BOSCOS RESTAURANT & BREWING COMPANY… “Little Rock’s River Front Dining Locale!”

Serving patrons at locations in Memphis, Nashville, and Franklin in Tennessee, and also in Little Rock, Arkansas in the downtown’s River Market district, Boscos has become known for its consistent production of tasty casual cuisine, and house-brewed ales. Our readers know that we’re not beer connoisseurs, but we understand that those who do try one of the many beer variations here will not be disappointed. Boscos has been brewing award-winning handcrafted beers for more than 16 years. Just last year in 2012, the restaurant and microbrewery took home the gold medal at The 2012 World Beer Cup for their Hefewizon brew, as well as the silver medal for their popular Isle Of Skye Scottish Ale the same year. But the microbrewery isn’t the only thing that is drawing crowds. Their casual relaxed atmosphere also welcomes patrons in along with a brick-oven list of tempting edibles.

Bosco's6

Boscos hosts a pretty popular Happy Hour weekdays from Monday through Friday between 3:30 PM and 6:30 PM. Specials feature $5 appetizers, $5 wines, beers, and cocktails from a select menu, and handcrafted Boscos brews for only $3.50 each! Sounds fairly reasonable to us. The restaurant also presents a fantastic brunch Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM to 3 PM, which offers delectable waffles, savory Benedict dishes, creative omelets, and much more to feast your eyes, and your appetite on. Additionally, Boscos provides half off specially selected wine each Wednesday, while on Mondays and Saturdays all day long, patrons can get their fill of specialty mugs of beer for only $3 each!

Above, we perused the lunch menu on a lazy Thursday afternoon. The lunch crowd had long since died down, and we almost had the entire riverfront patio to ourselves by the time we finished our meals. Refreshing beverages were served to us promptly, while a couple of glasses of wine relaxed us as we took in the scenic views all around us.

Bosco's2

What a patio! And quite a view from the outdoor dining deck at Boscos! Expansive sights of the Riverfront Pavilion and the mighty Arkansas River fill one’s visual perception, while refreshing fresh breezes visit every now and again on the waterfront patio. Such a beautiful place for a casual, delicious meal with family, friends, or even by yourself if the day allows for that.

Bosco's3Fried Chicken Salad

Atop Mesclun greens and accompanied by tomatoes, crispy bacon, and chopped egg, these perfectly-fried strips of chicken stand out with their tender and juicy flavor in every bite. Served with a savory honey-mustard dressing, we thought this dish was full of flavor, possessed a lovely crunch from the fried chicken, and encompassed healthy vegetables as well. Filling and satisfying, this was a perfect item to order while focusing on the lighter side of dining, but never lacked the sensational tastes I was craving.

Bosco's4

Asian Grilled Chicken Salad

The Asian Grilled Chicken Salad was presented with baby spinach, almonds, pickled ginger, red peppers and juicy marinated grilled chicken chunks mixed with a sweet and slightly tangy Asian vinaigrette dressing. Delicately-fried wontons were then piled atop this selection for an additional and delightful crunch and visual appeal.

Bosco's5Cesar Salad With Blackened Fish

I especially loved the Caesar Salad with blackened fish when we visited. Nicely prepared, and with a pronounced savoriness in every taste I took of it, this menu item was refreshing from the chilled salad, and warm and delicious from the tender flavorsome fish filet on top. The crunchy croutons on the salad amplified the satisfaction level for me, while the cool taste of the ranch dressing I ordered on the side was a nice compliment.

We really enjoyed our dining experience at Boscos. We shared several bites of different dishes recommended by our gracious server, and we were happy to have visited. If you’re in the Little Rock, Arkansas area, stop by Boscos in the River Market and give them a try. We think you will enjoy this restaurant and microbrewery just as much as we did.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: A beautiful expansive deck overlooking the Arkansas River was breathtaking and such a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a meal out of doors.

THE PALM RESTAURANT… “Lunch With Steak Burgers & Intriguing Caricatures!”

If you haven’t tried the ENORMOUS steak burgers at The Palm, then you’re missing an incredible opportunity to experience a phenomenal 12-ounce hand-fashioned USDA Prime Beef anomaly. The Palm in fashionable West Hollywood, California catered to our craving for an outrageously divine burger when we visited their establishment with another couple recently.

The very first The Palm was erected in New York City by decendants of the family that still owns the upscale chain today. Since 1926, this steakhouse (that didn’t originally serve steaks in the beginning) continued onward to blossom into a nationally loved gathering place for many. In the early days, the proprietors didn’t have a lot of capitol for decor. Coincidentally enough, that first restaurant in New York City was in close proximity to the King Features building, which is now the world’s premier distributor of comics and editorial cartoons among other artistic items. Back in the day, cartoonists would pay for their meals at The Palm by sketching original portraits of famous individuals on the restaurant walls. Evidently, this form of payment worked well to fill the undecorated eatery, while at the same time aided the artists in getting their work out in the open. That action spun into the evolvement of the numerous caricatures being placed on the walls of future The Palm restaurants, and is what you’ll see today when you step foot into one of these hospitable locations.

Celebrating their 85th anniversary in 2011, The Palm restaurant chain has a lot to be proud of. Decades of successful business and a strong reputation for being known for their high regard for their patrons happiness and satisfaction, this eatery is certainly one of the classics that has staying power not to dissipate anytime soon.

3.28

The Palm is known for their Steakburgers. And rightfully so. We have enjoyed these sensational juicy ground steak temptations on more than one occasion, and will do it again in the future. Below, we relished in a couple of The Palms more famous burgers…

The Bozzi Burger

Chosen in honor of and named after one of the original proprietors of the restaurant, Pio Bozzi, the Bozzi Burger ($16.90) encompasses everything crunchy, crispy, beefy, succulent, and incredible about The Palm’s steak burgers. Served with aged Gouda, BBQ sauce with a hint of smoky essence, and flavorsome fried onion strings, this gigantic vision of beefy perfection will satisfy every curiosity you ever had about these outrageously large sensations. Accompanying all the steak burgers at The Palm is lettuce, tomato, and onion. The Bozzi Burger also comes with a side of tangy BBQ sauce, which is a welcome  flavor addition to the salty fried onions, juicy Prime beef, and smoky cheese.

The Second Avenue Burger

The Second Avenue Burger ($16.90), names after the street in New York City where the original The Palm steakhouse exists, is another flavor experience we suggest. The Danish blue cheese and expertly smoked bacon allow for a heightened sense of flavors to culminate with the beefy goodness of the steak burger. The toasted sesame-sprinkled brioche buns are also a nice detail.

If you’re in the area, stop in at The Palm for Prime Time held from 5 Pm to 7 PM Sunday through Fridays and indulge in half off Prime Bites, beer, select wines by the glass, and premium spirits. Available in the bar area, the selections available will ease your taste for something savory for a reasonable price.

Prime Steak Burger Sliders & Mini Broiled Crab Cakes

We chose a couple of glasses each of a smooth Pinot Noir, and shared the Prime Steak Burger Sliders and Mini Broiled Crab Cakes. The steal burger sliders were covered in cheddar cheese that was perfectly melted and delicious with the beef, a pickle, and a pesto mayo, while the crab cakes provided a nice combination of flavors with the mango salsa, crisp cucumber slice and a zesty remoulade sauce. Each served three to an order, these tasty morsels catered to our something quick, delicious, and casual all while enjoying them inside the dark wood encompassed bar at The Palm.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Colorful caricatures flood the walls of this venue, while   a traditional steakhouse feel is projected with shiny brass details, leather booths, and well-kept woods throughout.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Sensational steak burgers, a savory wine selection, and enormous portions.
  • LOCATION: The Palm we visited is located at 9001 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, CA 90069.
  • HOURS: Lunch is presented Monday through Friday from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Dinner is served Monday through Thursday from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM, on Fridays from 3:00 PM -to 11:00 PM, Saturdays from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and also on Sundays from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The Palm’s version of happy hour, called ‘Prime Time’, exists Sunday through Friday from 5 PM to 7 PM offering discounts on bar bites, an select beer and wine.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Accommodating, personable, knowledgeable, and pleasant.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Fantastic quality at an acceptable price for what we enjoyed.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $30 per 750mL bottle.
  • PARKING: Metered street parking is available surrounding the establishment, as well a valet service for the restaurant.
  • PRICING: The Palm’s “Bozzi Burger” and “Second Avenue Burger” run about $16.90 per sandwich, while the appetizers during Prime Time in the lounge were priced between $11.90 to $12.90 per order with 50% off those and the glasses of Row 11 Vinas 3 Pinot Noir started out at $17.80 per six-ounce pour.

COAST RESTAURANT & BAR @ CANARY HOTEL… “American Cuisine With Panoramic Rooftop Views!”

THIS RESTAURANT HAS BEEN RENAMED “FINCH & FORK” AND CAN BE SEEN AT WWW.FINCKANDFORKRESTAURANT.COM.

Coast Restaurant & Bar is nestled inside the Canary Hotel in thriving downtown Santa Barbara, California. With comfortable seating and views of busy sidewalks from tables inside this eatery next to huge floor-to-ceiling windows, patrons can view passers-by and the beauty of downtown Santa Barbara. Serving American fare with west coast enhancements, Coast Restaurant & Bar caters to connoisseurs of fresh seafood, tender meats and crisp vibrant vegetables meticulously prepared and delivered straight from the local Farmer’s Market to your table.

Close to the California coast with its serene ocean and beach, nearby upscale shopping along popular State Street, and located within Santa Barbara’s quaint beach community, Coast Restaurant & Bar presents relaxing comfort, savory cuisine and an inviting environment perfect for enjoying any meal of the day.

Below, photos of an interior dining room, the main entry of the restaurant, intricate wood details throughout the space indoors, and the water service presented in a tall glass corked bottle before each meal.

Coast Restaurant & Bar provides a wide variety of succulent fare from fresh creative seafood presentations to tender cuts of beef to crisp vibrant salads and tempting dessert creations. Everything is made fresh with Farmer’s Market-purchased ingredients and that can be tasted in the final product that arrives from the kitchen. Dishes are prepared to your specifications and are delivered with pride and a smile from friendly servers. Our late lingering lunch was just what we were looking for to tame our rumbling stomachs after spending the morning shopping and visiting friends on State Street.

Specialty Iced Teas

Before ordering my glass of wine, I shared in a Signature Iced Tea with my husband before ordering. These were enhanced with fruit flavors, rosemary essence and herbs mixed throughout to create sensational-tasting iced teas that proved to be both flavorful as well as visually enchanting once we sipped from these colorful concoctions.

Coast Restaurant & Bar advanced some pretty astounding starters. From the ‘Finger Foods’ selection (from $4 to $7), you can chow down on Warm Marinated Olives, Honey Roasted Spiced Peanuts, Dungeness Deviled Eggs, or Truffle Fries With Mustard Aioli. The ‘Share’ portion of the menu suggests items that can be split (from $3 to $13) from the Classic Ceviche to the Market Fish Tacos to several other interesting dishes…

West Coast Oysters

We satisfied our hunger and graced our palates with the West Coast Oysters ($3/each). In fact, they were so inspiring that we ordered a second dozen before we had even finished the first one! A terrific starter to any meal, these oceanic wonderments were full of flavor and possessed a perfect creaminess to their texture. The accompaniments of sauces and a caper relish were excellent sidekicks to these amazing mollusks.

Roasted California Mussels

Another ‘Share’ menu item we couldn’t pass up was the Roasted Californian Mussels offering ($12). These succulent morsels were tossed in Coast’s tangy and sweet and hearty tomato sauce with fennel, saffron and creme fraiche, and definitely hit the spot. Served with grilled sliced bread sticks on top, this was a wonderful flavor experience.

In addition to Coast’s Artisan Flat Breads (ranging from $10 to $14), their ‘Garden” menu selections are also pretty incredible. From Ahi Tuna and Potato & Fennel Soup and fresh salad options, I chose the Skirt Steak Salad ($15) for my lunch entree.  This delectable mixed greens compilation included wild arugula, slices of sweet pear, contrasting blue cheese crumbles, candied walnuts and a smoked balsamic vinaigrette. Not to mention the tender, perfectly-grilled skirt steak slices piled onto the plate. Healthy and lean, this was a delightful lunch for me. The portion size was large, and the mixture of flavors between the sweetness of the fresh sliced pear and candied nuts with the tangy blue cheese and smoky dressing created a beautiful presentation.

Skirt Steak Salad

And now for the second entree that was ordered….

Lamb Burger

My husband enjoyed the Lamb Burger. A switch on the traditional beef burger, this creation was not only tasty, but presented with a sweet date compote, and an onion relish cilantro yogurt. (Um…can I just have a bowl of this yogurt condiment and a spoon, please?) The sauce was great, but everything together, including the tender bun this carefully ground lamb burger came with made my husband’s dining experience only that much better. The addition of the fries was a battle I quickly lost with my husband, so I forced myself to enjoy a few of the crispy, perfectly-cooked potato strips. A touch of light salt on these was welcomed, and the crunchy exterior and warm potato interior remained throughout the duration of the meal.

Interior of the Lamb Burger

By now, you would think we had no room left after the feast we enjoyed. But when our server stopped by with a dessert menu, we gave in to temptation and chose the Lemon Cheesecake ($8) to share. I must say, the caramel and chocolate sauce alongside this elongated rectangular slice of lemony creamy sin was perfectly sweet and balanced. The macadamia nuts that rained down atop this sugary confection added a brilliant crunch to this already magnificent end-of-the-meal treat. (And no…we didn’t finish our dessert!)

Lemon Cheesecake

Here’s a suggestion for all of you who choose to enjoy a meal at Coast…take a walk to the rooftop of the hotel before or after your meal and catch a glimpse of the panoramic mountain views of Santa Barbara. (Aren’t the above photos incredible!)  It’s called the Rooftop Perch, and once there, you’ll understand why it’s such a perfect name for this hideaway overlooking the area. My husband and I just peered out over the edge of the rooftop for what seemed like an eternity.

  • SERVICE / STAFF: Our server was lovely. She showed attentiveness, professionalism, friendliness and appreciation of our stopping in for lunch.
  • PRICE / VALUE: We felt the price was a tad high for lunch, but we thoroughly enjoyed the quality of what was ordered. Of course, the pricy glass of wine and the additional 18 oysters helped to raise the total bill as well.

SKULL CREEK BOATHOUSE… “History & Good Times Set Against A Waterfront Backdrop!”

Formerly the popular Boathouse II establishment on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Skull Creek Boathouse came into existence in 2009 when SERG Restaurant Group transformed it into one of the best seafood gathering spots on the waterfront. Previously part of the largest dry dock boat storage area on all of Hilton Head Island and after expansions and extensive renovations, Skull Creek Boathouse has now become what it is today. A lively, relaxing, fine establishment where locals and visiting tourists flock to for great times, a stunning water view over Skull Creek and the Intracoastal Waterway, and some of the most amazing fresh seafood, succulent steaks and vibrant sushi presentations around.

With its historical outdoor bar, Lowcountry style and intertwined protective oak trees hovering overhead, this establishment honors the South Carolina coast. Have a seat in one of the many adirondack chairs, watch the boats go by, and have a hand shaken cocktail while you’re at it. Perfect for a conversation with someone you love before or after a nice meal at Skull Creek Boathouse. Above, the logo compass on the entrance to the restaurant, the lunch menu, and the view of the front entrance to the eatery.

How about these views! A nautical feel with an upscale ambiance. Catch a glimpse of a dolphin jumping out of the water from the banks of Skull Creek, wave to boaters returning from a day’s adventure, or just take in the natural beauty all around you.

The indoor part of the restaurant features their popular Dive Bar, which offers fresh favorites like sushi, ceviche and seafood platters that will astound. Out of doors, the eatery offers a massive wooden deck filled with dining tables overlooking the water. Marker 13 is the renovated historical outdoor bar and is a conversation piece in itself. You can also catch a glimpse of watercraft being transported to and from the Hilton Head dry boat storage facility right next door. The deck is also the place to enjoy the establishment’s Sunset Reggae Party on Tuesday evenings with live music and promotional drink specials.

Sashimi Combo Plate, Angry Tuna Roll, and Tuna Sashimi

Here are just a few items from the Dive Bar at Skull Creek Boathouse. Above, a combo plate of fresh and colorful sashimi, the Angry Tuna Roll encompasses flavorful ingredients such as spicy tuna, avocado and a soy and eel sauce drizzle, while an order of thinly sliced tuna is topped with spicy mayo, avocado and crispy onion strings.

Grilled Talapia Sandwich, Soft Shell Crab Sandwich Special, Blackened Mahi Mahi Sandwich, and the Ahi Tuna Sandwich

If you’re in the mood for a terrific fish sandwich, this is the place to get it. In fact, this is really the place to get ANY sandwich! Above, revitalizing renditions of the Grilled Talapia Sandwich with a side of slaw, the sinful but melt-in-your mouth Soft Shell Crab Sandwich Special, a Blackened Mahi Mahi Sandwich with crinkle fries, and two images of the Ahi Tuna Sandwich served with potato salad. There’s literally something for everyone here, as you can see in these photos.

Napa Salad

Above, the Napa Salad ($11) is enhanced with dark green baby spinach, crunchy toasted almonds, baby green beans, creamy avocado slices, fresh red grapes, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds for a little extra crunch, crumbled goat cheese (one of my favorites!) , and honey poppy seed dressing. You can add grilled chicken, shrimp, butcher filet or chilled rare seared tuna for an additional $4.50, but I just wanted to enjoy the salad without any additions this particular afternoon. And I certainly did enjoy it.

