oysters above was an appropriate and scrumptious starter…

The spring crawfish season typically lasts from March through June when they are the best for harvesting.  Above, these boiled crawfish with red potatoes and the perfect seasoning came out next…

The Roast Beef Po’Boy sandwhich was a hit…tender sliced roast beef, tomato, lettuce and an incredibly juicy flavorful au jus…

Coconut snoball (the shots of rum disappeared before I could snap a photo), sorry!

We enjoyed Dominick’s Crawfish Boil this year. If you didn’t get the chance to attend this year’s southern cuisined menu by Chef Boudet, make a note of it for next year as a “must do” for a Saturday in the month of May. We’ll see what happens next year on the patio!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: The photos of the restaurant above show the cozy, open air feel of the patio dining room at Dominick’s.  We really enjoyed the fresh air, the natural decor, and the entire feel of the space reminded us of a courtyard in Old New Orleans.
  • FOOD / DRINK: The offerings were freshly made, savory and flawlessly executed the flavor of Louisiana cuisine.
  • LOCATION:Dominick’s is situated at 8715 Beverly Boulevard in West Hollywood, CA 90048.
  • HOURS:Open at 6PM 7 days a week for dinner, and Saturday and Sunday from 10AM to 3PM for Brunch.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: The staff at Dominick’s was well-prepared, courteous and willing to accommodate most requests when approached.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Great value for the cost for Brunch at Dominick’s.  We weren’t disappointed by the prices on the menu.
  • CORKAGE FEE: Dominick’s corkage fee is $15, however, there is a full bar upon entering the restaurant.
  • PARKING: Valet parking is available behind the restaurant on North Sherbourne Drive as well as metered street parking.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our final bill for two pounds of boiled crawfish, two Po’Boy sandwiches, 1 order of raw oysters, two Hurricanes, one snoball and two shots of Old New Orleans Spiced Rum was about $77.99.  Over our SavorHour $50 (including tax) goal, but definitely worth splurging on!

CAFE LA BOHEME… “A Night at the Opera!”

It may not truly be an evening at the opera, but in essence, it is all one might expect at the Met in New York or the Music Center here in Los Angeles: intriguing ambiance, dramatic decor, unparalleled presentation, and an elegant performance. You can get that and more when you experience dining at the iconic Cafe La Boheme in West Hollywood. After 20 years of successful business, this grand establishment was completely remodeled in 2007 by famed restaurant designer, Margaret O’ Brien. The result?  Perfection to the eye and the initial overture for the incredible experience you will attain at this illustrious institution sitting elegantly on Santa Monica Boulevard.  General Manager, Thomas Lynam, executes a seamless operation of this fine establishment, while making sure everyone who enters the doors of La Boheme is happy and comfortable. Exquisite savory temptations made available by Executive Chef Christine Banto display her accomplished creativeness, which is revealed in her California-Mediterranean dishes that portray evidence of Asian influences.  The curtains have risen, and the manifestation of a performance not to be missed begins this opera of both visual and culinary excellence. You have arrived at Cafe La Boheme…

Through the main threshold of the restaurant, a stunning display of color and glamor ushers you into its dazzling existence. This eatery will not only have you seeing red (literally), but also deep hues of blacks, muted silvers, reflective mirrors and vibrant ornate crystal chandeliers lowered from a massive cathedral ceiling.  A most unexpected prelude to the dining experience, the decor is just the lead-in to Cafe La Boheme’s numerous unique and note-worthy attributes.

From the moment you enter this domicile, there is instant realization that you’ve entered someplace amazing.  The feel is somewhat theatrical and the sultry allure wraps you in an inviting comfort as a hostess greets you and escorts you to your table immediately. The elegant goth-esque embellishments and one-of-a-kind ornamentation in this dwelling will leave you breathless and anxiously awaiting the next act of this gastronomic experience. Well-dressed hardwood tables and black leather chairs and semi-private booths, both on the main dining floor and above on the balcony surrounding the dining activity, are both inviting and comfortable and ready to make you feel at home in this upscale, yet very welcoming and chic environment.

Two specific rare bronze sculptures stand haughtily between the lounge and the first floor dining area.  The first, a statue of a woman with multiple arms possessing obvious thoughts of life and love, displaying various objects in each hand while one holds the world on her shoulders.  The other, a spinning gyroscope mounted near the bar that you cannot miss.  Servers and attendants who walk past this immense conversation piece will stop briefly to whirl it’s massive orbs, sending the art round and round until it stops eventually for it’s next swift revolution. This act has become tradition since the building was erected more than twenty years ago, as these sculptures were once part of the original Cafe La Boheme before it’s 2007 renovation.