Below, another salad we can recommend is the Chopped Creole Cobb Salad ($12.50). Presented with a Creole Honey Mustard dressing that I asked to be placed on the side (just in case it was too spicy), I found that it was more creamy with a hint of spice…not heat so to speak. This outstanding serving was prepared with chilled shrimp, chopped smooth avocado, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped turkey, mixed colorful greens, chopped tomato, apple wood smoked bacon, tasso ham (which gave the salad an additional kick of spice), and crumbled blue cheese dressing. Is anyone drooling right about now?

Fish Tacos

The above Fish Tacos ($7.50) were served with crisp chilled iceberg lettuce, diced tomato salsa and taco sauce inside soft flour tortillas. These were grilled, but patrons may also request the fish to be fried as well. The fish was tender and flaky, while the crunch of the crisp lettuce and mild flavor of the tomato salsa inside completed the entire package. A side of crinkle fries with a ramekin of ketchup was also a nice accompaniment.

SKB (4)

Crab & Shrimp Dip

Crunchy multi-colored tortilla chips are beautiful to admire. Pair them with Skull Creek Boathouse’s Crab & Shrimp Dip ($9.25) and you’ll be smiling ear to ear. This emulsion is made with artichoke hearts, hearts of palm, and creamy goat cheese. (They must have known I was coming with all of the goat cheese!) Easily shared between four people if ordered as an appetizer, this dish is the perfect starter to a meal.

For incredible fresh seafood, tasty fish sandwiches, sushi and seafood platters at the indoor Dive Bar, crisp flavorsome salads and an outdoor bar with a storied past all overlooking the beautiful tranquil waters of coastal Hilton Head Island, there’s nothing like Skull Creek Boathouse. We always enjoy our meals there, and we’ll continue to dine there on future visits to the coast.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: A lively and exciting waterfront location perfect for enjoying an amazing view. The entire establishment is decorated in eclectic decor with a nautical theme. Colors abound everywhere and as a whole (indoors and outside) the entire eatery is extremely pleasing to take in.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Refreshing flavorsome cocktails, freshly prepared fare with sensational ingredients, and expertly crafted meals that are without flaw.
  • LOCATION: Skull Creek Boathouse is located at 397 Squire Pope Road on Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.
  • HOURS: The restaurant is available for service for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 AM-4 PM, then also on weekends from 11 AM-4 PM. Dinner is served Sundays through Thursdays from 4 PM-10 PM, then on Friday and Saturday from 4 PM-11 PM. The Sunset Supper Menu is offered daily from 4 PM-5:45 PM. Brunch is presented on the weekends from 10 AM-3 PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: We have always experienced a kind, informed, conversational and efficient staff during our visits to this location.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Excellent freshness of sushi at the Dive Bar indoors, meticulous consistency of the quality of what is served, and overall satisfactory pricing for what is offered.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $15 per 750mL bottle
  • PARKING: There is ample complimentary parking in front of the restaurant alongside the Hilton Head Boat Storage Building.
  • TOTAL BILL: It has really depended on how many people we’ve had with us and what was ordered during our many meals at Skull Creek Boathouse, so a good average of our experiences with the total bills we’ve had ranged from $35 to $75.

FIG & OLIVE KITCHEN, TASTING BAR & OLIVE OIL MARKET… “Mediterranean Elegance On Melrose!”

It takes unwavering determination, the passion and perseverance of a saint, and an astounding will to follow the dream of creating a restaurant that is not only successful, but also inviting, alluring, and romantic in the heart of a bustling city. The owners of Fig & Olive restaurant have succeeded in this endeavor not once, but an impressive five times. With prestigious locales in New York (the Meatpacking District, Westchester, Uptown on Lexington, and on Fifth Avenue), plans are now in the works for a sixth locale in Newport Beach, California this year. Fig & Olive also upholds its successful reputation with its location in West Hollywood, CA on Melrose Place where we visited for a late lunch and were pleasantly impressed by what was offered with every aspect of the restaurant.

One of Several Live Fig Trees, The Front Entry of the Restaurant, & the Ordering Catalog for Fig & Olive’s Gourmet Market Items

Executive Chef Pascal Lorange harmoniously crafts his noteworthy signature dishes in the unmistakable Fig & Olive kitchen (where diners can catch a glimpse through the opening of a wall of shelves graced by hundreds of bottles of imported olive oils) where all things delicious and heavenly are being created. Mediterranean works of edible art utilizing imported and local tastes from Southern France, Spain, and Italy are carefully prepared and meticulously plated for delivering to awaiting patrons in the various dining areas of the restaurant. Chef Pascal sears, breads, fillets, roasts, and constructs his creatively inventive eye-opening culinary presentations. Using Fig & Olive’s namesake imported olive oils instead of butter in all the dishes is another incredible feat that Chef Pascal executes nicely.

Main Dining Room Enhanced By Fresh Rosemary “Hedges” and an Open Kitchen Amidst Decorative Bottles of Olive Oil

A multitude of seating options presents itself as you peruse the restaurant with optical observation. All flowing effortlessly from one area to the next. The restaurant abounds with fresh rosemary gently dividing the main dining room into intimate sections giving the feeling of dining within a sunbathed herb garden. Live fig trees placed throughout the establishment make a prominent statement, terra cotta-colored ceilings and white washed walls adorned with black wrought iron railings and strategically placed sconces contrast nicely, a skylight enhanced elegantly-appointed enclosed dining patio through a glass entry enchants, and the incredible aroma between the fresh herbs in the restaurant and the mouthwatering emanations wafting from the open kitchen invites patrons inside creating a warmth and comfort that Fig & Olive is proud to possess.

Fig & Olive1Sunbathed Patio Allows For Additional Intimate Dining

The nicely-appointed skylight-enhanced patio offers patrons another exceptional setting. Daylight floods through three large overhead bays, while walls are adorned with Fig & Olive’s namesake balsamic vinegars and other gourmet delights. Terracotta tiles show off their hue beneath your feet, and live fig trees stand proudly as one of two of the restaurants mascots. (The second being the olive tree, of course!)

You’ll notice the chic communal table and tasting bar upon entering this haven of culinary delights. Plates of delectable fare can be shared, while new acquaintances can be made at the same time. The feeling is intimate, yet open, and the area flows into the lounge and bar space without flaw or hesitation. Upstairs, an additional lounge and dining area allows for a view of the lower floor over a black wrought-iron railing depicted with carved leaves of an olive tree. Downstairs, a reserved area for the resident DJ exists for live entertainment Thursday through Friday nights. The lights go down, candles and wall sconces are lit, the music begins, yet the environment remains intimate and romantic.

Fresh Baked Fougassee Olive Oil Bread Served With A Trio of Signature Olive Oils

Sometimes, the bread offering can make or break a beginning impression. The perfect beginning to a perfect meal can be found at Fig & Olive. The warm fresh-out-of-the-oven Fougassee olive oil bread that is presented before orders are taken resembled tiny pillows of happiness dipped into liquid silk. Unique in flavor and texture, our only disagreement was which one of three olive oils we liked best for dipping purposes.

We were thrilled to partake in Fig & Olive’s Three-Course Lunch Tasting Menu. I appreciate tasting menus because they allow for the experience of a multitude of flavors. This also aides in featuring various items at dining establishments for our readers. This time, my husband joined in and elected the Three-Course Tasting Menu as well. Tasting Menu portions at Fig & Olive are substantial…as large as their ala carte versions, and encompass all the flavor, excitement, and intrigue one can imagine tasting. Available Monday through Friday, this tasting menu is a ‘must-do’ at Fig & Olive when you’re hoping to experience an array of tasty and comestible pleasures.

SkyDriveTrio of Crostinis

The Crostini selection at Fig & Olive is noteworthy. Meticulously handcrafted, designed to entice the visual perception as well as the palate, and appearing as though they should be placed upon a pedestal and worshiped, we were presented with three of the numerous crostini versions before our first courses arrived. The first, the Goat Cheese, Caramelized Onion, and Chive Crostini. Creamy goat’s cheese just begging to be devoured mixed with the sweet earthy flavor of caramelized onions and topped with bright green fresh chives..this sampling beckoned seconds. The next, the Manchego, Fig & Marcona Almond Crostini took our taste buds for another flavor enhanced ride with its terrific blend of Manchego cheese and sweet fig topped off with the excellent crunch of Marcona almonds…just a delight to enjoy. The third consisted of prosciutto, ricotta, fig, honey and almonds…it just kept getting better and better as we explored the tastes of each crostini. Paired with a few glasses of white wine, these were highly enjoyable.

Beef Carpaccio

For a mere $3 additional charge to the Three-Course Lunch Tasting Menu, I selected the Beef Carpaccio for my first course. Would it be frivolous to say that this delightful presentation was “heaven on a plate?” We think not!

Fig & Olive’s Chicken Tanjine

Served with a side presentation of couscous, Marcona almonds, cilantro pesto, and a spicier addition for those more adventurous, the Fig & Olive Chicken Tajine was a satisfactory conglomeration of flavors for my husband as his main course. My eyes wandered to the Paella Del Mar for my entrée. Not only vibrant in color, but outrageously entertaining to the taste buds, this preparation included the aromatic and flavorsome culmination of ingredients such as black tiger shrimp, mussels, and calamari accompanied by a perfectly cooked and visually stunning saffron rice with chicken, green peas, artichoke, red bell pepper, a saffron Aioli, pimento, and oregano, then finished off with Hojiblanco olive oil.

Dessert “Crostini”

If you’re having a fight against your sweet tooth, then Fig & Olive is the ideal place to satisfy that craving. Our readers know we don’t usually indulge in too many sweet temptations, but we simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sample what Pastry Chef Andrew LeStourgeon was offering when we stopped in. How about a sweet crostini to start the taming of the sugar craving off on the right start? The Dessert “Crostini”, a shortbread foundation built up nicely with an ample spreading of mascarpone, pistachios, micro basil for garnish, and the most flavorful Amarena cherries you’ve ever tasted grace this creation. We loved the expert presentation by Chef Andrew. And the savory flavor of the dark sugar-preserved cherries joined with the creamy mascarpone and shortbread cookie were lovingly joined together on the palate. But there was more. We were somehow transported to a chocolate heaven of sorts upon first bite of the Chocolate Pot De Crème offering. Made with white, milk, and dark chocolates, and served with praline financiers, this frothy-topped seduction of the senses remained no more after my husband and I devoured it graciously. (Sweet tooth yearning sufficiently tamed!)

TRUE FOOD KITCHEN… “Santa Monica’s Healthy Flavorsome Dining Option!”

True Food Kitchen’s culinary concept is simple. Serve seasonal, sustainable, pure fare with great flavor and stunning presentation. This trend-setting establishment plays host to an astounding variety of flavor-packed deliciousness through an array of items on their menu. Several of the options are even gluten free and vegetarian. As a meat eater, my husband was delightfully surprised to find that his meal was so satisfying. As a connoisseur of a savory steak at times myself, I was certainly impressed with the delivery of tastes throughout our dining experience.

Though not gluten-free eaters, we appreciated what True Food Kitchen is doing in regards to their assistance providing gluten free and vegetarian options to the masses. Here, chefs are schooled in the importance of gluten-free meal preparation and are careful to keep gluten-free ingredients in their separate area in the kitchen. My best friend from college has been gluten-free for a very long time, and I know she would enjoy this establishment’s effort to help.

At True Food Kitchen, the cuisine isn’t the only thing that’s delicious and healthy. We tried a couple of the non-alcoholic signature beverages. To our amazement, these were crisp, refreshing, and deserved acclamation due to their intriguing flavors and prominent preparations.

Red Moon Signature Beverage & Oogave Natural Mandarin Keylime Soda

I’ve been guilty of consuming my fair share of traditional sodas. Sometimes, a cold sparkling water just won’t do. True Food Kitchen offers a Signature Beverage and natural soda that changed my mind about those sugar-laden additive-enhanced popular refreshments, however. The Red Moon ($5) is made with ruby red grapefruit juice, yuzu, agave, and soda. Very transformational for this soda lover! My husband tried the Oogave Natural Mandarin Key Lime Soda ($4). A sparking chilled beverage flavored with a Mandarin orange and key lime essence. Poured over a tall glass of ice cubes it’s simply perfect.

Grilled Shrimp Spring Rolls

These crunchy, handmade Grilled Shrimp Spring Rolls ($9) carry no guilt with them, and are an excellent starter to split with another member of your dining party. Rolled with sweet green papaya, soba (buckwheat), and earthy cashews, these heavenly logs of inspirational goodness are served with a tantalizing slightly spicy dipping emulsion, which is  appropriately and festively sprinkled with more cashews and fresh chopped parsley.

Turkey Bolognese

What meat lover? My husband’s entree selection was the Turkey Bolognese ($14). He couldn’t believe there was turkey in this vibrant display of house made noodles, organic ground turkey breast meat, and Parmesan cheese. After a taste of it myself, I had to agree with him that this particular dish was spectacularly beefy despite its main ingredient.

Spaghetti Squash Casserole

Have you ever had spaghetti squash? We have both enjoyed this stringy vegetable that resembles angel hair pasta on numerous occasions in years gone by. But we’ve never had it prepared quite like this before. I ordered this entree, curious to see the result. I was wowed by the visual perfection at first, then realized that my wonderment continued after taking a bite. Made with organic tomatoes, zucchini, a mountain of spaghetti squash, and cheese covering the entire surface. Sprinkled with fresh chopped parsley, I really enjoyed the fresh mozzarella chunks placed discretely in the bottom of the bowl where they melted to a succulent, slightly salty river of gooey satisfaction.

Pomegranate Yuzu Sorbet

The creamy, chilly experience of pomegranate flavor enhanced by yuzu (a traditional Japanese citrus fruit) was the perfect conclusion to our meal. Light, flooding with sweet and tangy flavor, the Pomegranate Yuzu Sorbet ($5) was an excellent choice for a little sweetness after a healthy, deliciously sensational lunch at True Food Kitchen.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Enhanced with a people-watching patio overlooking the business of a busy street in Santa Monica, bright yellow umbrellas arched over tables, and a modern colorful interior, this establishment was a pleasure to visit.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Fresh, colorful, healthy, organic, and a MUST to return to again and again.
  • LOCATION: True Food Kitchen is located at 395 Santa Monica Place -Suite 172 in Santa Monica, CA 90401.
  • HOURS: True Food Kitchen is open Monday through Thursday 11 AM to 9 PM, Fridays from 11:30 AM to 10 PM, Saturdays from 10 AM to 10 PM, and on Sundays from 10 AM to 9 PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Efficient, kind-natured, helpful, and happy to see you.
  • PRICE / VALUE: We’re speaking of highly fresh ingredients, organic cuisine and beautifully presented savory fare…hands down a terrific value for the price!

  • PARKING: Accessible convenient parking is available in the mall parking garage right next door to the restaurant within easy walking distance.

TREVI @ THE FORUM SHOPPES AT CAESAR’S… “Italian Outdoor Dining In Vegas…Or Is It?”

Within the The Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas exists an Italian eatery you just cannot miss when there. Trevi, named after the famous Trevi Fountain In Rome, offers diners comfortable seating options, stunning modern decor with an Italian aptitude, and scrumptious menu and beverage selections to suit most anyone.

Trevi_Sign

The below photos showcase the front view of Trevi with its expansive ‘outdoor patio’ populated by many. Fixtures glow with a dim romantic light, while the restaurant’s oval shaped 28-seat bar provides patrons with refreshing libations and pleasant conversation from friendly informed mixologists

Trevi2

If you’ve never been to The Forum Shops At Caesar’s Palace, you really should visit it at least once. The ‘outdoor’ appearance truly is pretty spectacular. Though you’re indoors, this shopping and dining area of the property was designed to seemingly bring you out of doors. If you’ve never experienced The Forum Shops, we can understand how that may sound a bit confusing, but the photos below show what we’re talking about. Not only is the massive arched ceiling of the mall artistically crafted to authentically look like the heavens above complete with wispy clouds, but the colors of a fading sunset also enhance this already striking spectacle.

Trevi1

The Fountain of the Gods & the “Indoor” Heavens

Though it’s not the Trevi Fountain, the Fountain Of The Gods in The Forum Shops is a beautiful site. Located beside Trevi, it offers diners and passers-by a transformational experience with its waterfall and breathtaking sculptures and columns. But the view of the Fountain of The Gods and Trevi’s ‘out of doors’ setting and breathtaking architecture and design by the renowned Rockwell Group are not all you’ll discover here…the fine Italian cuisine is another phenomenal part of this exciting Italian locale.

Trevi_Coral Crush

Capri Coral Crush Martini

Here’s a delicious introduction to a sensational meal at Trevi…among the numerous liquid compilations from the bar such as their rich red wines, refreshing Mojitos, and many others, the Capri Coral Crush ($11) was my favorite. Made with Smirnoff Melon Vodka, blended mango, pineapple, guava and passion fruit juice, this flavorsome cocktail was served in a martini glass and is a perfectly chilled frozen treat…with a little something extra!

Trevi_Eggplant Parmesan Appetizer

Eggplant Parmesan Appetizer

Executive Chef Peter Scaturro seriously knows how to keep patrons returning to Trevi with his crafty and succulent Italian fare. Above, The Eggplant Parmesan Appetizer ($9.95) offers sauteed eggplant crowned with a tangy marinara sauce, melted mozzarella cheese, and strips of basil highlighting the whole dish. Not only a beautiful and vibrant presentation, but also a delicious one as well.

Trevi_Margherita Pizza

Margherita Pizza

Another tasty bite we enjoyed on our last visit to Trevi was their brick oven fired Margherita Pizza ($13.95). An overwhelmingly flavor filled combination of Roma tomatoes, melty Mozzarella cheese and fresh basil make this 6-serving item perfect for a party of two or four.

A remarkable location for taking a break from shopping at The Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace, meeting friends and family for dinner, or just having a few crisp glasses of vino at the Trevi bar will leave you ready to return for another meal very soon. It did for us, and we think you’ll be happy you stopped in.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Modern decor and architecture designed especially for Trevi by the infamous Rockwell Group architects, relaxing fountain beside the ‘patio’ courtyard, and an appropriate location for people watching in The Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace.
  • FOOD / DRINK: House-crafted wood fire oven pizzas, hand-shaken refreshing chilled cocktails and wine, and a reasonable price tag on every item at this Italian establishment…who wouldn’t love it here?
  • LOCATION: Trevi is located in The Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace at 3500 Las Vegas Boulevard South, NV 89109.
  • HOURS: The restaurant is available for lunch, Happy Hour (called ‘Trevi Time’, and dinner. Hours are Sunday through Thursday 11 AM to 11 PM, and Friday through Saturday from 11 AM to 12 midnight. ‘Trevi Time’ is available Sunday through Friday from 2 PM – 6 PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Our server was delightful, knowledgeable about the menu and beverage list, and was a wonderful conversation partner throughout our dining experience.
  • PRICE / VALUE: We were satisfied with the cost of our orders for what we were charged and the location we were visiting.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $25 per 750mL bottle…hey, it’s Vegas!
  • CONTACT INFO: Phone: (702) 735-4663, Website: www.trevi-italian.com
  • PARKING: On some occasions visiting Caesar’s Palace, we’ve had a driver to deliver us to the facility, while on other trips, we’ve left our vehicle with Caesar’s Palace Valet Department located in front of the main entrance to Caesar’s Palace Casino & Resort.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our bill for one Eggplant Parmesan appetizer, a Margherita Pizza, one Capri Coral Crush, a glass of Merlot and a Mojito totaled just under $65, but we feel it was worth the quality of the food an beverages that were presented along with the terrific ambiance and exceptionally friendly and efficient service.

GARDEN BAKERY CAFE… “The BEST Pizza Crust Ever!”

Here’s an interesting coffeehouse concept…a coffeehouse PLUS a pizza kitchen! We’re not kidding! Garden Cafe in Sherman Oaks, California is a full service restaurant and coffeehouse which offers an intimate outdoor wrap-around patio, free Wi-Fi, some of the BEST pizza we’ve ever remembered enjoying so much, and a private complimentary parking lot for customers. Sound too good to be true? Well, it’s not. Our several occasions visiting this newer haunt in the area proved that Garden Cafe will be around for a very long time in upcoming years.

Coffee, coffee drinks, espresso, iced and hot teas…and now serving select wine and beer,  Garden Cafe has sprung forth into the bustling neighborhood community of Sherman Oaks with gusto. Inside, a soothing Mediterranean and almost Tuscan decor relaxes the mind and soothes the soul. On the patio, bright red and green canvas umbrellas block the sun’s rays when trying to read the latest best seller, strategically placed comfy sofas, patio tables and benches allow for a comfortable and spacious dining experience, and potted plants and fruit trees are accompanies by growing ivy that climbs up arched trellises that greets patron into this intricate and romantic atmosphere.

Hot Green Tea, Steaming Espressoo & the Garden Cafe Menu

So, what about those pizzas that we have been talking about? Well, here are three of the flaky, light doughy creations topped with vibrant colored toppings bursting with interesting flavors…

Pulled Short Rib Pizza

The pizza crust at Garden Cafe truly is artisan. Hand-crafted and wood-fired, baked-to- perfection crusty gems are seemingly baked with a touch of magic. The Pulled Short Rib Pizza ($14) is made with a unique goat cheese sauce with grilled onions, spinach and arugula is a phenomenally beefy flavor experience. We appreciated the edible decor on top of fresh baby arugula and hand-shaved Parmesan cheese. Simple, gooey-cheese-laden, and a magnificent gentle crunch with every bite.

Margherita Pizza

The Margherita Pizza ($8) is a refreshing taste of Italy with its eye-catching tomato sauce and fontina cheese base, fresh Parmesan cheese, and tomato slices. Atop all of this cheesy tomatoey goodness sits slices of fresh mozzarella cheese and bright green fragrant basil. An excellent choice for sharing or ordering for one with leftovers for later!

Forest Mushroom Pizza

After some debate, and many slices of pizza at Garden Cafe, we’ve decided that the Forest Mushroom Pizza ($12) is our favorite of the three we’ve had. Crafted with a garlic-goat cheese sauce with wild mushrooms, roasted garlic, arugula, and a signature cheese blend, a truffle essence is also added to enhance the experience. After our first time indulging in the Forest Mushroom Pizza, we’ve had a hard time going back to the others. The earthy flavor from the mushrooms really offers a sensational flavor enhancement.

Here’s another delicious spin on that traditional round dough-based favorite we all love…how about prosciutto and fig on your gourmet pizza?

3.17

Prociutto & Fig Pizza

Thin sliced colorful prosciutto, goat cheese, brilliant green arugula, a sweet and savory fig spread, and The Garden Bakery Cafe’s signature cheese blend make this creation a sensation sure to suit anyone who tries it. We loved how this version encompassed  sweet and salty tastes so perfectly.

Chicken Minestrone Soup of the Day With Buttered Garlic Toast

On a chilly day, or any day for that matter, Garden Cafe’s soup selections will certainly hit the spot creating a cozy warmth deep within. I enjoyed the Chicken Minestrone Soup ($6), which arrived in a ceramic soup tureen atop a long presentation platter with garlicky butter graced toast points. This was a hearty soothing liquid with its bright green field peas, fresh sliced carrots, steamed broccoli and shredded white meat chicken swimming in an unforgettable tomato emulsion. Pure delight with each spoonful, this was a thoroughly satisfying selection.

Turkey Club On CIabatta With a House Side Salad

My husband enjoyed the Turkey Club Sandwich ($12) on an artisan ciabatta bun. This enjoyable compilation was assembled with oven roasted turkey, jack cheese, fresh chunks of avocado, smoked bacon, tomato, pickled shallots, and a zesty pesto aioli. The ciabatta bread was excellently toasted, and held together quite nicely throughout the duration of the meal without crumbling or allowing its ingredients to escape. A pleasant chilled house side salad with ample squares of feta cheese, cucumber slices, iceberg lettuce and cherry tomato halves complimented this item with ease.

2.241

Homemade Turkey Meatball Soup

Here’s a treat worth trying for a simple $6…the Homemade Turkey Meatball Soup. This ‘Soup of the Day’ favorite was hearty without being too heavy. Nicely flavored with healthy vegetables and lentils, this guilt-free treat will keep you warm on a chilly day, or satisfy your craving for a hot bowl of homemade soup any other day of the year.

1.26

Smoked Salmon Artisan Grilled Cheese Sandwich

The Smoked Salmon Artisan Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($13.50), was savory and full of satisfying smoked salmon, melted provolone cheese, fresh sliced tomatoes and crisp arugula on sourdough bread. If you’re a grilled cheese fan, this is the place to turn up your senses when it comes to two slices of bread and cheese…Garden Bakery Cafe amplifies that much loved sandwich by adding additional tastes including the above smoked salmon, tomato and basil, pastrami, and even…SHORT RIBS! Take a look at the below Spicy Short Rib Artisan Grilled Cheese Sandwich, and tell us if your mouth isn’t watering right now!

2.242

Spicy Short Rib Grilled Artisan Cheese Sandwich

The Spicy Short Rib Artisan Sandwich ($12) is compiled of sweet grilled onions, fresh spinach, jack cheese, red bell peppers, and a spicy aioli on a ciabatta bun. This sandwich option gives the word mouthwatering an entirely new meaning with it’s tender, juicy pulled short rib meat mixed with perfectly grilled veggies and the most delicious ciabatta bun ever!

And you just cannot forget about the Chinese Chicken Salad. Crafted with chilled Iceberg lettuce, freshly cut cabbage, refreshing carrots, scallions, and tender white meat chicken chicken gently tossed in a ginger-sesame vinaigrette then topped with crunchy wonton strips. Um…is anyone getting hungry about now?

Garden Bakery Cafe

Chinese Chicken Salad

We cannot end this article without telling you about Garden Bakery Cafe’s burgers! Below, the flavors of savory melty American cheese, chunky avocado, pickled jalapeno, onion, Romaine lettuce leaves, mayo, tomato, savory bacon, and 1/2 pound of Angus beef cooked to your specification on a brioche bun left us speechless. (Except for the “oohs” and “ahhs” being yelled by our taste buds with every bite!) Served with perfectly prepared steak fries (those were pretty darn good, as well!), this dish is a hearty and filling selection that would make a terrific meal any time of the week…

BLUE DOG BEER TAVERN… “Burgers & Brews In a Dog-Friendly Atmosphere!”

We’re not huge beer fanatics, but we found a spot that caters to the beer lover that also crafts pretty phenomenal burgers as well. Blue Dog Beer Tavern opened in 2009 after being birthed from a remodel of a 1940s California bungalow-style building originally erected to house a physician’s office. Years later, someone got the great idea to turn that structure into Blue Dog Beer Tavern, a neighborhood hangout for locals and visitors from afar who are lucky enough to be ‘in the know’ about this friendly local canteen.

During the renovation of this now popular haunt, original beams were left exposed to showcase the intricacy of the authentic construction of the building. It’s quite impressive when you enter the tavern. Patrons can literally see ‘through’ the walls inside. It certainly makes for a terrific conversation piece while dining or enjoying a refreshing beverage while watching a favorite sports game on one of several monitors near the bar. Another fun sight is the collection of framed photos of canines everywhere one can look inside. Have a furry friend? Bring in a photo and Blue Dog’s staff will frame the image and hang it somewhere inside the tavern!

With eight beers on tap, over 25 bottled brews, and a decent selection canned as well, there’s an ale here for every beer lover. There are also a few select wines available in addition.

How about those burgers? Blue Dog Beer Tavern was listed by CBS as one of the best burgers in the valley, while L.A. Weekly voted the eatery one of the “best sports bars in Los Angeles”. Powerful comments from such strong sources. But frankly, we feel that Blue Dog deserves the recognition.

Blue Dog Burgers, Fries and Purple Cabbage Slaw

From the root beer BBQ sauce to the artisan potato buns to the 1/3 pound house-ground brisket/chuck compounded burgers crafted by hand, the kitchen at Blue Dog knows what they’re doing when it comes to satisfying hungry customers an leaving them happily returning. Try the Fire Starter burger loaded with jalapenos, the Black ‘n Bleu Burger with it’s Cajun spices and bleu cheese, or maybe the Italian Supermodel with provolone, meaty pepperoni, fresh basil, Parmesan cheese and a phenomenal marinara sauce. Lots of flavors to chose from, and many more sandwiches an menu options as well.

Crisp Mouthwatering Salads and Cole Slaw

If you’re not in the mood for one of Blue Dog’s mouthwatering burgers, there’s always one of several colorful crisp salads to please those hunger pangs. Try The Sherman with chicken breast meat tossed in root beer BBQ sauce mixed with bits of yellow corn, hearty beans and crunchy tortilla strips, creamy avocado, bibb and green leaf lettuces and shredded cheddar cheese. Or the vegan Spa Salad containing a variety of beans, dried cranberries, almonds, avocado and just for fun (and flavor), Blue Dog’s house-whipped pear-vanilla dressing!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Exposed beams throughout, framed photos of canines covering nearly every inch of the interior, fun and lively atmosphere.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Spectacular burgers, fresh tasty filling salads, a variety of beers and a few wines available.
  • LOCATION: Blue Dog Beer Tavern is located at 4524 Saugus Avenue in Sherman Oaks, CA 91403.
  • HOURS: Blue Dog Beer Tavern opens its door for business Monday through Friday from 11:30 AM to 11 PM, and on Saturday and Sunday from 11 AM to 11 PM. Happy Hour is presented Monday through Friday from 3 PM to 6 PM, offering select beer and food items from $2.99 – $4.99.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: We’ve always experiences kind, courteous service by the staff at Blue Dog.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Exceptional value for what’s ordered at this location. We’ve enjoyed Blue Dog’s incredible burgers and refreshing salads on multiple ocassions with no complaints about the prices.
  • CORKAGE FEE: No outside alcohol is permitted inside the restaurant.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our bills have never gone above $35 for the two of us.

FIREHOUSE GREEK RESTAURANT… “No Fires…Just Amazing Gyros!”

We were early to meet friends for a concert at the Valley Performing Arts Center on the CSU campus in Northridge. We were famished from not making time to enjoy a meal earlier in the day due to our business over the hill, so we made time to stop in at Firehouse Restaurant for a bite before heading to the arts center.  It was somewhat of a trek, but once we made it there, we were able to relax.  We had been previously tipped off about Firehouse Restaurant by friends, and knowing how I adore a great gyro, my husband encouraged me to give it a try since our friends’ recommendation was so enthusiastically high when they spoke about it. So off we went to the restaurant not knowing what we would expect to find.

The building was a renovated firehouse from what an employee told us while we were there. It’s a small establishment. A two-story, brick facade street-side construction that’s fairly easy to miss as you turn right at the street light from Reseda onto Victory due to it being so close after the turn. If you don’t keep an eye out for it, you just might pass it. But if you do, please turn around and go back. Because Firehouse Restaurant is so worthy of your visit. The structure is trimmed in blue paint with matching shutters, and offers a small parking area for customers in the back of the eatery. If you go during a slower time during the day, such as between the lunch and dinner hours, you will probably find an available space to park there.

You can enter from the back door of the building, or there is a street front entry as well.  If you arrive through the rear door after parking in the lot, a brick-walled hallway will lead you past a stairwell and into the main dining area. The furnishings remind me of what one might find inside a castle somewhere with its heavy and sturdy solid wood manufacturing and metal details on both the tables and chairs. One wall even has a hand-painted mural showcasing a pleasing-to-the-eye depiction of a serene-looking Greek harbor with drifting boats, white plastered hillside abodes, village shops, a lighthouse and a sandy shore surrounded by an azure sea that made me stop for a brief moment and wish I was there.

Dolmades, Rice Pilaf & Combo Meals

The dolmades ($1.95 each) are delicate grape leaves that are stuffed with long-grain rice mixed with vegetables and succulent ground beef topped with a savory tzatziki sauce and a bit of parsley for a garnish. We each ordered one, and relished in the sensational flavor they projected. Above, you can see the inside of one of the dolmades filled with beefy goodness, and below that, a picture of the two dolmades as they were served. Haven’t had dolmades just yet? Then it’s time to give them a try. And Firehouse Greek Restaurant is a terrific place to break yourself in.

INSIDER’S TIP: I always ask for a little extra tzatziki sauce on the side to add to my gyro sandwich. It’s warm, creamy, flavorful and garlicky enough without being overbearing. This has to be some of the best tzatziki sauce I’ve has in a very long time!

 Gyro Sandwiches and Leftovers Galore

Okay, it’s time to discuss Firehouse Greek Restaurant’s sensational gyros. This single item is something the establishment is well known for. And after one bite of one of these luscious, tasty, mouthwatering Greek specialties, you will discover why. Above, the gyro sandwich is dressed with crunchy red onions, crisp greens, fresh tomatoes, and the zesty, perfectly-seasoned composition of beef and lamb grilled to excellence. The gyros are the largest portions we have ever experienced, and in reality, are large enough for two people to share. (Of course, we always end up polishing them off without the assistance of a to-go box!) The gyro ‘plates’ come with a side of either fries, rice pilaf, or a Greek salad along with a large drink and the ever popular center-of-attention gyro sandwich. The restaurant does not serve alcohol. However, we were told that customers may bring in a bottle of wine to enjoy with NO CORKAGE FEE! (Was I screaming that out loud?)  And you simply have to try the pita bread that the restaurant wraps their gyros in. Light, fluffy, tender…I could literally go on about the pitas for hours..you get the picture. But you have to get the flavor as well, so give Firehouse Greek Restaurant a try. We know once you visit once, you’ll be turned into a true regular at this eatery like we were. We actually make special trips over the hill to have Firehouse Restaurant’s amazing gyros!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: The restaurant has always been very clean, organized and welcoming when we have been there. A soothing hand-painted mural of a sapphire sea surrounded by a quaint town and harbor draws your attention to its uniqueness as you approach the counter to place your order.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Scrumptious gyros with tender, lean, perfectly seasoned meat, the most tender, fluffy, tempting pita wrap we’ve ever experienced, and for the price of it all, we couldn’t be happier recommending the eatery.
  • LOCATION: Firehouse Greek Restaurant is located at 18450 Victory Boulevard in Tarzana, CA 91335.(If you take Reseda to the light, turn right onto Victory, and look for the restaurant on your immediate right. It comes up very fast, so be sure not to miss it.)
  • HOURS: The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 AM – 9 PM, then on Sundays from 11 AM – 9 PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: There is now table service during lunch and dinner hours. Take out orders can be placed at the walk-up window inside. The staff has always been very kind when we have visited, and they are always willing to assist if we have any requests or questions. Always a smile on their faces, and always happy to see us return time and time again.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Such large quality portions for two adults for under $20 (including tax) for a gyro combo and an additional single gyro sandwich??? Are you kidding! Definitely a terrific value for the price!
  • CORKAGE FEE: Here’s my favorite line again… “NO CORKAGE FEE!”  That always makes me smile! Especially when the value and quality of the cuisine is consistently as incredible as it it at Firehouse Greek Restaurant.
  • CONTACT INFO: Phone: (818) 881-3118.
  • PARKING: A small lot is located behind the restaurant for customers free of charge.
  • TOTAL BILL: We have at times ordered more than just one gyro plate combo and a separate gyro sandwich. But on more than one occasion, our general order includes one gyro sandwich, and a gyro plate/combo that comes with a large drink and one side as well as the gyro sandwich itself. This usually brings our total bill to about $16.80 (including tax). And so much food for two people…amazing!