A well-dressed server arrives before you know it and begins his knowledgeable aria of the delectable options on the evening’s menu. The selections change seasonally. However, there have been a few popular items left for longer durations due to popular demand. Such palatable pleasures include starters like the Tuna Tataki the La Boheme Soup of the Day, the Chicken Liver Pate, and the Crispy Blue Crab Cake. There is a refreshing collection of salads to suit any preference, while the Pasts & Risotto options will leave you anxiously inquisitive. We’ve enjoyed the Japanese Pumpkin Ravioli on more than one occasion. With it’s candied pumpkin seeds and brown butter sage sauce, I was dumbfounded. (I literally may never have pumpkin ravioli anywhere else again after having it here)! Another favorite of ours if the Pappardelle Bolognese with shaved Parmigiano cheese. The perfect amount of sumptuous Bolognese sauce mixed into thin, perfectly al dente Pappardelle pasta ribbons is sure to make you smile with delight. Chef Banta’s risotto dishes are equally unparalleled in quality and flavor.  The Wild Mushroom Risotto with lemon confit, fresh herbs and Pecorino cheese is a richly-endowed treat, while the Farro Risotto offers creaminess heightened in essence by kale, fresh corn, oven roasted tomatoes and edamame.

Before your order is taken from one of several attentive and efficient waiters, (Kevin, Sterling and Hector won’t steer you wrong), fresh house-baked warm focaccia bread is placed before you accompanied by a ramekin of white bean puree dip. Who needs butter or olive oil with this superior spread? Try to get through your bread basket and vessel of this silky smooth topper without ordering more. We certainly never can!

Cafe La Boheme’s main dishes emit attention to detail in their presentation as well as a flavorsome disposition.  Chef Banta has no qualms about perfection in flavor or visual appeal when dispatching her cuisine out of the kitchen into the dining room to anxiously-awaiting patrons. A few of our favorite and most-loved dinner entrees consist of the Herb-Marinated Hanger Steak, the popular 6-Ounce Filet Mignon, the Seared Sea Scallops and the Miso Glazed Salmon, the Roasted Free Range Chicken Breast and the Grilled Berkshire Pork Chop with proportionate complimentary sides. Whichever items you select during your participation in dining at Cafe La Boheme, you’re guaranteed to do no wrong.  A symphony of polyphonic flavors will dance in your mouth while mingling with essences of Asian influences cleverly and ingenuitively engineered by Chef Banta herself.

Below, Cafe La Boheme’s Squash Ravioli with fresh sage and pumpkin seeds…

Squash Ravioli With Pumpkin Seeds & Sage Butter

Due to the change in season and availability of certain fresh ingredients, Chef Banta has recently replaced her very popular Japanese Pumpkin Ravioli in Brown Butter Sage Sauce with a Squash Ravioli in a lighter, less sugary flavored sage butter sauce.  (Oh, how we miss your Japanese Pumpkin Ravioli, Chef Banta!  Hopefully next fall, we’ll see it on the menu again, but we really enjoyed your new version for the warmer months as well)!

Did we mention that on Monday evenings, the corkage charge is only five dollars?  We didn’t? Shame on us!  Diners are welcome to bring in a bottle of their own wine to enjoy over dinner every Monday night.  It’s a courtesy well-accepted and appreciated by both the establishment’s first-time customers as well as their seasoned returning enthusiasts.

In terms of satisfying your sweet tooth, there are numerous sugary rewards to seduce you into sampling.  There’s Darcy’s Warm Valrhona Chocolate Cake, Butterscotch Pudding,  Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee, a selection of sorbets and ice Cream, and the Banana Bread Pudding. As you know, we’re not big dessert consumers, but on rare occasion, we have been known to indulge in one specific creation on the Cafe La Boheme dessert menu…the Banana Bread Pudding…

Banana Bread Pudding

Or the coconut and strawberry sorbet bursting with sweetness and flavor…

Coconut & Strawberry Sorbet

After dinner, we took the rest of our wine outside on the patio to enjoy the remainder of the evening and the close of the lightened sky above. Also available for dining when specified in your reservation, the intimate outdoor patio is graced with intrigue and charm.  As the legato tempo of our dinner service completed outside, we were somewhat regretful to be at the conclusion of our incredible meal at this beloved institution.