TOUCAN CAFE… “Go Where The Locals Go!”

Locals flock to Toucan Cafe for their succulent fare, pleasing environment and friendly service. My husband and I found out about this hidden treasure located in midtown Savannah from some friends who were delighted to share their experiences dining at this tucked away eatery with us. We’re so happy they did! Since that time, we have made Toucan Cafe one of our top five restaurants that we visit in the city when we’re in town. (Yes, it’s really THAT good!) You may have to drive past the establishment a couple of times before finding it. That’s what we wound up doing since it is positioned down a long driveway behind another small building that blocks the view of the eatery from the street. However, once we did locate the property, parked our vehicle and delighted in what Toucan cafe had to offer, we returned again and again…

Toucan Cafe, lovingly called ‘Toucan’s’ by locals, offers an inviting environment from the time you walk into the restaurant to the time you depart. Its beige stucco exterior, enhanced by flourishing leafy palms around the perimeter, compliments the continuous line of potted plants along the entry, while the gentle coaxing resonance of flowing water from a nearby fountain sets you at ease.

The approach to the front door tips you off about what awaits inside. More lush plants greet your approach, as color begins to come into play. A deep purple painted door and ceiling, lime green chairs next to a toucan-decorated handwritten menu board…but wait…that’s just the beginning to this palate-pleasing experience…

Once inside, bursts of vibrant color and twirling ceiling fans enhance a Caribbean motif, while an eclectic collection of furnishings make great conversation pieces and make you feel at home. A cooled wine display offers diners a selection of choices as you wait to be seated by a friendly and knowledgeable server genuinely happy to see you, and the aroma of fresh bread baking and culinary temptations wafting throughout the cafe make your mouth water and senses heighten.

And how the senses do heighten here! Above, hearty sliced bread is served with a container of chilled butter, a Chardonnay from the restaurant’s wine & beer options refreshes, and several iced teas and cold Arnold Palmers allow for complimentary refills.

Toucan Cafe Caesar Salad

We always begin with the Toucan Cafe Caesar Salad. Above, I like mine with additional Spanish anchovies (a slight additional charge). A simple, yet flavor-packed version with freshly-grated Parmesan cheese, chilled Romaine lettuce and crunchy flavorful croutons.

Moroccan Salmon

Despite the multitude of menu options at Toucan Cafe, I have to confess that of all of the items my husband and I have experienced, my absolute favorite is the Moroccan Salmon dish. This HAS to be one of the most flavorsome, rich-tasting, euphoric salmon preparations I have ever involved my taste buds with. Made with chiffonade leafy greens surrounding the entree, diced tomatoes, Mandarin orange slices, toasted almonds and a warm couscous drizzled with an unbelievably flavorsome curry-honey sauce.

Tilapia Entree

Above, my husband has enjoyed the Tilapia entree on more than a single seating. Served with roasted two-spice potatoes, squash, zucchini, extra virgin olive oil and lemon, this lesson in delicately grilled fish was meticulously executed and the flavor was astounding as well.

Wasabi Pea Encrusted Salmon

The amazing Wasabi Pea Encrusted Salmon was so tender, succulent and certainly a unique presentation for a salmon dish, my husband began ordering it repeatedly for a while as we continued to dine at Toucan Cafe. Here it was prepared with mashed potatoes, sauteed spinach and a creamy not-light-but-definitely-savory sauce.

Salmon Steak With Mashed Sweet Potatoes & Roasted Vegetables

The Salmon Steak with Mashed Sweet Potatoes and Roasted Vegetables was another favorite of ours at Toucan Cafe. With the sauce ordered on the side, we were able to control just how much succulent sauce we were getting. Of course, we wound up devouring the entire container (and asked for more!). The fish was fork-tender as expected, while the roasted vegetables and mashed sweet potatoes created a lovely taste and visual presentation of this offering.

We cannot remember how many times we’ve actually dined at Toucan Cafe. It’s definitely been a LOT! After our first encounter with this delightful friendly establishment, we were hooked. We’re sure you will be as well after your first visit!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Calming entrance with palms, numerous potted plants along the entry…then massive festive colors of the Caribbean welcome you in as you enter the front door as the ‘toucan’ motif and vibrant hues create an exciting and colorful atmosphere.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Sensational…complimentary refills on iced tea, a pleasing selection of wines, and outstanding cuisine is being cooked up in the kitchen at this locals’ restaurant.
  • LOCATION: Toucan Cafe is located at 531 Stephenson Avenue in Savannah, GA 31405.
  • HOURS: The restaurant is available Monday through Saturday from 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM for lunch, Monday through Thursday from 5PM – 9PM for dinner, and again for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 PM – 10 PM.

  • PRICE / VALUE: So reasonable, you won’t believe it. Especially for lunch. And the value overall is spectacular. You’re not just getting what you pay for here…you’re getting that and more!
  • CORKAGE FEE: $15 per 750mL bottle.
  • CONTACT INFO: Phone: (912) 352-2233, Website: www.toucancafe.com
  • PARKING: There is ample parking in the lot that surrounds the restaurant.
  • TOTAL BILL: Most of our total bills came to around $40 (including tax) or near that for two people. That included iced teas, and an entree for each of us, which we don’t think it bad at all

MAGNOLIAS RESTAURANT… “Fine Dining In Casual Sophistication!”

Charleston is home to towering centuries-old moss bearded oak trees, the sweet fragrance of blossoming magnolias and a charm that surges throughout the city as fast as the warm summer breeze off of the Charleston Harbor can find its way through this romantic southern town. Ask any local in this captivating location to name their top five restaurants in the city, and we guarantee that in their catalogue of dining establishments will be Magnolias on East Bay Street. A definite must-visit eatery, the inviting pale pink facade of Magnolias restaurant will welcome you inside with its decorative squared-off columns and wrought iron detail shaded by neighboring palm trees along the sidewalk. Serving locals and attracting visitors alike, this culinary gem is by far one not to miss..

The city streets are enchanting. Southern and sophisticated at the same time, Charleston was named ‘Friendliest City in America’ by Travel + Leisure Magazine in 2010, came in second on their infamous list of ‘World’s Best Cities in the U.S. and Canada’ in 2011, and was awarded the magazine’s #1 spot for ‘Fine Dining Restaurants’ in 2012! Visiting this enthralling part of the country will prove just why. Between the well-mannered friendly locals to the fine consistent southern cuisine to the stunning comprehensive views across the harbor and multitude of attractions and hospitable luxurious lodging available on a year-round basis, this place has become one of our favorites to visit when our travels take us to the southeast.

Here’s one of those restaurants that had very memorable bread service. Perfectly crusted on the outside, soft and warm on the inside (with a house made flavored butter) gently blanketed in a white linen napkin upon being served. Incredible flavor, visual delight, and presentation galore, this bread is the perfect method of starting off a meal at Magnolias.

Fresh-Baked Bread Served With Flavored Butter

The restaurant offers a full bar and mixes and pours some pretty sensational liquid temptations if you’re in the mood for a relaxing libation with your meal. Above, my husband and I enjoyed a glass of Chardonnay and a mixed beverage from the bartender before placing our orders.

One of our most memorable entrees we’ve enjoyed probably too many times is Magnolias’ Parmesan Crusted Flounder ($15). Yes, many establishments prepare a similar version. However, they don’t prepare theirs with jasmine rice and creek shrimp pirloo, lump crab meat, sweet corn, tomato and asparagus salad and top it off with a citrus beurre blanc sauce that screams fabulous! But Magnolias’ own Executive Chef Don Drake executes this and other dishes excellently. The tender fish nearly melts upon contact of each bite, while the light citrus beurre blanc details and enhances every tasty sensation in this dish.

Parmesan Crusted Flounder

A common menu selection I have been guilty of ordering on more than one occasion is the Pan Seared Lump Crab Cake ($14). Jasmine rice and creek shrimp pirloo (we can’t get enough of this rice pirloo), sauteed spinach and a tomato butter sauce that creates a flavorsome edible foundation for a perfectly-crafted lump crab cake just waiting to be devoured…

Pan Seared Lump Crab Cake

Another item I’ve personally enjoyed was the Crab Stuffed Ravioli in a savory creamy sauce accompanied by bits of apple wood smoked bacon, yellow corn kernels, sliced grape tomatoes and green onion. Not the lightest item one can enjoy, but certainly a delightful explosion of sensational flavor between the tangy freshness of the tomato, sweet crunch of the corn and heartiness of the delicate crab meat encased by expertly-cooked ravioli. (Unfortunately, we learned that the Crab Stuffed Ravioli entree is no longer an item on the Magnolias menu, as items sometimes change due to seasonal availability of the freshest ingredients.) However, there are certainly many others you will enjoy indulging in!

Crab Stuffed Ravioli

We always enjoy our visits to the city of Charleston, and at the top of our list when there is having lunch at Magnolias. We think you’ll enjoy it as much as we always do. Southern elegance, unparalleled charm and courteous friendly staff serving up unforgettable southern fare in an upscale, yet relaxed environment.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Classic decor and fresh branches of blossoming fragrant magnolias adorn the front dining room against a red bricked wall in between windows. A fine dining ambiance is present, but there is a casual feel which is also very warm and inviting.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Prepared fresh by Chef Don Drake and plated in an artistic and beautiful-to-the-eye manner, every dish arrives at your table in a timely fashion and tastes like love and care went into each bite!
  • LOCATION: Magnolias is located at 185 East Bay Street in Charleston, SC 29401.
  • HOURS: This establishment is open for lunch Monday through Saturday from 11:30 AM – 3:45 PM. Dinner is available Sunday through Thursday from 3:45 PM – 10 PM, and on Friday and Saturday from 3:45 PM – 11 PM. Sunday brunch is served from 10 AM – 3:45 PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Always smiling, friendly hosts to greet patrons upon entry, hospitable and professional servers, and generous bartenders shaking up and pouring sublime libations.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Always fair and reasonable. Take a look at the link below to Magnolias’ website to view the menu. We think you’ll feel the same for what’s offered.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $25 per 750mL bottle
  • PARKING: There are several metered parking spaces available along East Bay Street, neighboring streets, and nearby city parking lots for your convenience.
  • TOTAL BILL: On lunch dates, my husband and I have never spent more than $60 (including tax) for a couple of entrees, a few drinks and sometimes a shared dessert. No complaints there due to the fantastic service, cuisine and ambiance.

MUSSO & FRANK GRILL… “A Part of Hollywood History!”

Musso & Frank Grill has been a foundation of Hollywood history since this family-owned business originally opened it’s doors in 1919. Existing before the renowned Hollywood sign was erected in the lush Hollywood hills, Musso & Frank Grill was standing proud and serving some of Hollywood’s elite. As a major part of Hollywood’s antiquity, this restaurant also became a literary watering hole for many famous authors in the 1930s. Listed on the “1001 Places to See before You Die” list, Musso & Frank Grill will show you the numerous reasons it is just that.

As you enter the establishment through the front door, you can just feel the history here. A plethora of experience is proudly possessed by every server here…some having been employed here since the 1950s. Waiters in classic red serving jackets with black lapels donning bow ties over crisp white collared shirts hold within them a pride and dignity for being a part of this history-rich foundation of culinary achievement.

Musso & Frank Grill Menus & a Bottle of Wine

Above, the 90-year-old menu still allures those with a taste for the finer things in life, while red leather booths and rich mahogany add even more warmth and inviting ambiance than you could ever imagine. We were treated as though we were part of the family during our dining experience at Musso & Frank Grill. From a sincere courteousness to friendly charming conversation, we had the most delightful time conversing with our waiter. Our acquaintance who dined with us this particular day brought along a bottle of wine for the table and also agreed that our server was one of the kindest and most professional waiters she had experienced in a long time. Then came the cuisine. Just when we thought things couldn’t get any better, we realized how amazing the culinary creations from Chef J. P. Amateau really are…

Fresh-Baked Bread Served Before Meals & the Marinated Herring

The specially-baked Sourdough French bread that is generously served to each patron’s table is soft, flavorful and undoubtedly memorable. Baked to perfection, this scrumptious provision is accompanied by a receptacle of chilled sweet cream butter topped with a thin paper prominently displaying the restaurant’s name. A quick photo with forks rapidly digging in to it, the above right photo is of the eatery’s popular Marinated Herring ($12). A terrific appetizer large enough to share with another person, this marinated herring is served atop iceberg and romaine lettuces with an ample serving of sour cream and is garnished with a black olive.

Grenadine of Beef With Bearnaise Sauce

The Grenadine of Beef With Bearnaise Sauce ($30) was comprised of three tender filets of beef topped with a savory creamy Bearnaise sauce surrounded by a delectable brown gravy and green field peas. My husband ordered this entree and had no trouble at all polishing it off. I did get a couple of bites from him to taste this excellent menu choice and found it to be amazing in taste and visual appeal.

Lobster Thermidor

The Lobster Thermidor was sensationally prepared. This popular French dish was comprised of a creamy conglomeration of cooked lobster meat, egg yolks and cognac, stuffed into a lobster shell, then abundantly topped with Gruyere cheese mixed with a hint of mustard. Such a sublime treat with the succulent lobster and rich mixture of savoriness!

Porcini Mushroom Risotto

I ordered the Porcini Mushroom Risotto ($22). A huge fan of excellently-cooked risotto and porcini mushrooms, I just couldn’t pass this by. So I ordered it. And I devoured the entire thing! And it was one of the most incredible, flavorsome, hearty mushroom risottos ever. The meatiness and earthy flavor from the porcini mushrooms enhanced the creaminess of the risotto. A well-appointed option for anyone who enjoys pasta presentations.

Musso & Frank Torten

If there is one dessert that you have at Musso & Frank Grill, it simply must be their Torten ($7). This Neopolitan is layered with strawberries, fluffy whipped cream and strawberry sauce then topped with fresh strawberries. The three of us shared this sinful treat, and had absolutely no regrets afterward!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Warm mahogany and red leather booths embrace the history of years gone by, while welcoming patrons inside to enjoy its classic elegance and storied past.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Superior fare crafted in the Musso & Frank Grill kitchen keeps customers…both new and old…returning time and time again.
  • LOCATION: Musso & Frank Grill is located at 6667 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, CA 90028.
  • HOURS: Musso & Frank is available for service Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM – 11 PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: We were shown nothing but the utmost professionalism and kindness by our server.
  • PRICE / VALUE: This establishment has been serving the city since 1919. The menu has featured the same Musso & Frank classic options for 90 years now, and there’s a reason why. Superior quality for an acceptable value.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $20 per 750mL bottle
  • PARKING: Validated parking is available at the rear of the restaurant, as well as city parking lots nearby.
  • TOTAL BILL: With the corkage charge, the Marinated Herring appetizer, the Porcini Mushroom Risotto, the Lobster Thermidor, the Grenadine of Beef with Bearnaise Sauce, and the Musso & Frank Torten dessert, our final bill came in a little over $128 (including tax). More than most diners may look forward to spending on a lunch for three, but we enjoyed every detail about it from the superb service to the exquisite ambiance of the restaurant to the classic ambiance of this Hollywood storied eatery.

LARCHMONT BUNGALOW ARTISAN CAFE, BAKERY & BREW… “All the Comforts of Home…Fireplace Included!”

Beneath the cover of numerous shady trees and located on charming Larchmont Boulevard amidst a multitude of quaint shops, local businesses and historic homes lies a thriving business within a hundred-year-old building called Larchmont Bungalow. One visit to this friendly neighborhood cafe and you’ll be as captivated as we were. This eco-friendly fully certified “green” establishment includes reclaimed wood flooring, incorporates biodegradable products into their daily business including coffee mugs made from corn that are recyclable, and allows for ample comfortable seating both indoors as well as outside on one of multiple inviting patios.

Caring for our environment as well as the community of Larchmont Village, manager and partner, Ken Bernard calls the abode “a living room for the neighborhood.” And he couldn’t have said it better in our opinion. Handwritten menus donning daily offerings from the kitchen on hanging chalkboards throughout, warm wood tones from the overhead trussed ceiling and reconditioned wood paneling beneath your feet, and even a cozy fireplace inside the cafe crate a welcoming environment for the perfect meal or live evening candlelit entertainment in front of the fire.

Originally built and operated as a commercial entity in the 1920s, this intriguing establishment has been offering an environmentally-friendly and loving touch to the public on Larchmont Boulevard since it’s opening in 2009. Four years later and it’s still going strong. Why wouldn’t it be. Between the artisan baked goods offered, the extensive multiple meal menu presented (including vegan and gluten-free options), one-of-a-kind house brewed coffees and teas, and the alluring ambiance this cafe emanates, there’s something available for most anyone who steps foot through the threshold of this eatery and neighborhood coffeehouse.

Aside from Larchmont Bungalow’s ever-popular all-day breakfast selections, my husband and I truly enjoyed a recent trip to the artisan cafe and bakery for lunch one lazy sunny afternoon. The tea was uncomparably fresh-tasting, invigorating and perfectly chilled over ice for us. My husband and I each enjoyed a large green variety of this beverage, and were satisfied by its coolness and clean flavor…

Fresh-Brewed Green Iced Tea

Traditional Tuna Melt with Side Salad

Above and below, the Traditional Tuna Melt ($12.95) was served with a side salad and was just oozing with flavorful tuna and cheddar cheese. My husband enjoyed this delicious conglomeration of savoriness, as did I. Certainly one of my favorite tuna melts ever, this sandwich was an experience to behold with the colorful crisp lettuce and crunchy bold-flavored chopped red pepper, sweet and tangy green apple, hearty honey-roasted cashews and taste awakening house vinaigrette dressing.

Traditional Tuna Melt With Side Salad

BBQ Pulled Pork Wrap with Sweet Potato Fries and a Fried Pickle

This stunning menu option (pictured above and below) was gratifying and every bite was particularly comforting to me. At first taste, the BBQ Pulled Pork Wrap ($12.95) sent flavors of tender pulled pork with a tangy sweet barbecue essence across my taste buds for an enthralling ride. I actually debated whether or not to finish it in its entirety, but resolved to take the second half home with me to enjoy and savor later in the evening. (Not bad with a nice glass of Cabernet, I might add!) The tender greens and creamy avocado in this wrap also added to the flavor experience, and the sweet potato fries and fried pickle were also well-received.

BBQ Pulled Pork Wrap with Sweet Potato Fries and a Fried Pickle

Aside from the fresh, lovingly-crafted meal options at this cafe, there is also the bakery part of it not to be overlooked. But we really don’t think you’ll be overlooking it. Upon entering the front door, a huge glass-encased dessert-filled display almost beckons you into its presence mischievously tempting you with a kaleidoscope of various colors, shapes and portions made of only the finest and freshest ingredients…

Larchmont Bunglalow’s Sinfully Savory Dessert Offerings

The perfect flaky croissant to accompany a cup of house-brewed artisan coffee? A moist blueberry-filled muffin? How about an intriguing-to-the-eye rainbow of fresh berries atop one of the Larchmont Bungalow’s sweet sensations with a tender graham cracker crust? Or maybe you’d prefer a few of the meticulously decorated and colorful savory cookies available…it’s all up to you. And it’s all available at Larchmont Bungalow.

Flaky Croissants, Berry-Topped Temptations & House-Baked Colorful Cookies

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Larchmont Bungalow. We look forward to returning for breakfast, dinner and some nightly fireside entertainment very soon!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: The feel of Larchmont Bungalow is that of walking into the front door of a friend’s home…that of welcome invitation. The spacious interior allows for seating in multiple areas, while dining outdoors is another option not to be missed. Warm tones of color fill the entire establishment, while the aromas of freshly ground coffee and artisan baked goods carry themselves through the air tempting and luring patrons inside.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Fresh fare is creative, enticing and sensationally delicious. Don’t be surprised if you return to the register to even take something home with you after your dining experience! Beverages are made with care and worth ordering more.
  • LOCATION: Larchmont bungalow is located on the inviting stretch of Larchmont Village at 107 North Larchmont Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA 90094.

THE OLDE PINK HOUSE… “A Cherished Southern Savannah Favorite!”

Located next door to the Planters Inn on Reynolds Square in the Historic District of charming Savannah GA stands a culinary establishment of pure grace and refinement…The Olde Pink House. As one of Savannah’s most favored restaurants featuring upscale southern cuisine served up by the trained hands of Executive Chef Vincent Burns, The Olde Pink House carries with it a storied past worth mentioning. Rumored to be inhabited by spirits (and not just the ones behind the bar!), we were informed that this classic former home is also known for being the city’s only 18th Century mansion. The colonial-style structure was built in 1771 for Revolutionary War hero James Habersham, Jr. Most notably, he was one of the city’s most powerful early cotton commission merchants who eventually earned the rank of ‘Major’ in the war.

The building was named for the pink hue of its exterior color. We were informed by our server that in years past, the red brick that adorned the home kept bleeding through when it was painted white. After some time and several frustrating and repeated attempts to keep the pink color out of the picture, it was eventually embraced and remained the light pink mansion seen today. Inside, vintage furnishings, paintings and original fireplaces transport you from the present to an era of years gone by. Downstairs, Planters Tavern wraps you in its warm ambiance with comfortable leather seating, romantic lighting from a massive fireplace, and a little jazz being played at the nearby baby grand piano. The Arches bar is available across from the outdoor patio ready to serve up refreshing cocktails to meet your every request, while dining is available in both locations in addition to the main restaurant serving areas.

Chef Burns’ well-regarded reputation is repeatedly proven in his dishes as he excellently prepares his succulent cuisine in memorable and photo-worthy presentation style. Above, we were greeted by our server with glasses of iced water and house made cheesy bread sticks. As we peered out the nearby window toward Reynolds Square from our table, our orders of a rum and Coke and a chilled glass of Chardonnay were brought immediately to our satisfaction.

‘BLT’ Fried Green Tomato & Sweet Apple Wood Smoked Bacon With Black Pepper Thyme Buttermilk

We started our leisurely lunch with the ‘BLT” Fried Green Tomato starter. We enjoyed the combination of flavors between the fried green tomato, apple wood smoked bacon, crisp greens and a savory buttermilk sauce drizzle.

My husband selected a fish sandwich from the menu and after tasting it myself, I have to admit that this was one of the very BEST grilled fish sandwiches I’ve ever had. Light, flaky and a delicate texture, the fish was perfectly grilled and still displayed all the flavor and juiciness one would expect. Coupled with a pile of fried onion strings, tomato, fresh lettuce and all of the accoutrements a fish sandwich can insist upon on the side, this was an excellent choice.

Fish Of The Day Sandwich With Crispy Onion Strings

I simply could not pass up the Pan Seared Jumbo Lump Crab Cake entree. Served with a dignified presentation of sweet potato fries and dressed with a mouthwatering salsa verde, I realized that I had indeed chosen the perfect dish to suit my appetite.

Pan Seared Jumbo Lump Crab Cake & Fried Green Tomatoes With a House Made Salsa Verde

The Olde Pink House is certainly a destination my husband and I will return to again. Not only for the historic aspects and mysterious hauntings that ocurr, but also for the way the staff made us feel when we were there. The traditional southern fare was superb, while the ambiance reminds you of being back in the days long past when this building was once a private home. Definitely worth visiting. Just be prepared to fall in love with its classic ambiance, upscale charm, and elegant atmosphere!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: A multiplex of noteworthy entertainment, fine southern cuisine, historic culture (and the staff even has a few stories about ghost sightings to boot! ) Era-appropriate furnishings in the main dining areas with a lovely outdoor patio and piano lounge downstairs.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Exceptional! A definite “must-do” when in this stunning charming neighborhood.
  • LOCATION: The Olde Pink House is located at Reynolds Square next door to Planters Inn at 23 Abercorn Street in Savannah, GA 31401.
  • HOURS: Sundays and Mondays, The Old Pink House restaurant is available for dining from 5 PM to 10:30 PM for dinner. Tuesday through Thursday, the venue is open from 11 AM – 10:30 PM, then from 11 AM – 11 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: The staff made us feel as thought we were guests of the former owners during days of yesterday when they would entertain. Not a thing was forgotten, and their southern hospitality was incredibly memorable for us.
  • PRICE / VALUE: We felt happy with what we paid for the value of the food, service and ambiance we were presented with while dining at The Olde Pink House.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $20 per 750ml bottle
  • PARKING: Metered parking is available along Abercorn Street and also along nearby streets around Reynolds Square.

BABALU BAKERY & RESTAURANT… “A Montana Avenue Locals’ Favorite!”

We stopped for lunch at a corner restaurant in Santa Monica called Babalu. Our first impression was a good one. The establishment’s exterior motif displayed a Caribbean appeal with a Cuban flair. Bamboo and wooden blinds enhance the island feel, while inside the ambiance is continued. If you close your eyes for a moment once seated, you might almost believe that you aren’t on the mainland anymore…but on a tropical island with the wind blowing past you and bongo drums on hand to match the rhythm of the island atmosphere around you…

Bamboo ceilings, ceiling fans, tropical hues and an upbeat and eclectic decor inside the restaurant keep the carefree feeling flowing, while a friendly and courteous waitstaff attends to your requests.

On our last visit to Babalu, we weren’t quite sure what to select from their extensive array of available options. It all sounded so delicious. The interior was relaxing, the seats were comfortable, and the cuisine being served around us to other patrons appeared colorful and smelled amazing.

After perusing the menu for longer than we probably should have, we decided on a couple of entrees for lunch…

Turkey Burger

My husband selected the Turkey Burger, which was a blend of lightly spiced ground white turkey and bell pepper topped with fresh slices of avocado, grilled zucchini and fried leeks on a sesame Kaiser roll and slaw on the side. A choice of fries or a salad accompanied that, and it was all for just $11. This was a tender, expertly prepared and juicy turkey burger. One of the best we’ve tasted in a while. The sesame Kaiser roll used as a bun was soft and tasty and the slaw was crunchy and sweet with crisp, hot fries alongside.

Babalu Tacos With Roasted Vegetables

I chose the Babalu Tacos to enjoy. This dish comes with two soft shell flour tortillas stuffed with fresh avocado, Pico De Gallo, cheddar and jalapeno jack cheeses and crunchy lettuce and Napa cabbage. Black beans and a sensational pineapple-coconut rice is served on the side. I decided on the roasted vegetables to accompany my tacos for $11, however, you can instead add tender sliced chicken for $12, fish (Mahi Mahi) for $14 or grilled shrimp for $15.

Both choices were savory, enjoyable and we both agreed that we would order them again and recommend them to others. A terrific spot along charming Montana Avenue among an array of shops and eateries. Sometimes it can get confusing knowing where to go. Most times, it’s a good idea to eat where the locals do. Babalu falls into that category, because this is certainly a locals favorite!

Oh, and don’t forget that Babalu was selected as one of AOL’s ‘Top Ten of the City’s Best Desserts’! So don’t be shy to try a slice of one of the sumptuous sweet temptations before you leave. Or just order an entire creation to take home or give as a much-appreciated gift!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Fun Caribbean and Cuban feel with an island ambiance!
  • FOOD / DRINK: Fresh vegetables, ambrosial cuisine options and refreshing presentations.
  • LOCATION: Babalu is located at 1002 Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, CA 90403.
  • HOURS: Open for breakfast from 8 AM – 11:30 AM Saturdays and Sundays, brunch from 11:30 AM – 5 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, lunch from 11 AM – 5 M Monday through Fridays then for dinner 5 PM – 10 PM on Sundays through Thursdays and again from 5 PM – 11 PM for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, there are many options of times during the day in which you can enjoy Babalu’s fine offerings. (Closing hours sometimes vary, so just call ahead is you’re planning a late bite!)
  • SERVICE / STAFF: We encountered friendly efficient service and witnessed the same being offered to customers around us.
  • PRICE / VALUE: $11 for each of our entrees at lunch? For the quality of the food provided and the casual, yet Caribbean ambiance, we were not at all disappointed.
  • CORKAGE FEE:$15 per 750ml bottle.
  • PARKING: Metered street parking is available along Montana Avenue as well as nearby side streets.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our final bill came in just over $30 for a couple of drinks, the Turkey burger and the Babalu Tacos with roasted vegetables.

In the mood for a little Bocce? Why not try out the bocce ball courts at this establishment. Yes! Bocce ball at a fantastic Savannnah eatery! Additionally, free Wi-Fi is available, and the restaurant is also pet friendly, which we truly appreciate. Diners can also enjoy the al fresco ambiance on an outdoor deck large enough to seat sixty people that is heated during the cooler months. Large parties are welcome, and the restaurant welcomes special event gatherings by reservation. Catering availability also exists for all of your special occasions.

Recently awarded ‘Best Italian Restaurant’ and ‘Best Chef’ for 2012 by Connect Savannah, Leoci’s Trattoria has also pulled in other such acclamations such as being honored with the ”Best Chef’ winner again in 2011, as well as having numerous fine articles written about the establishment and the fine cuisine being served up to local and visiting patrons. You can view those on on the restaurant’s web site by clicking on the ‘In The Press’ menu option.

Leoci’s Trattoria also offers an extensive wine list, hence their non-allowance of outside bottles into the restaurant. From perfectly chilled whites to richly endowed reds to special ports and even brews and Sangrias, there is something you will enjoy no matter what your taste may be.

Chef Leoci admits to his desire to create a “world cuisine experience”. And that he most certainly executes in a meticulous and solid manner. Below are two lunch selections my husband and I chose from the appealing menu on our last trip to Leoci’s Trattoria…

House Made Bread Of The Day

To begin our dining experience, Chef Leoci sent out a basket of his house made bread of the day with a mouthwatering dish of rich extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar for our dipping pleasure. There’s something that happens to a delicious piece of freshly baked sourdough bread when it’s dredged through a fine conglomeration such as this. Taste buds suddenly cheer as if they have been awaiting that moment for a lifetime and happiness ensues because of it…

Tuscan Grilled Chicken Panini

My husband’s selection for lunch was the Tuscan Grilled Chicken Panini ($9). Grilled Chicken Breast, Romaine Lettuce and House Caesar Dressing atop grilled house made bread that definitely left an impression on my husband. I especially loved the simplistic decoration of this dish. Not too over the top, yet simple and elegant enough to impress. The tender grilled chicken inside mixed with the crunchy lettuce and savory dressing was delightful as well…

Pan Seared Roasted Squab on a Bed of Arugula Salad

I decided on the special of this particular day, which to my satisfaction was a pan seared roasted squab highlighted by an arugula salad ($13). Nearly a work of art visually, when I tasted the tenderness of the squab with its delicate seasoning, I knew I had ordered the perfect item. A couple of glasses of Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay affirmed that we had most definitely gone to the right place for our afternoon meal.

Dont forget to visit Leoci’s Trattoria’s web site for aditional information, menus and wine list offerings as well as Chef Leoci’s popular Vidalia Onion Relish, Raspberry Jalapeno Jam, Sweet Baby Beets and namesake coffee…all available to order from the comfort of your own computer!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Trendy Italian motif with a warm and welcoming feel both indoor and on the expansive spacious outdoor deck.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Perfection and intrigue come to mind here. We don’t think anyone could possibly go wrong dining at Leoci’s Trattoria.
  • LOCATION: Leoci’s Trattoria is located at 606 Abercorn Avenue Street in Savannah, GA 31401.
  • HOURS: Hours of operation extend daily Monday through Sunday from Noon to close.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: We experienced pleasant service by our waitress who engaged us in conversation and informed us about the establishment.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Suitable prices allow for a terrific value at Leoci’s Trattoria.
  • CORKAGE: No outside alcohol is allowed due to the restaurant’s extensive wine list.
  • PARKING: Private parking is available for customers behind the establishment.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our final bill for the Tuscan Grilled Chicken Panini, the Pan Seared Roasted Squab and two glassed of Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay brought our total to just under $50 for everything (including tax).

LA FRITE CAFE… “Sister Locations Serving Up Exquisite French Cuisine!”

If you know about La Frite Restaurant in California, then you know about great French cuisine at a reasonable premium in a comfortable relaxed atmosphere. With two locations in separate cities within the San Fernando Valley, these establishments are serving up some pretty spectacular French fare and at the same time providing pretty spectacular service as well. I was so excited to finally write this article. It took a little while to get this written and posted because I wanted to include the Woodland Hills La Frite Cafe in addition to the Sherman Oaks locale to show just how great they both are. I’m happy that I am finally publishing this now.