A fire burned calmly in the outdoor fireplace, while the sweet bouquet of nearby blooming jasmine ocasionally drifted past our table. The combination of that fragrance and the delicious nose of the Pinot Noir we were finalizing was a savory contrast.  Antiqued stained-glass hanging lanterns and wall sconces quietly ornament the space, while roses proudly pronounce them-selves against an ivy-curtained surround.  As the heavens grow darker, the mood is enhanced by the firelight, candles on the tables, and the peaceful quaint out-of-doors environment.  It was just what we needed after having finished our magnificent dinner from Chef Banta…the perfect coda to our evening.  Just sitting and talking and reminiscing about great times in our past and more incredible times coming soon in our future.  What could possibly be better than a fine glass of wine on that patio after indulging in delectable cuisine with the love of your life.  Not much.

Cafe La Boheme also prides itself on its Happy Hour. Mentioned as the “Hippest Happy Hour Around”, and presented daily from 5PM to 7:30PM, you can enjoy all “Fun Bites” and sandwiches at half off the regular price! You can choose from Fun Bites ranging in price from $7 to $15 such as Crispy Fried Calamari, Vegetable Spring Rolls, Spicy Buffalo Wings, Bacon Wrapped Dates, the Boheme Burger Sliders, Filet Mignon Tacos, the Steamed Mussels, Chicken Potstickers, Barbeque Chicken Quesadilla, Japanese Fried Chicken, Shoestring Fries, Four Cheese Mac & Cheese, and La Boheme’s Cheese Board.  But then there are also three great sandwhiches on board the Happy Hour menu also: the Boheme Burger (aged cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onions, leaf lettuce, and a horseradish mayo), the Seared Ahi Sandwhich (grilled onion, red pepper Aioli, and a Kalamata olive spread), and the Grilled Veggie Sandwhich (eggplant, zucchini, red onion, roasted pepper, feta cheese and pesto).

Ready for some pleasurable sipping on the La Boheme red velvet sofa or one of numerous cozy bistro tables in the lounge?  Try quenching your thirst with one of these indulgent libations: Select Draft Beers, House Wines and Well Drinks ($5 each), Martinis and Margaritas ($7), or the La Boheme Cocktail of the Day ($8). Ask your server or bartender what the daily brew behind the bar is and you’ll be happy you inquired!  If you have the pleasure of dining on the upstairs balcony, you will notice that servers use the hand-cranked dumbwaiter (left) to send your drink orders up from the main bar.  They pick them up once they return on the second level and deliver them promptly to your table.  An intriguing and fun conversation piece!

On our visit to Cafe La Boheme’s Happy Hour, we tried their Cocktail of the Day, which was a Soju Cosmo.  Made with Soju, a distilled beverage native to Korea, it’s taste is comparable to vodka, though usually sweeter due to its manufacturing process.  Delicious and satisfying, this cocktail was just what the doctor ordered! My husband also had a Rum and Coke while I decide to have a traditional Greyhound with lime.  (I usually don’t drink those unless we’re enjoying oysters on the half shell, but I figured I’d try one anyway)!  It was refreshing, perfectly crisp and just as I would have expected it to be…

Above, we enjoyed an Apple Martini, Rum and Coke, Soju Cosmo and a refreshing Greyhound during Happy Hour.

We also relished in the Filet Mignon Tacos, the Bacon Wrapped Dates and shared one of the Boheme Burgers.  You’ll see the sumptuous proof is in the pictures below:

While most people who visit the lounge in Cafe La Boheme don’t notice them, there in fact ARE two televisions!  Mounted on the wall directly above the main bar are two large in-mirror plasma screens.  They’re easy to miss, simply because you just don’t look up in this garnet-colored fantasy with so much else to catch your eye.  But they’re there.  Existing quietly amongst the comings and goings of diners and Happy Hour enthusiasts alike.

Cafe La Boheme is indeed an icon of the community.  Known as such, and certainly proving their place in the fine dining society, it more than stands out from the crowd. It emcompasses the essence of visual enlightenment, culinary excellence and posesses an allure unlike anything else.

  • DECOR / ESTABLISHMENT: Brilliant ruby hues, deep blacks and muted silvers exude charm and elegance in this upscale-casual dining venue.  Something to catch your eye everywhere you look.  Romantic ambiance in an intimate, unique and spacious setting.

Casey, our server during Happy Hour with Brett behind the bar were also very cordial and helpful with recommendations.
  • PRICE / VALUE: No worries at Cafe La Boheme. Whether at Happy Hour or dining in the restaurant, you will receive excellent cuisine for an excellent price.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $5 corkage charge per bottle Monday nights with dinner, then other nights at dinner, $20 per bottle.