In Sherman Oaks, customers are silently greeted by a cutout of a smiling swine suited in a tuxedo holding a menu wearing a black cap exhibiting the name of the restaurant on the front. Outdoor covered patio seating is also available at this location in addition to indoor dining. The vibrant yellow and black La Frite sign is also situated atop the eatery and displays a chef flipping French crepes out of a skillet…

La Frite Cafe’s sister property, located in Woodland Hills, CA prominently shows off the same classic yellow and black colors on its canopy welcoming patrons to dine inside. Below, indoor seating in the front dining room, tables in the lounge area in the back of the restaurant and a view of the comfortable booth lining a wall across from the bar…

Cocktails at both locations will leave a satisfied smile on your face. Below are a few of the cocktails we’ve enjoyed on numerous occasions…

Above, a Lemon Drop Martini, the potent Cantaloupe Martini and a couple of classic La Frite Cafe Bloody Marys we enjoyed at the Sherman Oaks property were creative, cold and spirited. Below, at the Woodland Hills location, we indulged in the Blueberries Wild Martini (top left photo below). Stoli Blueberry, Three Olives Cake Vodka with a graham cracker rim and fresh wild blueberries…it was as thought someone had liquefied a blueberry muffin and served it to me in a martini glass…with a kick, of course! You simply MUST try this martini if you enjoy the flavor of blueberries. Additionally, we sampled a couple of tastings of the Coconut Dream Martini (top right photo below), which was incredibly sinful with Smirnoff Coconut and White Chocolate Godiva. Are you kidding! My husband and I appreciated the flavor of the islands in those as well. On another visit, we were highly pleased with the Apeachy Cosmopolitan, a Cantaloupe Martini and a straight Blueberry Martini (lower photos below), which were equally savory…

Now that we’ve covered a few of the liquid assets of each La Frite Cafe, let’s get down to the business of fine French cuisine. At the Sherman Oaks location, we have happily devoured such items so tasty and incredibly fresh that we could have sworn we were whisked away to a little cafe somewhere in France. Take a look below at the numerous offerings we thoroughly enjoyed…

Baked Brie with Provencal Herbs Served with Garlic Bread and Marinara Sauce

Above, the Baked Brie with Provencal Herbs (served with garlic bread and marinara sauce for $17.50) was baked to exquisiteness. Coated with Provencal herbs and deliciously creamy and melty when cut into, this starter was a truly divine beginning to any French meal. Another highly enjoyable appetizer we recommend is the below Mousse De Canard, which is a homemade duck liver mousse with sherry gelee, cornichons, cherry mustard and a sliced toasted baguette…

Mousse De Canard

Epinarde Et Artichaut Crepe

La Frite Cafe is known for their extraordinary crepes. So I had to try at least one. I chose the Epinarde Et Artichaut, which is their crepe filled with spinach, artichokes, cream cheese, Parmesan cheese and herbs. Can I admit that I was momentarily transported to a small cafe in Paris…a table for two outdoors as the light of the day was fading into evening…a full bright moon rising overhead and the loving gaze of my husband focused on me and where we were together alone as we seemed to be closing the eatery down being the last patrons there….

…oh, sorry…did I do that again? That’s definitely a sign that the cuisine at La Frite Cafe is significant, I suppose. When a mere taste of something you’re eating does that to you, there MUST be something to it.

Spinach Salad Et Pould

Here’s one scrumptious salad…the Spinach Salad Et Pould ($12), which is comprised of tender grilled chicken breast, chilled fresh avocado, baby red and yellow tomatoes, roasted crunchy croutons, shaved red onions and a Champagne vinaigrette that you will fall in love with at first bite. Healthy and guilt-free, this salad is a perfect selection for a hearty meal that won’t leave you feeling overstuffed. I have it frequently and always enjoy it.

The bread offering at La Frite Cafe is exceptional. If you really want true French Bread, this is the place to get it. The soft, tender excellently-baked dough just screams to be eaten. I didn’t even add butter to it. It’s just that good!

We took advantage of the Woodland Hills La Frite Cafe Happy Hour one afternoon. The menu above shows what terrific deals were presented to us. We also appreciated the long-stemmed roses in tubular glass vases on the tables weighted by clear and blue floral marbles. So simplistic, yet such a statement!

Happy Hour Caprese Salad

We started with the Caprese Salad ($6). Chilled creamy buffalo mozzarella and fresh sliced tomatoes drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette then topped with shredded basil and served with crostinis.

Did things get a bit out of hand with the next item we ordered? Perhaps. But if there was a specific item we enjoyed on this particular visit that just wowed our taste buds and heightened our senses with flavor and excitement (and lots of butter), it was the Escargot Stuffed Mushrooms ($5) below. We got a little nuts and after the mushrooms were devoured, we started dipping pieces of hot French bread into the buttery colorful sauce! It was so incredible, I think we temporarily lost our minds (in a good way!)…

Happy Hour Escargot-Stuffed Mushrooms

Happy Hour Ground Top Sirloin Sliders

Craving a little heavy cream sauce on your burger? Try the above Chateaubriand beefy bites, and I guarantee you’ll think you’ve escaped this world and gone to heaven. The Ground Top Sirloin Sliders ($7), are prepared with garlic, mushrooms, and slivers of crisp bacon. This pair of tasty beef sliders gets two thumbs up from SavorHour.com!

On another trip to the Woodland Hills La Frite Cafe, we experienced more French cuisine happiness…

Chopped Smoked Chicken Salad

The Chopped Smoked Chicken Salad ($13) is refreshing and nearly enough for two people. I couldn’t finish it myself, even after giving a portion of it to my husband to eat. There’s a lot of food in this menu option. Freshly-chopped smoked breast of chicken is gently tossed with lettuce, fresh tomatoes, chilled ripe avocado, red onion, feta cheese and pine nuts in a house vinaigrette dressing. I actually took about a third of this salad home with me because it was such a generous portion for lunchtime.

Big Boy Blue Sandwich

The Big Boy Blue is another famous menu item at La Frite Cafe ($13.50 at the Woodland Hills location.) A large handmade lean ground sirloin burger smothered in melted blue cheese served open-faced on French bread accompanied by shoestring French fries. My husband ordered this. He has always enjoyed this sandwich in the past, and this time was no exception to that record. How can anyone not like anything covered in melted blue cheese, right? But add that to La Frite Cafe’s outstanding burgers and their phenomenal French bread, and you just cannot go wrong.

Whether for Happy Hour over creative savory chilled martinis and tastes of France off of the small bites menu, or for a full meal at Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner, there is definitely something for everyone at either one of the La Frite Cafe locations in the San Fernando Valley. We certainly will continue to sing the praises of the flavors of France every time we visit.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Both establishments are noticeable for their black-and-yellow striped canopies and quaint cozy exterior look. Inside, they each welcome diners in with a classic traditional French motif and comfortable seating which includes booths, individual tables as well as bar seating.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Spectacular authentic French cuisine available at both locations that you will not soon forget. A fantastic restaurant for revisiting time and time again for entertaining family and friends or business associates, taking some time for yourself to relax and enjoy amazingly-prepared authentic French cuisine and cold refreshing cocktails. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Ask your server about those when you stop in.
  • HOURS: Sunday – Breakfast and lunch is available daily from 11AM to 4PM, while dinner is served every evening from 4PM to 10PM during the week and from 4PM to 11PM Friday and Saturday nights. You can also enjoy a great champagne brunch Saturdays and Sundays from 11AM to 4PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: We’ve never had a bad experience at either of these restaurants. We’ve been to both on several occasions at different times of the day, and the customer service and dedication shown has never appeared compromised in any way.
  • PRICE / VALUE: No problems with prices at La Frite Cafe. The prices will satisfy you just as much as their fine French cuisine.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $7 per 750ml bottle at both locations.
  • CONTACT INFO: Woodland Hills Location – Phone: (818) 225-1331, Sherman Oaks Location – Phone: (818) 990-1791. The website for both locations is www.lafritecafe.com
  • PARKING: The Sherman Oaks location offers patrons complimentary parking next to the building, while there is Valet Parking available at the Woodland Hills restaurant. Metered street parking is also available in front of both locations alternatively.
  • TOTAL BILL: We have spent varied amounts at both locations of La Frite Cafe. I think the most we’ve ever paid was close to $200 for a party of four after a business meeting. On most occasions, my husband and I never could total more than $35 for two entrees and a few cocktails for the two of us in a single sitting. We’re very satisfied with the resulting prices for such terrific and rewarding cuisine.

HOMINY GRILL… “Deep-Fried Cheese Grits & Award-Winning Southern Cuisine!”

Along Rutledge Avenue in Charleston, South Carolina there is a popular eatery called Hominy Grill that caters to those who have a love for incredible southern cuisine. What is hominy, you may be asking? Some say it’s the same thing as grits, but the true definition is “a food made from kernels of corn which are soaked in an alkali solution of either lime or lye. The corrosive nature of the solution removes the hull and germ of the corn and causes the grain itself to puff up to about twice its normal size.” If hominy is ground coarsely, you’ve created grits. With that said, my husband and I ventured to the quaint part of the city where the restaurant is situated to do some research of our own.

Having realized the national acclaim this establishment has attracted and taking note of the fact that owner and Chef, Robert Stehling, received the James Beard Award for Best Southern Chef in 2008, my husband and I were both curious. Additionally, the restaurant has been featured in magazines such as Gourmet, Food + Wine, Esquire and also has been mentioned in the New York Times on numerous occasions. Time for research. And something to eat since we were getting a bit famished after a very late night and early morning of business meetings in the area.

Hominy Grill packs patrons in, and by this, we realized something must be amazing here as we found ourselves waiting nearly an hour just to get a booth for the two of us. First good sign…lots of customers! We didn’t mind the delayed calming of our hunger because that gave us a chance to observe everything and listen to the comments of other diners as they left the restaurant. Nothing terrible was brought to our attention by anyone leaving. One patron was mentioning something about her biscuits being cold when they were served, but also that she appreciated how quickly the server replaced them. We were excited to finally approach the head of the line and were ready to be seated next…

A nice starting touch was the container of boiled peanuts delivered by a friendly staff member. Despite the calorie and fat content in these large boiled tidbits, I am personally a lover of boiled peanuts! I couldn’t believe how big they were in fact. A pleasant way to start our meal…

We ordered a refreshing sweet Mimosa and a glass of chilled Chardonnay to start while we perused the menus placed in front of us. The Mimosa was served in a tall glass complimented with an orange wedge garnish, while the Chardonnay was cold and perfect on a warm day.

We wanted to do thorough research, so we each ordered two different entrees to try. We do this sometimes, and just take the leftovers (which there always are with four entrees and only two people) home with us for a late-night snack or breakfast the next morning if we’re not researching a breakfast spot the next day. We often get some strange looks from nearby patrons that seem to be wondering if we’re really going to eat all the food placed before us. It’s a funny thing, and my husband and I really get a kick our of that.

Marinated Skirt Steak Topped With Arugula and a Side of Cheese Grits

Above, one of the daily specials presented by our waitress…the Marinated Skirt Steak topped with fresh arugula and a side of cheese grits that I had the option of adding sounded healthy and packed with lean protein, yet still combined a bit of cheese grit naughtiness. I elected that combination and we were not disappointed by the tenderness of the steak, the freshness of the fresh arugula piled on top with a succulent savory dressing and the side of hot cheesiness of the grits that was simply cooked to perfection.

Sesame Crusted Farm-Raised Catfish with Sauteed Okra, Deep-Fried Cheese Grits and Geechee Peanut Sauce

To balance out the restrained ordering of the lean steak and arugula above, I also chose the Sesame Crusted Catfish. But wait…that just got better with the sauteed okra, and get this…DEEP-FRIED CHEESE GRITS, and unique-all-to-its-own Geechee peanut sauce (a creole peanut sauce), which tied every fascinating flavor of this dish together into some kind of southern cuisine heaven. Enlightenment was an understatement as to the way we felt after tasting this preparation. And I especially loved the display of this creation…just bursting with vibrant color between the bright green sauteed sliced okra, the deep cayenne hue of the peanut sauce and the lighter additions of yellowish shades from the grits and the sesame seeds that coated the catfish.

Brisket and Slaw Sandwich Special with a Side of Cheese Grits

My husband selected the above Special…the brisket inside this inventive inception was so tender. The delicious slaw it was combined with really was a nice combination in flavor as well as temperature contrast as the cool slaw mixed with the hot brisket and together combined to form a sensational savory experience. Of course, we ordered additional shredded cheese for the side of cheese grits…on TOP of it all!

Below, we also indulged in the classic Fried Catfish Sandwich…I wanted to try Hominy Grill’s traditional version of the fried catfish sandwich aside from the scrumptious plated catfish dish that I ordered above. I was glad I did, because despite them both being catfish dishes, they were so different in preparation style and flavor, we would have missed the opportunity to experience the adversity before us. The Fried Catfish Sandwich was exceptional as well, however. Adding a few sinfully savory fries with this plate of happiness enhanced the fun!

Fried Catfish Sandwich

Okay…so here’s something you really MUST try after your next meal at Hominy Grill. The Hominy Grill Chocolate Pudding. Pure decadence, complete transformation to a very happy place and a deep rich chocolate sensation that will not go forgotten…ever…for the remainder of your days…as in this has to be the best chocolate pudding I have ever enjoyed!

Hominy Grill’s Chocolate Pudding

Did we enjoy what we found at Hominy Grill? In a word, yes. Would we return again despite the lengthy wait to be seated? Quite simply, yes we would. For the quality and presentation of the cuisine, attentive waitstaff far exceeding our expectations and the quaint locale of this Charleston hot spot, we will most definitely visit again.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: This place is fun! The decor is colorful, the waitstaff is happy and spunky and the atmosphere is charming.
  • FOOD / DRINK: True southern excellence here. If you’re not looking for southern cooking, then you’re in the wrong place. But if you’re curious, or if you’re a lover of all cuisine of the south, then you’ll definitely have a memorable experience.
  • LOCATION: Hominy Grill is located at 207 Rutledge Avenue in Charleston, SC 29403.
  • HOURS: The establishment is open for business Monday through Friday for breakfast between 7:30 AM and 11:30 AM, then for lunch/dinner between 11:30 AM and 9 PM. On Saturdays, brunch is available from 9 AM to 9 PM, with dinner Specials available from 3 PM – 9 PM. Sundays are reserved for brunch only from 9 AM until 3 PM. Reservations are reserved for dinner only, so be prepared to deal with a ‘first-come-first-serve’ seating procedure any other time. But take our word for it…we’d do it again in a heartbeat.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: We were treated kindly by a friendly waitress, and from our observation of others being served in the restaurant, it seemed to be the unanimous vote among other diners.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Not too bad for what is delivered. Between the quick service, friendly and accommodating staff, stunning cuisine displays and the national notoriety of the entire place, we didn’t feel as though the pricing was too off track.
  • CORKAGE FEE: A mere $10 per 750ml bottle.
  • PARKING: There is ample parking in a lot near the restaurant. Metered street parking is also available.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our total bill came in just a bit over $65 (including tax).

McCORMICK & SCHMICK’S SEAFOOD & STEAKS… “Keep the Bread On Your Side of the Table!”

After dropping some friends off at LAX, my husband suggested having a late lunch at McCormick & Schmick’s in El Segundo. Frequenting the restaurant often for business, my husband thought it would be a nice spot close by for lunch together since we were in the neighborhood.

Specializing in seafood and shellfish, aged-to-perfection steaks and garden fresh salads, McCormick & Schmick’s also offers a constantly-changing menu. Each of the more than eighty restaurants print their menu daily! It’s true! We think that is so terrific. This is done to ensure that only the highest and best quality items available are served to dining patrons.

In addition to that, the El Segundo McCormick & Schmick’s presents a very inviting and warm ambiance as you walk through the establishment. Below, you can see the wood and glass paneled walls in the main dining room inside, the lounge area boasting an enormous bar with knowledgeable bartenders, the main entrance where an oyster display on ice is enhanced by a nearby swordfish mounted on a stainless steel covered wall and the dazzling glass ceiling hallway that leads past nicely-appointed banquet rooms on the way to the outdoor dining patio…

Having lunch on a beautiful day in southern California is not a hard thing to do considering how magnificent the weather is here. However, having lunch on a beautiful day on a beautiful outdoor patio can be tricky if you’re not sure where to do it. A sure bet is at the El Segundo McCormick & Schmick’s…

Above, I snapped this photo from where we were seated. We were lucky enough to arrive for lunch between the lunch and dinner crowds, so we had our pick of tables. This beautiful wooden arbor with wire-fashioned light spheres hanging from it was one of our views.

To our right, the view above encompassed comfortable patio furniture in front of a marvelous outdoor fireplace, plasma screen televisions for sports season gatherings and high-reaching palm trees overlooking the patio as they kept a watchful eye on us while we dined.

These creatively-fashioned wire spheres are actually lights hanging from the slatted ceilings of the trellised patio. I can only imagine the inviting environment these must create after the sun goes down. If any of our readers know where we can get some of these for our own patio, please let us know!

Time for chilled refreshments before ordering! My husband enjoyed a glass of Champagne, while I sipped from a cold glass of Chardonnay…

Above, the outdoor fireplace I mentioned earlier on the patio…enormous and commanding, this is the main centerpiece of the dining space out of doors. We will have to return for dinner to experience the evening ambiance!

Lunch is started with an amazing sourdough bread served with a ramekin of chilled sweet cream butter. This is the sort of carbohydrate I could feast on for days…therefore, I forced my husband to keep it on his side of the table so that I could resist temptation. I did tear off a small bite just to taste, and was delivered to another place entirely. A good place. A place of carbohydrate and butter happiness…even if just for a moment until that bite was devoured and was nothing more than a memory. Bottom line…the bread at McCormick & Schmick’s is gratifying and tasty!

Walnut Mixed Greens Salad

I started with a small salad before our entrees were delivered. This would make a terrific entree salad as well. This Walnut Mixed Greens Salad ($7.95) is prepared with mixed greens, candied walnuts, blue cheese crumbles and a savory balsamic vinaigrette dressing that covers every last morsel on your plate. The blue cheese is creamy and is a perfect flavor contrast to the sweet candied walnuts, while the creamy vinaigrette that coats the mixed greens really delivers.

For our main courses, we both chose one of McCormick & Schmick’s well-known items…their fish! Below, my husband decided upon the Parmesan Crusted Sole with a Lemon Caper Butter Sauce and butternut squash orzo ($15.95).

Parmesan Crusted Sole

Both of our fish entrees were served with the below butternut squash orzo…green peas, tender orzo, succulent butternut squash and accompanied by carrots and asparagus on the side…

Butternut Squash Orzo

My choice for lunch was also a fish selection…the Almond Crusted Rainbow Trout with a Lemon Butter Sauce and the same butternut squash orzo pictured above.

Almond Crusted Rainbow Trout

Another delicious salad creation from the kitchen of McCormick & Schmick’s is the Lobster Cobb Salad, which as you can see below, is quite visually stimulating with its tower of layers of crumbled bacon, egg, blue cheese, lettuce, tomato, and succulent lobster claw meat…

Lobster Cobb Salad

In the photo below, I started to break down the tower of goodness to show all of the colorful and savory layers of delicious ingredients…

Lobster Cobb Salad

Craving something on the sweeter side after your meal, but want to keep it light? Try the Sorbet Martini ($4.95), which is a choice of three of the restaurant’s featured sorbet flavors of the day. We chose the raspberry, lime and pear…

…and a closer look…

Sorbet Martini

We’re planning to return to McCormick & Schmick’s for their Happy Hour. We hear it’s a pretty fantastic event and should be well worth reviewing in a future post. Until then, if you’re searching for an upscale yet relaxed atmosphere for lunch with acceptable prices near the airport, this is most certainly one of our high recommendations!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Inside, a traditional steakhouse feel with dark wooded and glass paneled walls, long intimate hallways, inviting banquet rooms for private parties and an entire lounge dedicated to the room-length bar ready to serve most anything you can think of. Outside, a beautifully-appointed arbor-covered outdoor patio complete with a massive fireplace, plasma televisions and swaying palms.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Fresh seafood, perfectly-cooked orzo (not too soft or chewy), chilled refreshing cocktails, nicely baked warm bread served before each meal and savory creative salads that are very enjoyable.
  • LOCATION: McCormick & Schmick’s is located near LAX at 2101 Rosecrans Avenue in El Segundo, CA 90245.
  • HOURS: Monday through Saturday from 11AM – 11:30PM, then on Sundays from 11AM – 10:30PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Our server, Ryan, was incredible! He must really love his job at this establishment, because he was exemplary at it. Courteous, checking on us frequently without being overbearing, allowing us time to decide what we wanted and just as nice as could be. We’ll make a mental note to request his section again next time we’re there!
  • PRICE / VALUE: For just under $60, we feel we received a great offering. Of course, that amount would have been much less had we not ordered wine and champagne, but we were very happy that we did due to the quality of the beverages served.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $10 per bottle
  • PARKING: Valet service is provided at the restaurant’s main entrance, however, the establishment will validate your ticket if you elect to keep your vehicle in the parking garage right next door as well.
  • TOTAL BILL: Our compilation of items ordered, including Chardonnay, Champagne, a Walnut Mixed Greens salad, the Almond Crusted Rainbow Trout entree and the Parmesan Crusted Sole entree came to a total of $58.57. Though very close to our $50 (including tax) goal, we’re happy to admit that this experience was most certainly worth the splurge!

MERITAGE RESTAURANT @ CALLOWAY VINEYARD & WINERY… “Wine Tasting & Lunch Overlooking the Vineyards!”

Nestled within the Callaway Vineyards in Temecula, California sits Meritage. The name being derived from the blend of assorted Bordeaux grapes found mostly in the United States, Meritage offers the freshest seasonal cuisine with an emphasis on “small plate” fare, creative sandwiches and artfully-crafted entrees. Chef Mike Henry graces the area with his ingenious culinary talent, adding a Mediterranean touch to everything he prepares. Once you step inside the front door, you’ll feel welcomed by the amicable staff and the open air patio-like ambiance.

Meritage overlooks the rolling vineyards of the Callaway winery. Stunning vibrant greens and colorful flowers are just part of the striking view from the restaurant. Recently named one of the “Hot 100 Restaurants in the Inland Empire”, this casual restaurant with its varied menu is one to be sure to visit when in Temecula’s wine country.

On a wine tasting day trip, we chose Meritage for a late lunch location. To our overwhelming satisfaction, Chef Henry’s sumptuous creations attested to his culinary expertise. For the quality and quantity of food we were served, the bottom line in terms of price was surprisingly conservative.

Above, crusty warm bread ($2.50 per basket) was served with a creamy spread and a savory dipping olive oil. This was perfect after a bit of wine tasting.

Roasted 1 / 2 Chicken

The Roasted 1 / 2 Chicken ($17.50) with Citrus, Tarragon, Garlic, Roasted Carrots, Radishes and Baby Potatoes (above) was succulent, flavorful and a generous portion for one. My husband and I shared the chicken selection and the following lunch entree because they were so amply portioned.

Short Rib ‘Sloppy Joe’ Sandwich

Above and below, the Smoked Short Rib “Sloppy Joe” on Grilled Sourdough ($17.50) was an eye-catching display. A Cabernet BBQ sauce enhances the tender and full-flavored short rib making this large sized menu option a definite winner, while perfectly-cooked steak fries and a colorful refreshing cabbage slaw bring variations of color to the dish.

Short Rib ‘Sloppy Joe” Sandwich

Meritage also offers live music from various artists at select times of the day. Take a look at the schedule of musical performances for the restaurant at their website below for more information. We had quite an experience. Beautiful expansive views from every table, an outdoor feel while dining on the enclosed terrace, friendly knowledgeable staff and superior cuisine presented in enlarged portions with imaginative presentation. A sure win-win culinary involvement!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Breathtaking scenery over the rolling hills of Calloway’s vineyards, casual, yet upscale setting and such a relaxed welcoming atmosphere.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Excellent preparation and creative display of dishes, hearty menu selections with a Mediterranean twist and portions large enough that my husband and I both had leftovers to take home with us!
  • LOCATION: Meritage is located on the Calloway Vineyards & Winery grounds at 32720 Rancho California Road in Temecula, CA 92589
  • HOURS: The restaurant is open for Lunch daily from 11AM – 4PM, and for Dinner Friday through Sunday from 5PM – 9PM.

  • TOTAL BILL: After enjoying several wine tastings in the area, we indulged in a bread basket, the Roasted 1/2 Chicken and the Smoked Short Rib “Sloppy Joe” sandwich for a total of $40.41 (including tax).

WREN BISTRO, BAR & MARKET… “A Charming Place For Lunch!”

A short distance from the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park along the Beaufort River in downtown Beaufort, South Carolina sits Wren Bistro. A restaurant, wine bar and market, this trendy upscale eatery will satisfy anyone who steps foot inside.

The exterior of the corner bistro is in a word…charming. Just as it’s host town of Beaufort is. The simple white building facade highlighted by tall palm trees and creative signs just welcomes you inside. Located on popular Carteret and Port Republic Street, this location is easy to find, worth the drive if you live in surrounding areas and will leave you speechless with their superior tact, professional and friendly service and impressive appetizing offerings and general setting.

No detail was left out when Wren Bistro’s owners thought about a design concept for their new establishment. Above, the elongated comforting full bar, a retail area of the restaurant offering wines and other gourmet goodies, Wren Bistro’s signature logo, dining room window ledges lined with decorative candles, a huge wooden adirondack-style chair and a few of the tables in front of the bar. Certainly very eclectic, well thought-out items of decorative interest, and most definitely all are terrific conversation pieces!

We started out lunch by being seated near a large window that offered a view of the busy town street and the rustling palm trees right outside. Menus and iced water were then given to us as we started to peruse our meal options.

Above, the Mango Iced Tea is a “must-order”. If you enjoy southern sweet tea, this mango-flavored refreshing beverage is mandatory to enjoy. We also enjoyed the Tablatine Martini made with vodka, lemongrass-infused pineapple juice, fresh squeezed lemon juice and fresh pineapple. The epitome of a perfect cocktail!

Lobster & Shellfish Bisque

The Lobster and Shellfish Bisque was scrumptious! Made with jumbo lump crab meat in a shrimp and lobster sherry-laced bisque. Superior taste, mouthwatering and an incredible starter to any meal at Wren Bistro.

Okay, this is my favorite lunch item at Wren bistro. If you love a really good gyro sandwich, this is the place for that. I can’t remember how many times I’ve ordered this gyro sandwich for lunch. At least eight or nine times in the last year. Really. This sandwich is THAT good. Wren Bistro’s Greek Wrap includes mildly-spiced lean lamb, tangy feta cheese, an out-of-this-world tzatziki sauce, fresh lettuce and tomato and onion all carefully wrapped in a soft pita. Definitely an enjoyable experience!

Greek Wrap

Another favorite of ours is the Southwest Salad below. This expertly-prepared vibrant dish consists of grilled chicken, roasted corn and peppers, black beans, avocado, tortilla strips and cheddar and monterey cheeses.

JOE’S RESTAURANT… “Culinary Excellence With a Neighborhood Feel!”

Known for it’s beaches and popular boardwalk, being an abode for the creative and artistically-inclined, its elongated entertainment-furnished Promenade and slower-paced neighborhood feel, Venice, CA is also host to another notable attraction…Joe’s Restaurant. For more than 20 years, Joe’s has been catering to the gastronomic cravings of patrons and leaving in its wake only satisfied customers forming lines to return. Our most recent visit to this eatery proved to be a delight of the senses, a culinary experience worth noting and an excellent choice for a late lunch.

Opened in1991, Executive Chef and owner, Joseph Miller sought out his love of all things culinary by opening Joe’s Restaurant along Abbot Kinney Boulevard in an eclectic section of Venice, California. Since that memorable occasion, Chef Miller has been serving up unmistakable offerings that serve as a favorite gathering spot among locals.

Below, the restaurant’s staff hard at work in the kitchen, the covered tranquil patio, the view of Joe’s from outside, indoor dining, a walk along the sidewalk beside the eatery and the view of the hallway leading from the patio back to the front entry.

Upon being seated at a cozy table for two on the patio on a perfectly beautiful California day, our server brought a vessel of iced water to our table, menus and a variety of breads with butter and an olive tapenade. Relaxing sounds of water flowing from the stone wall fountain built into a patio wall amplifies the al fresco dining experience. The fresh crusty bread that is served while perusing the menu is hearty and delightful.

I especially loved this warm weather chiller…the Watermelon Agua Fresca! Fresh-squeezed watermelon juice, simple syrup, a splash of soda and lime juice just waiting to be enjoyed. Such a refreshing beverage to enjoy on a warm day...

Watermelon Agua Fresca

The Chef’s Tasting was a small biscuit accompanied by a square of pork belly with a peach mustard, which complimented the flavors nicely.

Chef’s Tasting…Pork Belly With Peach Mustard and a Biscuit

Joe’s offers a sensational three-course lunch extension. For just $19, you can choose a starter, entree and dessert! We’re not kidding! We both did this, and were extremely satisfied with what we were presented for under $20.

Here’s what we ordered…

For my starter, I chose the Carrot Ginger Soup with Creme Fraiche and Cilantro. The essence of ginger was unique and mildly spicy throughout without being too overwhelming, while the soothing carrot puree rounded the dish off perfectly…

Carrot Ginger Soup

My husband chose the Albacore Crudo for his beginning flavor experience. Enhanced with Creme Fraiche, Japanese cucumber, breakfast radish, watermelon and toasted sesame, a quick taste of this appetizer convinced me that visual artistry wasn’t it’s only highlight…

Albacore Crudo

For his entree, my husband selected the California Sand Dabs. Avocado, cherry tomatoes, Maine sweet shrimp and delicate Sand Dabs in a delicious chive nage. (Nage is a French word for a flavored liquid used for poaching delicate foods-typically seafood. An example of a traditional nage is a broth flavored with white wine, vegetables and herbs in which seafood is poached. The liquid is then reduced and thickened with cream and butter.)

California Sand Dabs

Below is a close-up of the Sand Dab dish. It was so beautiful and colorful, I just couldn’t resist…

My entree choice was the Duck Confit Tagliatelle. Super thin ribbons of Tagliatelle pasta, topped with multi-colored baby carrots, poached leeks, grilled onions and a savory duck jus. This dish was scrumptious and filling and I was happy to have ordered it.

Duck Confit Tagliatelle

For our dessert selections, my husband opted for the Chocolate Crunch Cake below. Joined by a hazelnut praline, coffee ice cream and flavorful candied hazelnuts, this sweet temptation was crunchy, delectable and good enough to cure even the most discriminative chocolate cravings.

Chocolate Crunch Cake

I selected the Pavlova. Fresh macerated berries, meringue, mascarpone cream atop delicately crumbled cookies. So picturesque!

Joe’s has the deal on lunch in Venice! Nowhere else that we have found has this much variety and quality for under $20 for three courses. Take a look at their menu online and see what we mean. And the next time you’re in the Venice area, be sure to stop in at Joe’s. Whether it’s for their three-course lunches, their prix-fixed dinners, or just to indulge in a cold creative concoction at the cozy intimate bar, you’ll be glad you visited!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Upscale, yet has a casual feel. Cozy, yet possesses a spacious ambiance. Gets busy, yet we never felt as thought we were forgotten at any point during our visit.
  • FOOD / DRINK: Refreshing Watermelon Agua Fresca coolers, a choice selection of wines and cocktails and eye-catching culinary presentations worthy of being placed in national food magazines. The menu items are full of flavor and creatively engineered.
  • LOCATION: Joe’s is located at 1023 Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, CA 91411.
  • HOURS: Joe’s is available for lunch Tuesday through Friday from Noon – 2:30 PM, dinner on Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday from 6 PM – 10 PM, then on Friday and Saturday from 6 PM – 11 PM, brunch Saturdays and Sundays from 11A to 2:30 PM. Joe’s is closed on Mondays.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Marguerite was our server, and was professional, suggested favorites on the menu and gracious. All other staff we interacted with were friendly and very assisting as well.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Happy, happy, happy. Where else can you find such value for two lunches with such variety at these prices?
  • CORKAGE FEE: $25 per bottle.
  • PARKING: $2 with restaurant validation located in the lot behind the restaurant.

MARSHSIDE MAMA’S WATERFRONT CAFE… “Rustic Dining On the River!”

Have you ever traveled to your dining destination via a relaxing cruise with friends on a pontoon boat? Also known as ‘party boats’, these leisure vehicles are very popular in the south and allow for hours of fun under the sun with friends and family or cruising along just before sunset to take in the evening’s palate of colors. We recently accompanied friends on a ritual ride to Daufuskie (pronounced ‘duh-fuss-key’) Island in South Carolina ourselves and enjoyed a local eatery called Marshside Mama’s!

Part of the charm of Marshside Mama’s is just getting there. Accessible only by water if you don’t live on the island, our group left from one of the Hilton Head Island marinas and crossed the Calibogue Sound anticipating the traditional southern fare served here. Daufuskie Island is an undeveloped residential sea island located between Savannah, GA and Hilton Head Island, SC that still maintains its natural charm. Roughly eight square miles of southern tranquility, the island offers a lighthouse built in 1873, rare tabby ruins, historic graveyards and many more unique sites one can visit while here. Daufuskie Island happily welcomes visitors and tourists alike to tour the island.

I snapped several photos of the view on our serene boat ride from one island to the next. I really enjoyed the untouched attributes this island has to offer. Also serving as inspiration to local artists and writers alike, Daufuskie Island gained national recognition as the setting of Pat Conroy’s novel The Water Is Wide in 1972. Additionally, the island was named a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places due to its Gullah and Civil War history.

Once we docked our watercraft, we walked along the dock and arrived at Marshside Mama’s. Massive moss-strewn oaks hovered overhead and the view of the surrounding marsh was just stunning from our table. We met a few visitors and chatted with several locals we knew as well. After our party enjoyed a few refreshing cocktails, we were ready to dine at this casual boater-friendly locale.

The menu at Marshside Mama’s is simple. There are no frills here. But then again, there don’t have to be. The enchantment and fascination of the environment is enough extravagance for anyone. The above poster board sized sign is given to the table and passed around for diners to choose their selections. This menu changes daily, and offered us many items from Shrimp and Grits to fresh Carolina seafood choices to BBQ Baby Back Ribs.

How huge is this salad! This was great. Comprised of crisp lettuces, locally-grown tomatoes, yellow bell peppers, sliced carrots and a delectable vinaigrette, this basin of happiness was devoured in no time as we waited for our remaining orders to arrive…

Marshside Mama’s House Salad

The Spinach and Artichoke Dip was sensational. Creamy and lighter-tasting than other traditional dips of the same name, I literally could have eaten an entire bowl of this myself…

Spinach & Artichoke Dip

Behold…the BEST gumbo I ever remember having in my entire life! Having lived in the South for most of my life, that’s saying a lot.  I’m not sure what went into this dish besides tender loving care, but whatever it was I would like the recipe please! Seriously.

Seafood Gumbo

When in the South, Shrimp and Grits are a popular favorite. There are several variations to this southern delight. This version above was by far one of my favorite preparations that I’ve had in a long time, however…

Marshside Mama’s Shrimp & Grits

The Grilled Mahi Mahi & Shrimp plate was another alternative. Cooked to perfection, this moderately-flavored flaky fish was enhanced with fresh jumbo shrimp, a side of white rice, a lemon wedge and garnished with a sprinkling of green onions…

Grilled Mahi Mahi & Shrimp

Goodbye, Daufuskie Island! Above, the wake behind our boat as we headed back to the Hilton Head Island marina as I watched Daufuskie island slowly disappear in the distance. Below, the evening’s approach as the sun began to set.

We really enjoyed our visit to Marshside Mama’s. It was nice to let our hair down, settle back and to not have to be concerned about just being ourselves with good friends, great food and the sound of the tide washing against the banks of Daufuskie Island.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: The beachy decor will force you to relax and remember that you came here to do just that! Don’t expect white tablecloths and a sommelier’s wine suggestions because you won’t find that here. What you will find is a local boater’s abode with a friendly essence and an overpowering sense of island life. Plastic chairs and tablecloths at the tables, hovering southern oaks overhead, a couple of canines from local residents roaming around and a full bar attached to the main building all combine to equal one thing…fun! Don’t let the relaxed casual ambiance discourage you, because you would only be missing out a great and memorable experience!
  • FOOD / DRINK:  Marshside Mama’s offers a full bar and a southern-style menu with local favorites and traditional choices. You just can’t go wrong with anything on the menu here.
  • LOCATION: Marshside Mama’s is only accessible by water for non-residents, and is located at 15 Haig Point Road on Daufuskie Island, SC 29915.
  • HOURS: Don’t forget to call for reservations at this island eatery. Despite what you may think about it’s casual ambiance and laid-back feel, the restaurant does book up for lunch and dinner quickly due to it’s popularity. Closed on Mondays, Marshside Mama’s is open for lunch Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 3 PM and on Sundays from noon to 5 PM. Dinner is served Wednesdays through Saturdays from 6 PM to 10 PM.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Efficient, friendly and they seem to enjoy what they’re doing.
  • PRICE / VALUE: Price concerns are not an option here. We were very satisfied with what we paid for what we received.
  • CORKAGE FEE: $15 per bottle.
  • CONTACT INFO: Phone: (843) 785 – 4755, Website: www.marshsidemamas.com. (Don’t forget to call ahead for reservations, to see what’s on the menu board and to check if there are any private parties going on before you visit.)
  • PARKING: Just pull your watercraft up to the dock outside of Marshside Mama’s, tie up and forget about everything!
  • TOTAL BILL: Our total bill came in just over $70 (including tax) for three main entrees, the Spinach and Artichoke Dip, a large salad for the table and a few drinks. Not bad at all!

LOCANDA DEL LAGO RISTORANTE ITALIANO… “Great Spot For Lunch in Santa Monica!”

Along the busy corridor of the Third Street Promenade and Arizona Avenue in Santa Monica, there is Locanda del Lago. A welcoming and inviting lunch location that is enjoyed by many. On a recent trip to this venue, some friends and I enjoyed some light fare here during a day of shopping and visiting…

The fresh baked crunchy bread served here is wonderful. Presented with a bit of olive oil, it’s a terrific beginning to a delightful meal…

We began with two orders of the Tartara Di Tonno…the Ahi Tuna Tartar made with Lone Ranch Farms avocado, red onion, a creamy balsamic dressing and kept company by a few plantain chips, which were mildly sweet in flavor…

Tartara Di Tonno

All but one of us ordered salads. I chose the Insalata Di Pollo Con Funghi. This is a salad of market greens, sliced chicken breast and a warm mushroom dressing. I wanted to change things up a bit, so I had the chicken replaced by Tiger Shrimp for $5 more and asked that the Parmesan Pizza Bread that normally comes with this dish to not be added. The result was a perfectly light shrimp salad with no carbs mixed with a sumptuous flavorsome dressing…

Insalata Di Pollo Con Funghi (With Tiger Shrimp In Place of the Chicken)

Below, one of my friends selected the Insalata Rucola e Parmigiano. Fresh Arugula, market cherry tomatoes, Parmesan cheese and a creamy lemon dressing…

Insalata Rucola e Parmigiano

An additional salad creation chosen at our table was the original Insalata Di Pollo Con Funghi, which included market greens, sliced chicken breast and a warm mushroom dressing topped by chunks of avocado coupled with a few slices of Locanda del Lago’s Parmesan Pizza Bread.

Insalata Di Pollo Con Funghi

Finally, the last order from our table was for the Spaghetti Verdi, which was served with large shrimp and a warm mushroom sauce. Of course, it was topped with a mountain of freshly-grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese!

Spaghetti Verdi

Even the bill was presented to us in its own wooden boat…so creative!

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: A fun festive environment with available patio dining options in front of the establishment. Our party sat outside and had a wonderful experience!
  • FOOD / DRINK: Healthy refreshing salads, hearty homemade pasta, sensational Ahi tuna tartar and a sensational wine list.

BLU JAM CAFE… “Jam On With Succulent Cuisine In A Relaxed Atmosphere!”

It’s not often that a place known for it’s sensational breakfast dishes and lunch sandwiches and salads can pull off delicious dinner entrees in addition to their morning and noon fare, but Blu Jam Cafe on Melrose Avenue has definitely nailed it! This cafe boasts scrumptious cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere that welcomes its customers in with open arms. We had to return to this location again recently to try other items on their extensive and multifarious menu…and were we impressed! (Unfortunately, Blu Jam Cafe is no longer serving dinner. However, breakfast and lunch are now available all day, seven days a week, from 8 AM – 5 PM!)

With attractive and comfortable seating indoors and outside in a quaint railing-enclosed patio perfect for people-watching, Blu Jam Cafe offers an array of items on their all-day menu. Now open from 8AM to 5PM, you can not only order your favorite breakfast items, but also anything on the lunch or dinner menus as well. Sauteed Salmon with String Beans and Mashed potatoes at 8 AM, anyone? What an ingenious idea!

The interior colors are warm, vibrant and there is a sense of energetic whimsy about this place. You will feel welcome the moment you walk inside this establishment. In fact, you may never want to leave. The dark glazed mahogany tables coordinate nicely with the brick wall behind the bar, the raw finish of the exposed pipes and rafters overhead lend itself to a bit of a rustic feel and the amazing customer service and delightfully sensational menu options tie everything together to top off a neighborhood eatery with so much to offer…

California Omelet

My husband and I first visited Blu Jam Cafe for lunch a few weeks ago. Our selections included the above California Omelet, which is comprised of a three egg omelet with crispy smoked bacon, fresh tomato, avocado, sour cream and cheddar cheese served with potatoes and toast. All I witnessed was a very happy man across from me at the table as I watched this dish get devoured down to the very last bite.

Below, I appreciated the Warm Mushroom Salad with sauteed fresh mushrooms, organic mixed greens, chopped tomatoes, goat cheese, chives and a delicious balsamic vinaigrette dressing. I not only delighted in the union of savory flavors while feasting upon this item, but I was also enchanted by the visual presentation as well…

Warm Mushroom Salad

On our most recent trek to Blu Jam Cafe, we elected to sit indoors. The mood of the evening was a bit more calm and the busy breakfast crowd had long since simmered down. We began this dining experience by trying one of the Red Wine Sangrias made with fresh juices, cinnamon and sparkling wine…

Red Sangria

…both a little tart from the wine and a little sweetened by the fruit juices and fresh orange wedge affixed to the side of the glass, this was a very refreshing take on a classic summer drink…

Burrata & Strawberries

This choice from the Soups & Starters section of the menu (pictured above and below) is Blu Jam Cafe’s Burrata and Strawberries appetizer… succulent fresh strawberries topped with creamy Burrata (means “buttered” in Italian. Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream…the outer shell is solid mozzarella, while the inside consists of mozzarella and cream) then topped again by wild arugula and a balsamic syrup on top of crunchy crostinis. The below picture is a close-up of this delectable dish…

Burrata & Strawberries Close-Up

For my entree, I went simple with a panini. Served on pressed focaccia bread with a side of organic mixed greens, the Turkey Pesto Panini was bursting with astonishing flavors from the combination of the oven-roasted turkey breast, refreshing tomatoes, house-made pesto and provolone cheese…

Turkey Pesto Panini

The following photo is a close-up view of the sandwich…

Close-Up Photo of the Turkey Pesto Panini

My husband ordered the Sauteed Salmon. And yes, it did taste as incredible as it looks in this snapshot below! This grilled salmon dish was served with green beans, mashed potatoes and a lemon-caper sauce that was to die for…literally!

Sauteed Salmon

Stepping out of our normal routine a bit, we decided to order dessert. Yes, we know it’s a strange occurance for us, but for one reason or another we were both craving a little bite of something sweet. Problem was, we wound up eating the entire thing! We chose a piece of the Tres Leches Cake topped with a fluffy whipped topping and fresh seasonal berries. In a word, it was heaven…and very beautiful to behold.

Tres Leches Cake

We love this place! And here’s something else to love…Blu Jam Cafe serves organic produce, free-range meats and some of the freshest seafood you can get your hands on. Additionally, kudos to this terrific eatery for their support of the local economy by its purchase of meats from farms local to the area like Jacob Farms, Rodoni Farm, Riverdog Farm, Terra Firma Farm and Niman Ranch. What’s not to love about that? In fact, what’s not to love about Blu Jam Cafe…..quite simply, not a thing!

CAFE 4750 @ RITZ-CARLTON AMELIA ISLAND… “Beach Elegance on Amelia Island!”

Cafe 4750 is located at the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island Resort in Florida. When people think of Florida, they tend to conjure up images of blue water, sandy beaches, warm gulf winds and relaxation.  Well, you’ll receive all of those things plus so much more at this location. And if you’re ever in the area, you should definitely try out Cafe 4750.

We had a meeting to attend while we were there, but decided to grab a quick bite before leaving for that. We wound up at this casual beach restaurant at the resort. Below is a photo of our view from the table where we were seated.

Palm trees abound here everywhere you look. Sprawling manicured grass lawns stretch throughout the property and no detail is left unnoticed…

It was the perfect afternoon for a perfect refreshing cocktail, and the Cafe 4750 bar concocted these lovely beverages for us.  A Rum and Coke on the left, and my choice, their Cafe 4750 Lemonade…

We enjoyed their fresh Caesar Salad with olives, biscuit croutons and white anchovies…

Caesar Salad With Olives, Biscuit Croutons and White Anchovies

Since we were watching the time, we decided to just share the Grilled Salmon Sandwich. It was scrumptious with its arugula, roasted red peppers, tomatoes and spicy Aiolo on a honey wheat bun. Served with crispy savory fries on the side, this was a terrific quick and satisfying lunch on the go…

Grilled Salmon Sandwich With Fries

Just steps from Cafe 4750 is the beautiful shore, white sand dunes and a beach that stretches as far as the eye can see…

After our meeting, we returned to Cafe 4750 before turning in for the night and enjoyed dessert! The 4750 Chocolate Cake and the Lemon Curd Tart with a house-made honey meringue…

HOFER DER STADTWIRT GERMAN RESTAURANT… “A Great Place To Lunch In Munich!”

In Munich, Germany, there sits a classic eatery popular with the locals for lingering lunches and great spirits. We stopped here for a quick lunch en route to meet some friends in the town on this particular day. The weather was beautiful and it was a terrific day to just take in the amazing climate and sights as well…

I loved this life-sized cartoonist’s rendition of a European waiter standing along the sidelines of Hofer House’s open courtyard where we elected to dine. I had to take a picture of it…

Complete with wrought iron detailed arched doorways and lantern wall sconces, this European pub-style cafe was just what we were looking for before heading out to our next destination…

Below, we indulged in some of the typical German fare. I chose the smoked salmon plate with crunchy light potato pancakes, caviar-topped boiled eggs and a sinful dipping sauce on the side with a glass of white wine. My husband decided on the Caprese Salad with fresh-picked basil and a delightful savory balsamic vinaigrette. Both were amazing, fresh-flavored and just what we needed before our drive across town…

This outdoor courtyard below is where we dined for lunch. You can see the empty table behind the gentleman in the light blue dress shirt with the red tie and the beer in front of him…that’s where we were seated.

Such a relaxed and flavorsome experience with friendly servers and pleasant surroundings. We enjoyed this visit to Hofer House, and hope to return again soon on a future-planned trip to Munich.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: Beautiful ambiance and a welcoming feel invited us into this simple courtyard eatery filled with a neighborhood vibe and calming energy.
  • FOOD / DRINK: The wines we enjoyed with lunch were refreshing and the fare was equally impressive and enjoyable
  • LOCATION: Hofer House is located at Hofer. The host city of Burg Strasse 5, 80331 Munich.
  • HOURS: The establishment is open for dining Monday through Saturday from 10 AM, except Sundays and holidays.
  • SERVICE / STAFF: Friendly and efficient service was projected during our visit.
  • PRICE / VALUE: We were happy with the fair price for the value of the food we enjoyed.
  • CORKAGE: Hofer House did not allow any outside alcohol into their establishment when we visited.
  • PARKING: The best method we found of getting to this terrific dining spot is simply to walk. Located in the heart of the downtown bustling energetic city of Munich, there is so much to take in, and doing so via foot appeared to be the most enjoyable.
  • TOTAL BILL: In American dollars, our total bill did not exceed $40, which for having two main dished and accompanying wines, we were delighted.

THE COTTAGE CAFE, BAKERY & TEA ROOM… “Southern Cuisine Among The Oak Trees!”

The South is home to many traditions. Hospitality reigns king, shrimp and grits are a staple, and beauty resides in Spanish moss strewn oak trees, soothing gentle waves washing onto sandy shores and local Jazz and Zydeco music. On our many visits to the commonly called “Lowcountry” of South Carolina, the quaint town of Bluffton is home to a terrific southern cafe, bakery and tea room we frequent often when there. It’s called The Cottage…

With its quaint location on popular Calhoun Street, The Cottage is tucked under the Spanish moss bearded oak trees of the charming town. With a wrap-around porch and wind chimes that play harmoniously in the gentle breeze off the May River, there is no doubt why this location is such a local’s favorite…

Above, you can see the dedication and creativity that went into every last detail at The Cottage. From the metal dragonfly that hangs on a porch wall beside the front door to the colorful and artistic signs to the babbling modern fountain standing in the front yard beside wrought iron park benches, you will feel a sense of warmth and welcome the moment you step foot onto the property.

Above, there is no item left out at The Cottage… suttle-sounding wind chimes that play a melodic tune as you dine on the wrap around porch, a bird feeder hanging cleverly from a tree in the front yard beside a cafe table and the massive healthy ferns pouring over the edges of their hanging planters all around the outdoor dining area are just part of the detailed mastery provided by the owners to create the perfect southern getaway…

A crisp glass of Chardonnay (upper left), southern sweet tea (much sweeter than iced tea on the west coast) and The Cottage menus (lower right)…

A quaint neighborhood view from the sidewalk, Spanish moss-draped Oaks and a view of the porch seating above offer a relaxed feel most anywhere one occupies at The Cottage…

At lunch, instead of bread, crackers are served with a tasty pimento cheese in a small white ramekin and fresh cut raw carrots above.

Maine Lobster Pot Pie

The Summer In Maine Lobster Pot Pie above is scrumptious with its peas, carrots, corn, mushrooms, leeks, scallions and hearty chunks of lobster meat topped with a flaky filo pastry and finished with a sour cream drizzle…

Grilled Shrimp Cobb Salad

Another favorite we’ve enjoyed at The Cottage is the Grilled Shrimp Cobb. Savory, delicious and enhanced with mixed greens tossed with a creamy buttermilk blue cheese dressing, crisp bacon, egg, tomato, avocado, and balsamic vinaigrette topped with perfectly-grilled large shrimp…

Flounder Almondine

The Flounder Almondine, (top), is luscious with a nice buttery crunch. Panko-crusted, pan-seared and finished with sliced almonds, lemon, butter, white wine, and parsley makes this selection a local favorite!

Curried Chicken Salad Wrap

Above, the Curried Chicken Salad Wrap includes cashews, raisins, lettuce and chutney all wrapped up in an easy-to-eat thin flour tortilla and served with vegetable chips.

Shrimp and Grits

The Cottage prepares a beautiful version of traditional shrimp and grits. But this rendition is anything but traditional…it’s amazing! Above, the creamy cheddar stone ground grits are topped with a heaping mound of fresh local shrimp sauteed with bacon, onion, garlic, mushrooms and scallions and complimented with a delightful cornbread muffin.

Fish Tacos

The Fish Tacos encased in soft taco shells are loaded with tender chunks of local fish and accompanied by a salsa-filled avocado half.

Maine Lobster Avocado Roll

The Maine Lobster Avocado Roll is delectable with sizable chunks of Maine lobster that are marinated with celery, herbs and lemon on a garlic buttered New England frank bun with fresh avocado and a lobster au jus and served with potato salad and pickles.

The historic neighborhood that The Cottage is nestled within is cozy and quaint and filled with antique shops, art galleries, upscale boutiques, and endless other fun and exciting opportunities. Recipient of the 2010 and 2011 Reader’s Choice Award by Hilton Head Monthly and Best of Bluffton in the Bluffton Today, The Cottage is the original Carson Cottage now surrounded by four other more recently built cottages collectively called the Carson Cottages. The original Carson Cottage’s history dates back to 1868 when Confederate soldier J.J. Carson built the structure as his residence. In 1902, he formed the first Baptist Church of Bluffton in the home’s front room, which was later restored by Thomas Viljac in 2007.

  • ESTABLISHMENT / DECOR: You realize you have arrived in the south when you see how you are treated at The Cottage. With the staff’s kind and friendly reputation and delightful front porch setting, you’ll be making a mental note to return to this quaint establishment!
  • FOOD / DRINK: Fresh ingredients, refreshing beverages, traditional southern sweet tea with mint (and a great raspberry iced tea, also), and an all-around terrific charming ambiance on the wrap-around front porch perfectly suited for relaxed lunching and calming dinners beneath the cover of massive oaks.
